MLB 2K5 swings into postseason

Virtual World Series beats real championship to TVs; new edition features best of Fall Classic in DVD, updated rosters.

Those who have enjoyed watching this year's Major League Baseball playoffs likely can't wait to get the final leg started. The Chicago White Sox, one of MLB's oldest franchises, haven't won the championship since 1917, a dubious feat topped only by their crosstown rivals, the lovable losers known as the Cubs. The Houston Astros are venturing in to uncharted territory, having never even made it to the World Series since the team's inception in 1960. One of these teams will end a long drought by bringing the trophy home.

With so much drama on tap, hardcore baseball fans are having a difficult time waiting for the start of the Fall Classic (first pitch is Saturday). But thanks to 2K Sports, some of that fervor can be tempered with Major League Baseball 2K5: World Series Edition, which shipped to stores today for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox.

This new version of the annual spring release includes updated rosters, new game modes, and a bonus DVD that showcases some of the World Series' greatest moments. For those who would rather play some of these annals of Cooperstown, World Series mode lets gamers try the scenarios in-game. Fans of teams who saw their playoff hopes dashed in August or in the last home stand of the season can also rewrite history. Pennant chase mode ignores this year's 162-game regular season and puts a team of the players' choice right in the heart of the real 2005 pennant race.

Major League Baseball 2K5: World Series Edition is rated E for Everyone and retails for $24.99.
