Monolith, WBIE bring home F.E.A.R.

Original creators of paranormal shooter regain rights to franchise's name in wake of Activision Blizzard fire sale; F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin dated for February 10.

The fallout has been substantial for the many gaming licenses that once fell under the wing of Vivendi Games and its subsidiary, Sierra Entertainment. Following the gaming group's merger with Santa Monica-based publishing powerhouse Activision in July, a number of licenses and studios were placed under the magnifying glass.

As an outcome of that scrutiny, Massive Entertainment (World in Conflict) and Swordfish Studios (50 Cent: Blood on the Sand) were dubbed "nonstrategic business units," while properties such as Brutal Legend, Ghostbusters, and Bourne were dropped from the publisher's lineup.

While happy resolutions to the many in-limbo properties have been few and far between, one grinning party is Monolith Entertainment. The Warner Bros. Interactive-owned studio said today that it has reacquired the rights to make games under the name F.E.A.R., a franchise it created for publisher Vivendi in 2005.

With the rights to the name secured, Monolith also said that Project Origin will be a spiritual successor no more. The game has been rebranded F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, retaining as a subtitle the moniker selected by fans of the paranormal shooter last September.

F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin is now expected to ship for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on February 10. For more on the game, which picks up where the 2005 original left off, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

That's great news i always take time explaining to my friends that this is F.E.A.R 2.This will make it a lot easier.

this is great news, now I don't have to explain how "Project Origin" is actually "FEAR2" BTW, I really like the line in the trailer : "Fear Alma, again..."

Either way I was going to get this but I am happy for Monolith. This has got to be a great moral boost for some of the best devs in the industry.

That's awesome news. Now Monolith plz bring back NOLF series!!!

It's cool that the devs decided to keep the name "Project Origin" in the game's title, even if it is just sub-title. Considering how the community went to the trouble of naming the game in a contest. :)

@majorm, you're so right. Loads of gamers don't read the gamepress or look on the kind of sites we do. Many don't even bother having/can't get/afford an internet connection either so how are they gonna know what Project Origin is? I think Monolith are doing the best thing they can under the odd circumstances by keeping the fan chosen name in as the subtitle while sticking the actual name of the franchise on is a no-brainer when it comes to sales. Lets just hope the game keeps F.E.A.R's oppressive atmosphere while giving us better, more varied gameplay and environments-that's the only thing that really matters. It's nice that they now own something that they created, mind, it's only right.

Interesting although they always had the right to the content of the game so having the original name again doesn't really change much about the game itself.

would have bought it either way cause i knew it would be the sequel anyways but having F.E.A.R. in the title makes it more of a bonus to me

i liked the name project origin, but i guess this will grab more sales

You guys brushing this off as no big deal know nothing about "branding." It's a huge deal. There are probably fans of F.E.A.R. out there that had no clue that this game was the sequel. Many don't pay that much attention. Just having the F.E.A.R. name back on it will add greatly to sales. If it made no difference, Monolith wouldn't have bothered even trying to get the name back. And they certainly wouldn't have immediately stuck it on the game once they did. It may even have had something to do with the delay. They may have known they were going to get the name back and wanted to wait unti they did.

I'm Glad they regained the name. The very name itself, F.E.A.R. contains it's own connotations. Everyone know it goes to a great thriller Shooter. By regaining the name it carries with it the expectations of F.E.A.R. and the thrill it will be to play it

Who cares what the name is. The game hasn't changed in any way. Although it is kinda cool to have the F.E.A.R acronym back!

very cool, I wasn't liking the Project Origin name too much. I was still going to play it no matter what though, just so I could get goosebumps from running into Alma again, but having the FEAR name back is a good thing.

HELL YES! I never liked the name "Project Origin", honestly. I always forgot that it was the second FEAR game. This is great news! FEAR2 FTW! :D

Great news re:F.E.A.R. (exactly as glez13 says) Still not so good re: Brutal Legend - Tim Schaffer and 80s metal - how can it not be awesome?!

Gamespot should've asked about the cannon status of the expansions. Ho! and this are news great to monolith, a developer that somehow I've always thought was out of luck, they had good\great games (nolf2), but only a small monetary success. fear was their groundbreaking title but was opaqued by the name loss. good for them

This great to hear for the Fear franchise. It should have its title and not another name. The game is awesome.

Glad to hear the great news, the original Fear kicked serious ass for the pc. Nothing beats the AI in that game. A must buy for any first person shooter fans.

Its very nice to know that they have got their name back but will this continue the main the story line? Because isnt that too late to work on the story again?

Wait does this mean they wont be making the world in conflict expansion, that would definetely be a shame although I think we could all survive without the 50 cent game

Its good FEAR is going to be continued to be worked on, however it does suck that they dropped Ghostbusters from the publisher line-up. I would have liked to see that.

Good to hear, it was jerk move to just keep the name and not make any games based on it. Glad it made it back to the home team.

justice prevails - shame that the games looks like its gone too far console-alley and has been brutally dumbed down for you stick twiddlers who can't avoid being shot all the time

I loved the first F.E.A.R., and if this game gets a good rew, then I am getting this one as well:-) I was blown away by the special effekts from the first one, and the story was great! But that being said, I don't se how the name makes any difference at all! I realy dont care about the name... What matters in this game for me is the singleplayer part! And maybe if we arev lucky the multi player will be great too:-)

I think you'll see this get moved back at least a month or two.

With Kill Zone 2 coming out in February. I don't think F.E.A.R 2 will do very well on the PS3.

Danimita
Danimita

Same creators from the first game? Good, let's hope they take away all the stuff that was too action-oriented and less horror-themed, making it a good successor to the first game. This doesn't mean I don't want those really big robots. I just don't want too many of them, since it'll spoil the F.E.A.R. experience
