Mojang: Minecraft Xbox 360 breaking retail records

Creator Markus Persson says disc-based version of open-ended sandbox title the fastest-selling console game in the US.

The Minecraft phenomenon continues.

Creator Markus "Notch" Persson said on Twitter today that he has been informed that the disc-based Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition is currently the fastest-selling console game in the US.

"Neato!" he said on Twitter.

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition launched earlier this month, though Persson said he "had no idea" the game had hit store shelves.

"Haha, so apparently the physical disc version of Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition has been out in stores for several days. Had no idea," he added.

Minecraft for the Xbox 360 originally launched through Xbox Live last May, scoring a warm critical reception and selling 6 million units, generating $120 million in revenue.

Microsoft has described Minecraft as a "beast," and last week confirmed the game is coming to the Xbox One.

The PC version of Minecraft is closing in on 11 million in sales, while the Pocket Edition crossed 10 million paid downloads last month.

Time voters recently named Persson the second-most-influential person in the world, only behind Egypt's president Mohamed Morsi.

"Time voters recently named Persson the second-most-influential person in the world, only behind Egypt's president Mohamed Morsi."

LoLwut? I don't know who these voters are, but they sure have some strange views of who is influential. Utterly ridiculous.

I know so many people disagree with me...but there are so many people that prefer disc based games to the downloadable games.

I never purchased Journey or Minecraft until it was released on retail.  I just hope they keep giving us both options.  This is a testament to the fact that there are still fans of this type of release...even so long after the PC and downloadable editions have been released.

I love introducing people to minecraft. My cousin used to say minecraft was for little kids and nerds. Well, long story short, I haven't seen him in a month after he got to play minecraft at my house.

So now this means everyone is going to try and make their version if minecraft then?

Now they just need to hurry up with the next update, was scheduled for early June now their saying late July. The delay better have been to add texture pack support.

This can't actually be true.

This prove the larger part of the gaming audience don't care about graphics. They like graphics, but it's more about style and fun factor. Nintendo is right, but all they need to do now is put out some good games for the Wii.

I guess it's kind of how Hollywood thinks all action movies had to have the same kind of leading man until Bruce Willis in the original Die Hard.

So with a PS4 version being discussed, an X1 version been announced, the superior PC version still available and the download copy of Minecraft been on 360 for over a year, people still went out and bought a disc copy?

What the hell?

I got bored of it when it was still in alpha, I don't understand how people still play it.

I don't get how it's still selling, they've barely made any worthwhile content for it in years and the only thing keeping it remotely interesting is the mods, so why people buy the mobile or console version is beyond me.

The $20 price point doesn't hurt either. More publishers should launch quality retail releases for $20.

Idea of playing this on 360 just isnt right .... PC FTW !

How is it possible that there are still people that don't have this? It seems like everyone who wants it would have bought it long ago.

I never really got into it. I feel it's very overrated to be honest.. but if people are really enjoying it, who am I to complain about that?

never played it.  is it good?

what would be the top 5 aspects of the game?

Cryio

@steelmouth Once you play it for a bit and you'll understand what the game is capable of, you'll understand why it has those graphics.

Mostly because for current-gen gen graphics we would need 2025 GPUs/CPUs

@csward  Most influential would have been  caused by an internet campaign to get a write in candidate elected. I remember voting for Mick Foley the wrestler to be the TIME Person of the Year, encouraged by wrestling fan sites, over a decade ago. For a while, it was a race between Foley and a perverted Howard Stern dwarf character.

I mean, Notch might be the most influential person in gaming and Morsi might be the most influential person in Egypt, but how can anyone take Time seriously?

@Donrock12 i'm with you on this one, for small games like this, braid, and most indi games thats  a few hundred megs downloading it is fine, but if i just paid $80 for a AAA title then have to wait 4 hours to 12 FRIGGIN hours to download (i'm looking at you Uncharted 3 on PSN+ which was 30 FRIGGIN GIGS) is just plain wrong, add that to the limited hard drive space, you'll be adding and deleting games very often, and yes some would argue to buy another external, but if the games was on disc to begin with, there'd be no need to waste time downloading, no need to worry about deleting games off the hard drive and downloading it again and no need to buy another hard drive

JayQproductions
JayQproductions

@Donrock12 you prolly have another 10-15 years of physical copies to collect but after that don't be surprised if the only way to get a game is digitally. The biggest reason it's not already all digital is because internet stability, access, and speed aren't there yet.

JayQproductions
JayQproductions

@Deadly_Nemesis They already have, tons of Minecraft like games have came out lately and even AAA games like DayZ and The Last of Us have taken ideas from Minecraft.

mikedelta-09

@JustArtificial Firstly, some individuals are far from considering any next-generation purchases since we're still a little less than a half-year off from making another $400 purchase, not including the games themselves. Second, the PC and 360 version required an internet connection, and for 360 owners, an Xbox LIVE Gold account (another $60/year) to purchase. I know this may be an alien concept to some people, but there are still a great bit of gamers in the world without stable internet or none at all. The disc-version is like a god-send to them.

P.S - On a more personal note, the fact that you used the term "superior PC version" says a whole lot about your integrity as a gamer.

@agpickle They probably use a controller or a keyboard and mouse.

@SLO-gamer frankly I don't understand how people can stomach consoles or the controllers, but then again I stopped using consoles since 1995

@aovannor It only becomes fun once you determine to build something.  You plan it out in your head, lay down a foundation, then gather resources like crazy until finally you have a magnificent structure for your character to live in and base all of your future operations from.  Multiplayer with family and friends so you can show off also makes it more fun.

BassMan
BassMan

@aovannor I don't understand it myself either.  Once the hype train gets going, so many people jump on board.  It becomes the cool thing to do like Angry Birds, Apple products, etc..

@udubdawgz1- building huge ass stuff, from houses to massive castles, villages pyramids...whatever u can dream of.

2-survival is really fun on hard, cause monsters can kick ur face in, and creepers can pretty much one shot u if u have no armor on.

3-traps...yes so many traps u can make ..yess yess

4-making a home is just an amazing  feeling

5-exploration, is amazing cause the world is endless (yes its endless)

@DWalker131@Donrock12also downloading HUGE games will break the DOWNLOAD CAPS that Comca$t and other big ISPs force on us!!! I don't understand why so many people want digital downloads!!! Especially the next gen games!! The games will end up costing so much more if bought via digital download when we have to pay Comca$t for the overage!!! If people want to buy digital games go ahead, but for me, discs only.

Donrock12
Donrock12

@DWalker131 @Donrock12 Good to see a familiar gamer.  Seriously I went on a rant the other day on how silly it is to buy day one digital...only to be called an "idiot".  It is the most idiotic thing ever.  Sorry...I buy about 25 games a month (all three current gen systems plus old systems, plus the wii u, plus pre-orders...yeah it gets that bad.)  If I downloaded them I would need so much damn space it wouldn't even be funny.

I am referring to smaller games though too...there are many people like me and the game publishers know this.  That is why often times it is not clear nowadays whether the packaged games you get with a system are digital or physical.  Some people just don't care when they are getting the wool pulled over their eyes, but I always find out before I buy.  God of war collection with the 5 games...not purchased, sorry.  I got into an argument on here about that game too.  People didn't even realize there was a deadline to download the psp games on the collection...

JustArtificial
JustArtificial

@mikedelta-09 @JustArtificial Now is the time everyone IS considering Next-Gen, because no games will carry over. Almost no point in spending money for a console, that you may not use soon.

The 360 version does NOT require an internet connection. You download it, and you're free to play away. Online and offline. IF a person has poor internet, I highly doubt it would have taken a person over a year to download 100MB.

The PC version is superior, pure fact. The fact that you question it, makes me question you as a gamer. The PC version has servers, can easily have over 8 per room, has infinite worlds, is miles ahead in updates, has support from Mojang rather than 4J and has the use of mods as well as character editors.

If you want to explain why someone has less than 0.01 internet speed or why the PC is inferior then go ahead. I'm really curious as to how you think.

@DSCesq Not to bad? oh about 20 people muitiplayer and dedicated servers

DWalker131
DWalker131

@Donrock12 @DWalker131 well if your looking at smaller games, i can actually relate to that as well or anything thats "digital ONLY", its kind of forgotten and never thaat popular, but the original xbox had online features as well, ofcourse all the servers are down now so the original xbox online feeatures pretty much never existed,  now if you have a console thats digital ONLY your game server better be up for a lifetime literally !, coz i'd be gutted to buy 100 games at $80 a pop only to find out i have a giant console  paperweight coz the online server is gone, and i have no disc games
