Modern Warfare 2 DLC sells 2.5 million

Infinity Ward's controversial Stimulus Package sets unspecified Xbox Live record with double-platinum sales during first week; Valve offering free multiplayer on PC this weekend.

Activision has been taking fire from gamers on a number of fronts lately, with one source of ire being the pricing on the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's Stimulus Package. The $15 add-on from controversy-plagued Infinity Ward included three new multiplayer maps and two updated arenas from the original Modern Warfare. That price represented a $5 premium over map packs released for 2008's Call of Duty: World at War, which included three new maps and a zombie-themed co-op battleground.

Still, those expressing grievances couldn't stop many from purchasing the game en masse. Activision said today that the Stimulus Package for its $1 billion shooter was downloaded more than 1 million times within 24 hours of availability on the Xbox 360, with sales jumping to 2.5 million within the first week.

So much for viva la resistance?

Activision claims that these sales figures have set a new Xbox Live high-water mark, though the publisher did not indicate which specific record had been beaten. It did say, however, that Modern Warfare 2 players have spent more than 1.75 billion hours of combined game time through Xbox Live since the shooter launched in November. A request for clarification had not been returned as of press time.

In other Modern Warfare 2 news, Valve said today that gamers can check out the PC edition's multiplayer component free of charge this weekend. The free game time begins April 8, and gamers can preload the Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer mode now through Valve's online distribution service Steam.

The Stimulus Package is also slated to arrive for PlayStation 3 and PC at an as-yet-unannounced date. Check out GameSpot's video walk-through of the five maps, below, for an idea of what to expect from the Stimulus Package.

With MW3, Infinity Ward announced that they will fix bugs and glitches faster! The weaponry and perks in Call of Duty: MW3 will also be more balanced and the Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will have a working party chat system. Infinity Ward has also revealed that it has revamped the entire killstreak reward system!

everytime you buy dlc that should be free you are voting to to get screwed over and over again. Complain all you want but the all mighty dollar is all that really matters.

They should've made more maps for the game because they maps are getting old I don't play the game as much as i used to at home because it's boring. it's fun to talk to people but that's it. do something better with the game that gamers would like and agree with.

The DLC is alright but they need to make it where u can play the bonus maps on multiplayer(split screen) without having to be online to play them. like why should someone have to be online. what if people are at a military school, like myself and they can't get online but they have the bonus maps i select it but it wants me to be online. i don't think that's right. Fix the problem Activision

Well, now we can expect future DLC to be expensive. I can't believe 2.5 million people got this. v_v

$15 may not be much but to charge that for 3 maps is appalling. Just browse for maps on any FPS on the PC and you will find a bazillion different maps for free - many of them as expertly made as MW2's maps would be. You people were robbed.

Well if anyone wants GOOD and MORE download content for CHEAPER then people would stop buying this outrageously priced crap.Get some common sense you dickheads, this should be free as most of it was already on the disk and so is the next content you can easily find hacked games of global thermonuclear warfare on xbox 360(next DLC gamemode). I mean your buying a quarter of the game for 3 new maps and 2 old ones.A game isn't just comprised of multiplayer and campaign it can actually take years of work to fully tweak these things out to make a proper video game.Your buying maybe one-two weeks worth of there time and they've done it BEFORE THE GAME WAS RELEASED they even said at E3 last year they were making the DLC before it was out so it just proves they've got you by the balls. Well you can't blame them selling this ridiculous price, who wouldn't take advantage over 2.5 million idiots?

I'm sorry but the phrase map pack to me means at least 10 fresh new maps...im just sayin. Its definitely not 2 new maps and 3 old ones (or whatever the hell you guys bought into) You guys do realize that you paid a quarter of the price of the game for 2, count'em TWO new maps... you can sit there and say "WELL DON'T BUY THEM THEN!" all you want but you do realize you're a moron right...? Juss checkin Edit: please refer to the comment wiskymaster made to know what I'm talkin about. There are few things in this world better than sex and its definitely not paying $15 for 2 maps. As a matter of fact, I'd rather save that money to pay for sex....lolz

ROFL. Map pack is a buzzword, a buzzword for something that used to be free.. a bunch of maps. So excited for something of such superficial and fabricated value by these conglomerate publishers. The phrase map pack pisses me off; it's bandwagon marketing for a can of perfumed air. But if you put someone in a box and restrict their food supply, they'll start paying for uncooked noodles I guess. IW did it and 2.5 million people love it, so keep crunching.

laplace985
laplace985

LOL. If I was infinity ward I'll charge everybody 25$ for the next map pack. 2 new maps and 3 old ones. They are in the business of making money and if idiots keep buying it then they have to assume they are doing a good job. I'm not paying 15$ for that garbage. Its not that I can't afford it; I just don't want to give game makers and incentive to rip me off. Good thing I have a ps3 because I would of bought it on day one too LOL. I was mad but now I kind of see an advantage of having a ps3. Thanks Microsoft for saving me 15$.

It makes me giggle that although there seems to be a load of people that dont like it, the fact still remains that this 'DLC' has sold in excess of 2.5 million copies in 5 days! thats more than some recent AAA titles have achieved!

Grovel
Grovel

As long as people keep paying for it, they are going to continue to pull this crap and raise the price of all their dlc.

Treewalrus
Treewalrus

The really sad part is that if this DLC had been $20, it probably still would have broken the sales record. At least my conscience is clean. I didn't support this thievery.

whiskymaster

I would be happy to pay $20 for the maps. They are like, so totally awesome dudes :-D Better than Sex. Excellent work IW

Treewalrus
Treewalrus

So they got away with it. I wish I could say I didn't see this coming. Now that iw knows that they can overcharge for shoddy content like this with the complete support of its consumer, I expect outrageously priced DLC to slowly become the norm in this industry. I wouldn't be surprised if the next CoD bundle were 20 bucks.

Wow...congrats to all. Everyone had a chance to really just sock it to these companies..instead they got paid, and probably with that the price increases of most other DLC will arrive shortly.

@Yo-Mamas-Pimp Call of duty modern warfare 2 sold millions of copies yet the game was a huge fail, got more complaints then they can handle. The game has huge issues that IW haven't fixed and probably can't due to the matchmaking system. The perks and weapons are all over the place, the maps are garbage. Even if the the maps sold 4.7 milllion, it doesn't mean thier good moron, think logically, thats why cod mw2 has gotten such terrible reviews??? and the maps are now recieveing a 4.0 average which again is a fail. Guess what idiot, if people like garbage and 5 million people purchase it, at the end of the day, its still garbage. And that my friend is how it is a fail.

Glade_Gnarr

Soooo after everyone started complaining all over Gamespot that they'd NEVER buy this DLC and that they'll go play BF:BC2 instead, it still sells 2.5 million copies and sets a record? So pretty much most of those people are a bunch of chronic liars AND complainers!

Bought it but it cost me £2 so doesn't matter. The maps are awful and never worth £12 ever.

Yea that was way too overpriced. We got 2 Old stages that should have been free...and we shouldnt have had to pay 15$ for 3 more maps...

Why would anyone buy this when BFBC2 gives out maps for free? And to the fanboys here; there's no need to single out the 360. This DLC will also come to the PS3 soon, which will also sell millions. It's the casuals FAULT! RAAAAGEEE!!

oh, but don't get me wrong. Kotick does come across like a douc-e. but you know, he employs a lot of talented artists, programmers, project managers and writers. he's not the whole company.

ferntfactor

how dare you let supply meet demand, Activision! once all the complainers are in business for themselves they'll begin to understand the real world. in our business we're expected to have the best talent, work around the clock and deliver immediately to every client that's gotten themselves in a lurch. but a lot of the most miserable ones also expect it for free. well that's not much of a sustainable business model. we deal with this ridiculous, entitled attitude every day. things cost money to make. talent costs money to hire. promotion costs money to get. that's life. buy it or don't. it's 15 friggin bucks and a lot of things in life are a much worse deal.

Alexadecimal
Alexadecimal

I guess Activision are laughing all the way to the bank. Thing is I live in the UK, so it's not just $15 its £15, which is just rediculous for a few new maps. £15 could buy a couple of great XBL arcade games, but it seems people are more interested in stuff like this. Shame this is the way the games industry is moving.

What's most hilarious is that ps3 fanboys are making negative comments about the stimulus package. COD will sell a lot on the ps3. ps3 fans are outraged that they can't play the package first.

It seems that the $15 price tag didn't turn away as much business as I thought.... At any rate, I'm still holding onto *my* money until the price goes down.

Illumination77

The outrage over this is hilarious. Spending $60 on a copy of uncharted or mgs you'll play exactly ONCE before trading in after 9 hours of gameplay is money well spent. But $15 on dlc you'll get hundreds of hours out of (if you play online)? The worst outrage that's ever happened to anyone OMGWTFBBQ. I will bet moeny that most of you who are complaining about MW2 don't even play it. How DARE someone have different tastes and concepts of value then you. How dare they.

My issue is less about the cost of the DLC, but more about why so many people continue to support such a mediocre game.

Chaceace100

@Alan1187 How can you be shocked? They sold like 10 million copies of this game and 1/4 of the people bought it in the first week! Expect more sales! Wouldn't be surprised if everyone except for the people who own this game on this site will buy it.

Chaceace100
Chaceace100

We know yall are just jealous that you don't have it... and will keep complaining about the price of DLC... I LOVED the map pack, and the extra free week we got was awesome since mine subscription happened to expire on the 31st. Saved me a week to buy another one year card. Which I haven't bought yet cuz bills and what not. But anyways thanks Activision, even though it's a bit overpriced, these are quality maps! So you are paying for what you get!
