MMO-esque Splinter Cell game The Division coming to Xbox One, PS4

New third-person shooter from Massive Entertainment launching fall 2014 only on next-generation platforms.

by

Ubisoft today announced a massively multiplayer online-esque open-world role-playing game set in the Splinter Cell universe called The Division.

The game will launch during fall 2014 exclusively for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. There will be no PC version.

Ubisoft Massive managing director David Polfeld explained to media this week that the game, at present, does not support the Kinect or the PS4's touchpad.

The Division runs on the Snowdrop Engine, a name based on the term for the first flower that blooms after winter. Polfeld explained that Tom Clancy himself has no involvement in the project.

Damn no PC .... This game is going to be for 2013 - 2014 what WatchDogs was for 2012 - 2013 - the talk of the town !!!

The only room for improvement was that they should have used the name "Directive 51"
The Division sounds too film noir-ish.

After all's said and done though, I'm stoked for this title.

I think this game would work fantastically as a PC title, and thats more cash for Ubisoft. Giving us PC gamers the crap end of this doesnt seem like a smart business decision.

No PC version? Good! We have enough MMO's as it is, we don't need a MMO-esque title as well.

So many damn MMO games announced.....

It's very refreshing to know that the industry still relies on Tom Clancy for all the good stuff. Absolute buy.

I know one thing for sure. Massive Entertainment has never released a failed title. This is gonna be huge. I wish it was for PC.

The video of this game made me wanna touch myself, have to be honest.

Ubisoft needs to fix their damn server issues before they start talking MMO.  Ghost Recon Future Soldier, which had a max match size of 6 v 6, was full of server issues that, to this day, are still unstable and very buggy.  I found the multiplayer to be a lot of fun with friends, whenever the servers were stable, but more often than not, there was massive lag, slow hit detection, server outages, games crashing mid-match..games crashing while trying to connect to a match...etc.  If they can't get a simple 6 vs 6 match to run smoothly, then I don't have much faith in their attempts at an MMO.  Love the Tom Clancy games...but Ubisoft's MP execution is shoddy at best.

Why does UBI hate us PC gamers?!?!?!?

Why do we PC gamers have to beg for another console port!?!?!?!?

Could be interesting. Reminds me of the SOE game The Agency that got canned; we need some good spy games without
James Bond in the title

this is one online game id actually consider playing, and i dont much care for them, not since i lost interest in WoW several years ago.... and the gameplay looks pretty remarkable running on the PS4..  i'm guessing it's pretty much focused on New York City in terms of the open-world environment..?

@SuperXShnaayin I think with these next-gen titles, the strategy is to advertise for the Xbox One and PS4 exclusively, while leaving some doubt as to whether there will be a PC release or not.

They know people in the PC game market are gonna be like "Awww, I really wanna play this game, but if its not on PC, I might as well get a console so I could check it out."

@Hurvl Do you even believe what you say? This game looks amazing, I just hope they will launch it on PC too... eventually

@jecomans Ouch man were all gamers here. You didn't have to be like that, PC gamers just want to avoid the crap that some consoles throw at us.

@Imperiacommando Yes, too many games so i'm actually a bit relieved that this isn't coming to PC. Then again, I've never played a Splinter Cell game and don't like MMO's *or* MMO-esque games, so I'm not really a part of their target audience.

@tsunami2311 Had the same reaction at the end. Why not an awesome single player tactical TPS?

@eternal_man101 @SuperXShnaayin Yeah lol, the strategy is to trick as many people as possible (who already own gaming PC's) into buying one/both of the consoles just for the 1-2 'killer' exclusives...

But knowing Ubisoft, a month before launch they will go, oh yeah PC too :P

Hurvl

@BrutalMyth For me it's singleplayer or GTFO! No multiplayer focused titles, no MMO-esque titles and certainly no MMO's. I don't want to be social or "social" (as in social media) when I play games, it's just me and the game world, with no real world interference from other people.

@shruteshkumar @SuperXShnaayin Wow, that was meant to be an intentionally facetious reply to some jerk on another article. I should pay more attention.

I have nothing, per se, against the PC crowd. I think a lot of people on each platform spend too much time justifying to others their platform of choice, and not enough time talking about the games they play. I try not to fall into that, but everyone slips up sometimes.

What I said was pointlessly rude without the context (where it was still rude, but with a purpose) of the chat I'd been having. My apologies.

@ringraul @holtrocks Its still possible to pirate console games, and there are ways that companies can get around pirating. Plus if the game looks good enough, people wont get a crappy pirated version, they will buy the full thing.

Elann2008
Elann2008

@ringraul

I'm not saying you believe that, but the publishers definitely do.  In most cases, the console versions are the first to be pirated and in large numbers.  I don't know if they are being pirated more than their PC counterparts but they are being pirated.

GhostOfSparta4

You'd have a really difficult time trying to pirate an online RPG. This game is perfect for PC.

@ringraul @holtrocks i just want to drag ubi's ass to the third world countries and show them how much their game are being pirated on consoles. and its an mmo so point in pirating it.

@shruteshkumar It would create a strange market where we all basically play highly interactive PC's. With cross compatibility the various makers of consoles would have to differentiate somehow - simple models, high class models, connectivity features - basically a PC fully connected into your TV, internet and game ecosystem. To cater to them all they'd produce games that play at different specs on different models. This Gen already console architecture is becoming very much like a dedicated gaming PC, so it's not a stretch to think that the next generation (2018-20) could be something like that.

shruteshkumar
shruteshkumar

@jecomans @shruteshkumar @SuperXShnaayin Np man, we are all gamers here; What I want to see one day is a Open industry with all games available on all platforms with cross platform play and connectivity between all platforms.

Very likely it will forever remain a pipe dream lol.
