Molyneux's new God game hits Kickstarter goal

Godus from Peter Molyneux and 22Cans reaches funding target just two day before closing; musical collaboration with Harry Waters teased.

by

Peter Molyneux's new God game Godus reached its Kickstarter goal last evening, with just under two days to go. The fund presently stands at £478,857 ($779,962) pledged of an original £450,00 ($732,960) target. A total of 15,565 people have backed Godus, which will cease accepting donations tomorrow at 12:50 p.m. EDT.

Godus is a reinvention of Molyneux's classic God game Populous. It is in development at 22Cans for PC, Mac, and mobile devices, and will not require a constant Internet connection for its single-player mode. The game is due out during September 2013.

Separately, 22Cans announced that it has been contacted by a range of composers and musicians wishing to contribute to Godus. One such musician is Harry Waters, son of Pink Floyd bassist and vocalist Roger Waters. No firm collaboration plans have been nailed down yet, but 22Cans said it is exploring how it can work with Harry Waters on the soundtrack for Godus.

22Cans recently released a prototype video for Godus.

Wow, this is great news! Thanks for the article, I really look forward to seeing what the gameplay is like in the coming year and beyond now that PM is returning to the small sized dev team.

And no internet connection required for single player, friggen awesome.

Molyneux was brought into the wrong generation of gaming. He had many wonderful visions, but current technology can't support it, and thus falls on false promises.

I don't plan on buying anything he has a lead in for that reason.

Yeah um you forgot to mention how much Chris Roberts' post on Star Citizen's own Kickstarter page helped Godus getting attention.

Peter Molyneux is an interesting man, not least for the division that he inspires. I believe that he is honest, if prone to exaggeration, as such I wish him all the best with this project.

Now, if he can sell more copies of the than Fable, that'll really put Microsoft in their place! :)

Lets give a lying millionaire money because he asks you for it... brilliant!!!

Better be better than Populous, otherwise for half a million on kickstarter - pretty expensive piece of crap.

It is quite nice to hear of a game project that has reached its Kickstarter goal.

I'm glad. I played populous years ago, it was great, you couldn't find many games like it on a console at the time. It will be interesting to see it in 20 pvp! The video interview was motivational and upbeat. I hope he can deliver on the promises though.

In other news, Youtube cannot be signed into using usernames anymore, the layout has changed once again, and by tomorrow nothing will matter because we'll all be dead, back to the studio.

Molyneux just needs to stop promising anything, and be silent so we can judge for ourselves what kind of game this is on release.

He over-promises and under deliveries. Kickstarter even has that as a rule when they announced risks! It's going to be funny to watch him make this game of his now.

Will the donor names be listed on the credits as a "special thanks to" in the game?

Eddie... God should not be capitalized unless it is a proper noun, signifying the "name" of the Christian god. This Molyneux game will not have you playing as Yaweh or Jehova or whatever other names are assigned to that being. This is a "god" game, not a "God" game.

It was at 350K with only 2 or 3 days to go.  I think he must have called in some favours.  450K seems quite a lot for the game type, especially after watching the video prototype.  Anyway, he did do Populous 2, Dungeon Keeper 1 and the original Syndicate, his best for me.

wow, people will donate money to anyone. I mean, it's okay for others that need $ to ask for donations but pretty sure PM has a lot of money.

sigh, with this happening, no wonder that people will donate money even to Activision if Activision asked for donations for another COD game.

I think people are overly harsh on Molyneux. He's made populous, black and white, dungeon keeper and fable, all amazing games and yet he's talked about as if he steals peoples babies and throws them at kittens. Fair enough Fable 2 was average and 3 was dump but surely that doesn't erase an otherwise great career.

I didn't contribute for 2 reasons.

1- My kids seem to want Christmas presents.

2- $25-30 for a digital copy of the game seemed steep for a game that is coming, apparently whole, to iOS and Android.

Is Black and White really that fun?

 @PotHeel He has ambitions. He always fails to follow up on his claims, but at least he tried!

 @Gladestone1 Dungeon Keeper you say! Why then you should check out "War for the Overworld" on Kickstarter...

 @91210user He's been pretty restrictive with his words regarding this project from what I've seen. I too dislike when he boasts and lies and then only delivers a fraction of what he says.

This project seems a bit more humble though. And like cyborg100000 says. He has made some fantastic games in the past. At least he TRIES to be innovative and original. He truly wants to make awesome games.

Most of the time it turns out decently.

Whatever the result, this time, it sure beats getting yet another flashy FPS.

 @91210user Maybe it's because he's been stuck working for EA for god knows how long. His early games are amazing.

 @Hillsy_ So basically you're saying that he was smarter than the guys trying to get "Alpha Colony" funded which missed their 50.000 USD Kickstarter goal by just 28 USD. (which were obviously not that clever to pay the rest themselves)

 From a guy who game Duke Nukem Forever a 10 and Assassin's Creed a 1, I don't think many will consider that much of an insult.

 @zzamaro

 How much money does he have?

You are aware that 22Cans is a startup that he pretty much funded himself to get off the ground, are you not?

He isn't living in poverty, but he isn't Bill Gates either.

deathstream

 @Chilloutcolin

 He has long needed what he has now at 22Cans, a partner who steps in and checks him when his excitement outpaces what can be reasonably delivered.  He should never give an interview without someone there to say "As much as Peter wants us to try and include Feature X, we aren't sure if it is technically feasible."

 @lucc3x

 Black and White was better as a fun experiment than as an RTS.  I did have a lot of fun with it.  But Godus will be more like Populous.

 @shingui5 Are you kidding me? I'd love to play a game where I got to indirectly kill Jesus. But that's not this game.

 also with microsoft at the helm of lionhead the gaps between fable games got closer and closer so all those ideas he has are even less likely to make it in

 @Bangerman15  @deathstream

Huh funny because I don't ever remember rating any of those games...seriously I gave AC a 1? Geez I must have been hit with a brick that day...which would explain why i don't remember doing any of this... Oh and that really doesn't take away from how foolish it is to put any faith and money into Peter Molyneux. Nice try though ;)

 @deathstream  @Deadly_Nemesis lololol i didn't know you can see people's ratings! that's funny duke nukem a 10 LOL!! I bought the collectors of that game too.. biggest waste of 100 dollars i've ever made :(
