Mobile Suit Gundam Seed: Never Ending Tomorrow Hands-On

We strap ourselves into a mobile suit and check out a near-finished build of this anime-inspired action game for the PS2.

Earlier today, at a Bandai press event in San Francisco, we had an opportunity to check out a near-finished version of Mobile Suit Gundam Seed: Never Ending Tomorrow, which we last saw at E3 earlier this year. If you're a fan of the Gundam Seed universe, Never Ending Tomorrow will let you relive key battles from the TV show from the perspectives of both Kira Yamato and Athron Zala. If you know as much about Gundam Seed as we do, your best bet might be to just think of it as a game that lets you fight giant robots (yeah, we know, they're not actually robots) against other giant robots. As well, the game uses more than 40 minutes of clips from a cool-looking cartoon to tell a story about a futuristic war between the Earth Alliance and the forces of ZAFT.

Although Never Ending Tomorrow's story mode only lets you play as either Kira or Athron, the game features more than 50 different mobile suits that you can pilot in its versus, survival, and single mission modes. Battles in Mobile Suit Gundam Seed: Never Ending Tomorrow are fought either on the ground or in space, and although neither of the environments are particularly easy on the eyes by today's standards, you'll barely have time to notice once you climb into your mobile suit and start fighting. The mobile suit models, incidentally, look great, especially when they're using melee attacks to pummel one another at close range.

Since all the mobile suits are able to fly for short periods of time, even the ground battles in Mobile Suit Gundam Seed: Never Ending Tomorrow can be pretty demanding, at least as far as keeping track of your targets is concerned. Once you're locked on to a target, the camera does a reasonably good job of keeping you both onscreen at all times. However, there were occasions when it appeared we were viewing the action from the perspective of our enemy, which was confusing to the point that we'd briefly second-guess ourselves trying to remember which mobile suit was ours. If you're a fan of the show, of course, you probably won't have that problem, but to the untrained eye, a lot of these mobile suits look very similar, you know.

We'll bring you more on Mobile Suit Gundam Seed: Never Ending Tomorrow as its September 27 release date approaches.
