Modern Warfare 3 teaser site opens?

Bare-bones countdown points to further reveal at next week's Game Developers Conference; Activision calls the site a "hoax."

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, Activision issued a statement that appeared to deny any association with the website Findmakarov.com. "There seems to be a great deal of speculation about the next Call of Duty project. Let me be clear that we are not revealing yet. Anything indicating otherwise is a hoax." The original story is below.

In 2009, Activision used the Game Developers Choice Awards--the Game Developers Conference's award ceremony--to premiere the trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The preview was a bare-bones affair, with audio clips auguring the controversial content of the now-internationally infamous "No Russian" airport-massacre level.

Is this the first glimpse of Modern Warfare 3?

Now, it appears history is about to repeat itself--almost. This morning, the site findmakarov.com opened with graphics and sound cues straight out of Modern Warfare 2's ad campaign. The site's title also references Vladimir Makarov, the ultranationalist terrorist who was the primary villain for a large portion of the 2009 blockbuster actioner--more than hinting at a Modern Warfare 3 reveal. (The site itself is owned by a URL-registration front company used by corporations to hide their web domains.)

After briefly flashing a shadowy figure (pictured) in military fatigues and a beret, Findmakarov.com posts a countdown clock that ends at 7 a.m. PST on the morning of Wednesday, March 2. The date marks the busiest day of the Game Developers Conference, one that will see both the GDCAs and a keynote address by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata. It is also the day that Apple is holding a nearby press conference at which it will likely unveil the next iPad.

If the Modern Warfare 3 reveal comes next Wednesday, it will be for a game with a checkered development history. Though not yet officially announced by Activision, the game is rumored to be in the works at Infinity Ward, a studio that spent much of last year wracked by controversy. Following the firing of its cofounders Jason West and Vince Zampella, the Los Angeles shop saw massive staff defections. However, rumors have the game still in the works at a "reconstructed" Infinity Ward, albeit with the assistance of two other Activision studios: Madison, Wisconsin-based Raven Software and Redwood City, CA-based Sledgehammer Games.

@Phil-teh-Pirate just thought I'd point out that accepting correction and adjusting your views accordingly doesn't make you a sell-out. Standing by an obviously false set of facts, however, will result in self-humiliation.

@StJimmy15 @lithius Thanks for the humiliation. Really beating it into me eh? I admit I became a little defensive. But hey, I had 3 people turn on me whilst having a bad day. What am I going to do? Abandon my opinion because 3 different people go "You're wrong because of this this and this"? Say what you will, I'm going to stand by what I said. I'll apologise for whatever you think I'm wrong for but don't try to belittle me or attack me for having an opinion. Thanks.

@lithus you sir, are the man @Phil-teh-Pirate You should check out the voting system... there seem to be a lot of red numbers beneath your posts. Btw, your "rebuttal" was mediocre at best. Proving that the FF horse has been beaten within an inch of its life is hardly "putting me in my place." Apology accepted.
Ugh so many people to put in place. But hey, I love a challenge.
With arrogance comes delusion. You can play semantics all day long, which you have done anyway. With numbers that don't say a damn thing. Did it ever enter that small brain of yours that CoD is mainly an online multiplayer? It's more dynamic than a single player RPG. Thus needing better revisions to keep people happy. But it doesn't change the fact that Final Fantasy, like MW/CoD is just another FRANCHISE. Ya readin me sport? Another widget off the assembly line. Play it any angle you want there tiger, FF is no different than any other franchise. Same game, just new characters, weapons and locals. Get off your high horse. Dismissive dink.

@jasonzilla11 that's cause that's all the website was for was just to promote the trailer.

If MW3 has a map editor which everyone has been asking for, for a long time since CoD4 came out it wouldn't feel so repetitive. And I'm not talking about Forging a map like in halo, but actually making one from scratch. Far Cry 2 had a map editor, so can MW3 if Infinity Ward would actually listen to the community! -I know you can make maps on PC for any cod but console would be amazing.

@Phil-teh-Pirate Sorry, let's make a Fight Night Shooter to be innovative. Can't argue with fanboys, I'll wake you up when the 3rd person Call of Duty gets released. Bye.

Phil-teh-Pirate
Phil-teh-Pirate

@Crash_WL You can argue the toss all you like but the fact of the matter is a series that Final Fantasy has spanned 23 years over 9 different consoles and platforms and has tried its hand at numerous DIFFERENT genres (not including action, racing and strategy along its RPG roots). When was the last CoD game in its 8 year run not a FPS? Any you can think of? Checking wikipedia now just incase? Well fine do please enlighten me if you find one I'd love to know. And yes if you aren't going to count World at War : final fronts as a separate game what gives you the right to count Final Fantasy re-releases? Wake me up when CoD is original again, I'll go play Final Fantasy 13, which is completely different to 8, which was completely different to 10, and completely different to 7 which was also different to 4...so on so forth.

Crash_WL
Crash_WL

@Phil-teh-Pirate There are 8 Call of Duty games, except if you count (for example) World at War: Final Fronts as a separate game, etc. Want to include any game? 15, including collections, expansions, and the "Zombies" spin-off. Final Fantasy... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Final_Fantasy_video_games#Main_series-related_games You can read yourself, I won't bother reading over 50+ games. If I remember correctly, there are 72 Final Fantasy games out so far. Call of Duty gets released annually, and it's always a main entry. Final Fantasy release all kinds of games, each year. When you're talking about milking a FRANCHISE, you should talk about everything involving the franchise, not main entries only. Call of Duty has yet to spawn a movie, while Final Fantasy has, even an anime. Talking about milking, each main Final Fantasy title gets a "Versus" title too, now that's... wait... milking?

Phil-teh-Pirate
Phil-teh-Pirate

Ugh so many people to put in place. But hey, I love a challenge. @Crash_WL @lithus @StJimmy15 All those mentioned have been released over (what someone else rightly quoted) 23 years. Sure theres been spin offs, but heres more "Simple maths" (Stjimmy15 loves that stuff). 23 years = 28 games (main titles, spin offs, hand held games and expansions) Way to go Final Fantasy! Ok I was wrong, I got development times wrong, but take a look at the time between 11 and 12...4 years passed. More simple maths for the simple minded! 8 years = The length of time CoD has been a franchise. How many games? 13, just like I said with FF thats across all genres and platforms. Thats a CoD game released every 6-8 months. So with basic maths (I'm looking at you again Jimmy) we've now worked out that whilst Final Fantasy has had 28 games over 23 years, thats a release every 1 - 2 years. CoD has had a new installment out every 6-8 months in just 8 years... So yes...Yes I will defend Final Fantasy. Thank you.

@lolman360 Your right, Skyrim will beat everything, L.A Noire will be good too. COD games are way to mast produced, and they should also give us time between Black ops and Mw3 (not that im looking forward to it)

ok, ok. I will give activision some leeway if they ever come out with a CoD that focuses solely on Vietnam. Until then, I'm good.

You do realize that Modern Warfare 2 did finish on a cliff hanger, so it's not like Modern Warfare 3 will be a whole new story and just being made to make more money (mainly that but thats business for ya).

Already time for the yearly coat of paint? Hopefully they choose a nice color - it's not like they're gonna change or add anything that MW2 doesn't have, or really anything CoD4 doesn't have, for that matter, so the only thing that could possibly make this a groundbreaking game, by Activision's logic, is if they give a reallllllly nice coat of paint. Black Ops was nice, but it wasn't a color that you'd want to paint your house, or anything.

@will-p101 Activision have not said they don't own it, they just haven't confirmed anything; it's all part of the tedious little game they play to whip up furore amongst little fanboys, and by calling it a hoax you're just complicit in their boring little scheme. I won't be buying this game, what's the point? All the creativity left with West and Zampella, Infinity Ward is just a brand name of Activision now.

Timstuff
Timstuff

If this is for MW3, it would appear that Activision is quite sure of their chances in West and Zampella's lawsuit against them. They'll be pretty screwed if the court rules that Respawn owns the Modern Warfare IP and not Activision.

StJimmy15
StJimmy15

@Phil-teh-Pirate Well, its a 23 year old series... with over 14 installments. Um, if my basic math is still correct thats around 1-2 years in-between games, not counting the most recent. And Final Fantasy is nowhere comparable to Modern Warfare. Its like comparing Pan's Labyrinth to the Expendables.

lithus

@Phil-teh-Pirate: lol seriously? You're trying to defend Final Fantasy over MW when it comes to releasing "another" title? Honestly whats so different about FF than MW? FF is still just another RPG with FF written all over it, just like MW is just another shooter. Atleast MW doesn't have a constant barrage of metro-sexual protagonists weilding rediculously over-sized swords and whining about saving the world for the hundreth time....

Crash_WL

@Phil-teh-Pirate Yeah, like Dissidia, Chocobo Racing, Crystal Defenders, XIV, Dirge of Cerberus; they have yet to release Final Fantasy Football.

they are really trying to make the same mistake as Guitar hero...

Phil-teh-Pirate
Phil-teh-Pirate

@Crash_WL Every Final Fantasy game has a different story, different gameplay, different characters, different worlds, different locations, different weapons, different everything. CoD has more of the same every year, just with increasingly dumb plots and voices.... Oh and main series Final Fantasy games are created every 3 or 4 years. No more. No Less.
