Monday: Surviving the End of Nations

We kick off our free-to-play week with developer Trion Worlds' real-time strategy game End of Nations. Now with bacon-flavored tanks!

In End of Nations, the end times are upon us. As the world burns, humankind's last civilizations commit themselves to nonstop warfare. You are a cog in this engine of destruction, together with hundreds like you. This massively multiplayer real-time strategy game looks like an interesting middle ground between two genres: traditional RTS and multiplayer online battle arena. There are large-scale battles, but individual players control only a small group of units (with unique abilities). Perhaps it's best if you see for yourself in the videos below.

Loved World in Conflict --- will probably like this too.. Looks a tad bit simplified compared thereto but probably for the best since its f2p.

From a stalwart RTS player this game looks very promising. But like BlueRaptor7 said, if it's Free To Play but Pay To Win I won't even play it. I'm willing to pay for content myself but I want to beat people because of skill, not because I paid for a mega unit or something.

@Diarma10 in the first video he says theres a PvE mode

@Xenrathe I couldn't agree more. Shattered Galaxy going public was one of the saddest events of my gaming life. Hopefully this game can do what SG did early on.

Reminds me a lot of Supreme Commander and Starcraft, but still looks interesting.

All this comes down to is the F2P model. If there is any pay to win, I won't touch it. To all those that say it's a necessary evil: look at League of Legends.

This looks nice, but ftp means always online, always against human opponents. I still prefer single player games.

Cash-shop games remind me very much of the 80s arcade hall games. Especially those arcade games that employed artificial countdown timers where in order to keep playing the game, you'd have to buy more time by constantly feeding it quarters... Myself, I would much prefer to spend more money up-front for a game that doesn't make use of cash-shop mechanics to enhance my gaming experience, or to give me an advantage, or in order to remove some stupid artificial limitations built into the game itself.... All those things make me feel like I got suckered. Same with some DLC these days. Don't get me wrong, I love DLC for those games that I can't live without - but c'mon, releasing DLC right after a game's initial release date is almost insulting...

Well it looks like it takes more after End War in that it focuses on military. If the MMORTS genre is your thing: consider also Age of Empires Online and Stronghold Kingdoms. However, all of these games seem to have a market for selling certain things. I wish there were a true F2P MMORTS...and not a game that claims to be F2P, in which the real "free" players just get their ***es handed to them by paying players.

Nothing is free in this world. At some point you will need to put your hard earned cash on the line.

@Maxwell What developers say and what developers+publishers actually do are often two entirely different things. Recently GW2's claims of convenience / cosmetic only have come into question after a leak of the cash-shop items. On a more basic level, I think cash-shops result in an internal conflict of interest. On one hand, developers want to make the best game possible. On the other hand, the best way to sell items in the cash-shop is to create artificial inconveniences and then sell the cure via the cash shop. In fact, I would argue this internal conflict is the reason that officially-sanctioned/developed RMAH or RM2Gold exchanges are a bad idea. I'd prefer to buy a box or pay a sub over a F2P / CS model any day.

Yea yea, free to play, but if you want to win you will likely need to spend real cash on upgrades.

Well... looks kinda promising. Not a big fan of MMOs, but I'll probably try it. The only thing f2p games are superior to the p2p is the fact that all gamers are equal; there's no such thing as "I'm better than you, because I have more cash and can buy better equipment". Actually, that's one of the two major reasons why I don't play them. That and I don't have spare cash to pay every month, be e 5, 15, 20$. However, I've heard (and jinzo9988 just confirmed it) that free games have poor to none technical support and that's a lot to think about. Than again, you get what you pay for. Thank you, mr. McGee.

@mbashour I know right! @Fundai @MW2ismygame almost all of the F2P developers I've spoken with subscribe to the philosophy that paid content should only amount to convince and/or cosmetic items, meaning items that help you gain experience faster or new skins (such as the bacon tank!)

@jinzo9988 i dont know i dont even like mmos but that blade & soul game makes me wanna build a gaming comp

All of the Korean and Chinese piece of crap free to play grinders are going to go extinct in the next 5 years. There will always be a market for the anime MMO, they can cover that, but anything other than that by a Chinese or Korean dev studio will not be able to penetrate anything the domestic market puts out in free to play. The quality, and the passion quite frankly, simply isn't there on their end. I work in the industry, I'm not an outsider looking in. I've dealt with dev studios over there and every one I've dealt with doesn't care about problems and issues with their game, they just care about the green and how they can milk the most of it out of you. There's a reason why the free to play industry has such a terrible rep. Not all is lost though, once real devs get behind the payment model these garbage rip-off soul-dead crap games will disappear.

A free-to-play World in Conflict/Company of Heroes hybrid, basically. No thanks, I already own both these games.

@MW2ismygame yep. I completely agree. Tf2 has basically created the ultimate f2p model; you don't have to buy anything other than keys, which don't affect game play, as it all comes in drops (just have to play for a long time >_> ). While they don't have to do EXACTLY that, they should take the Que from tf2 and make expensive items cosmetic, and nothing you buy should be game play changing.

MW2ismygame
MW2ismygame

ok you have my attention this looks pretty cool, just please do something TF2 like where you can only buy skins/misc items that DONT effect gameplay and im happy

I've recently been playing alot of f2p games such as Realm of the Mad God, Tf2, and Tribes Ascend. All those games prove that the f2p models works.

The only MMORTS I've ever played was Shattered Galaxy, and that game was an absolute blast. Sadly, the beta (which lasted like two years) was superior to the end result and the game was a commercial dud. Here's to hoping that End of Nations takes a few cues from SG.
