Monster Hunter Portable 3rd sells 3 million

PSP game passes another milestone in Japan, becomes fastest-selling game in Capcom's history.

Less than two weeks after it sold 2 million copies , Monster Hunter Portable 3rd has passed another milestone. Today, Capcom announced the PSP title has sold over 3 million units in just 17 days in the island nation. The sales rate makes the game not just the fastest-selling PSP game in the publisher's history, but also its overall fastest-selling title to date.

Monster Hunter Portable 3rd is now Capcom's fastest-selling game of all time.

Capcom attributed the game's popularity to a series of trans-media promotions. These include a television anime, a variety of spin-off products, and several mobile phone tie-ins. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd's success also boosted overall sales of the Monster Hunter franchise, which now total 16 million units.

A sequel to Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (known as Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G in Japan), Monster Hunter Portable 3rd offers new hunting areas and monstrous prey. It also sports a new Feylene system and lets players customize their companions' equipment loadouts when embarking on hunts. The game sports the same ad hoc co-op mode that has made the series so popular in Japan.

Monster Hunter Portable 3rd has no US release date as of yet. For a closer look at the game, check out its trailer from this year's Tokyo Game Show, viewable below.

Wait. Go back. Television anime. What television anime? Even google doesn't know anything about any MH anime.

And there's one new hunting ground. Not plural. All the rest were in Tri, although they've had their underwater sections removed.

Is there really no one working for this site that actually plays Monster Hunter and thus knows what's going on with it? Boo, Gamespot. Boo.

Fantastic game though. I am one of those 3 million.

I just figured out the key to making money. Trip out of LSD...design a hand held game..doesn't matter what it's about...let's say a cybernetic pencil with a huge mouth that tries to collect lots of pillows disguised as zombies...lol geez, I'm suddenly thinking Nagasaki and Hiroshima is a side effect and symptom we're seeing today

Capcom has no excuse not to make a PS3 version of Monster Hunter. They made Lost Planet 2 which was not as popular as Monster Hunter. They could make it for the Japanese population that has been supporting their series since day one. And all of Sony USA/Europe/Japan etc is the biggest fools for not trying to make it happen. They fear that taking Monster Hunter form psp would kill the system. PSP system sales will always be high if you play Monster Hunter due to the fact that you will need a new system every 2 yrs because you wear out the controls on your psp from playing too much. Capcom has a gold mine with the Monster Hunter series and they keep talking to the wrong people on how to market it in the west. I'm a 1st Generation Gamer and i have never in the history of gaming seen such bad management to a gaming series that's successful and unsuccessful at the same time. Monster Hunter Tri was a waste of money. The Game is good but they messed up the one main thing that make a Monster Hunter game.. Weapons and Armor. 4 weapon and not enough of them to make. Capcom needs to fire the dummy making these lame decisions.

@admund: I disagree. Of course, neither game will be as good as MH, I don't think they'll do badly either. The monster hunting genre is a popular one, so even though they won't compare with the titan, they'll still do well. God Eater is a lot of fun, it's similar to MH, but different enough that I didn't feel like I was playing a remake. If Square-Enix makes LoA fun, interesting, and unique, it'll be great.

Love me some Monster Hunter for PSP or the Wii...great action/rpg with constant and fair challenges, amazing co-op, TONS of content and gametime, and a great sense of pure accomplishment when you achieve some great feats in the game. Would love for them to port this to NA, and like many have said, I'd love to see Monster Hunter in amazing HD glory...and if they make it 3D compatible, well...that's the icing, my friends.

Impressive, doing significantly better than the lacking Wii effort did it seems. Seems for every cry of 'PSP is finished' I read, there's a story like this not far off.

That's pretty damn impressive. I really enjoyed Freedom Unite on my PSP, but I still hope this spur in sales will convince Capcom to pick up on their canceled project for the PS3.

I have the Wii Monster Hunter Tri, but I haven't played it yet. I have played the Monster Hunter Freedom games on the PSP. They are very good. I haven't found anyone else to play with however. It's funny watching all the players running away from the Monsters. They must be very power. I wonder how many people can fighter each monster together as a group? I'm going to have to get online and find out some day.

They need to make a Monster Hunter for the PS3! I would play that non-stop.
