MLB 2K series is finished

2K Sports confirms it will not renew contract for 2014.

The MLB 2K series is finished.

A 2K Sports representative told Joystiq today that the publisher "decided not to renew our MLB 2K series for 2014. We are very proud of the achievements made by the MLB 2K team and look forward to their contributions to our future titles, including NBA 2K."

The series did not go out on a strong note. MLB 2K13 was critically panned for being essentially the same game as its predecessor, featuring only roster updates.

Rumors of the MLB 2K franchise's closure began to swirl today after sites featuring content about the series were closed--suggesting 2K no longer had licensing rights.

With the MLB 2K series now out of the mix, Sony's PlayStation-exclusive MLB The Show series will be the only baseball series in town. Xbox fans are out of luck.

So are we gamers glad that certain sports games are only available from certain publishers?

Sony has baseball

2K Sports has basketball

EA has football, soccer, golf, and basketball

Where's the diversity? I remember years ago when EA would make sports games for everything, even cricket. 2K Sports really needs to step it up if they want to compete with EA on all levels.

Sad too see competition die down, but MLB: The Show is the best baseball game ever. Hell, it's the best sports game around. This is one of my reason to getting a PS4. The baseball torch is in excellent hands.

Bro could they be making room to try and make a bit for the NCAA football or maybe even NFL I can dream right...

MVP gonna make a comeback?  If not, looks like I'll be getting a PS4 in March instead of the Xbone.

Hopefully the folks making The Show still push the boundary!

I saw a video of the making of the upcoming MLB 14 The Show for the PS4.  This was a good business move on your part, 2k.  There's no need to look ridiculous...lol.

I was seriously looking for that next gen flare in sports game and I still haven't seen nothing yet....NBA 2k tried but it jus wasn't enough it still felt like current gen with a graphic boost the same as madden......man sony and Xbox 1 really need step they game up if they wanna be around for a few more years because now  they have have to watch out for steam, tablets and whatever else that's out dere that's tryna compete

MLB the show kicked the crap out this series anyway. One of the 2k baseball games I played once looked and felt like a ps2 game. And with MLB the show improving greatly on the Road to the Show mode now, there is no contest this series is dead.

AWESOME!!! Now they can make another Bad News Baseball!!! /sarcasm

The Show is by FAR the best baseball game available anyway, at least on Playstation. Can't wait to see what it looks like on PS4.

Hopefully EA will get back into Baseball with their MVP series. EA always made the better Baseball games but 2K got the exclusive license. 2K made the better Football games but EA got the exclusive license. So we gamers got stuck with the worst company making the sports games.

Well, maybe it's high time 2K sports branch out to test new waters? Otherwise, maybe make major improvements for NBA 2k?

TJSpyke

Ugh, now the only MLB games are on the inferior PlayStation systems. Hopefully EA gets a MLB license again since the MVP series was pretty good

I'm excited for this. Now there's the chance for another developer to potentially make an even better MLB game than that of The Show. I do hope that whoever does take up the challenge that they would basically copy the control scheme that the 2K games used. In spite of all its shortcomings, I think the controls (gameplay? whatever) in those games were about as perfect as you could get.

I don't know if SEGA still had something to do with the 2k series, but if they don't then they should revive the World Series Baseball series.

well that sucks ass. it's bad enough 2K games can't make football games anymore (thanks to EA hogging up the NFL license thus ruining any chance of playing any nfl 2k games since 2K5 was superior) and now baseball is getting the axe.

wouldn't be surprised if the2K basketball games became next to get the axe.

2k baseball games use to be the shit on dreamcast and after dreamcast died everything went downhill from there

Microsoft need to start back making sports games and 989 sports do too......i kinda missed playing NFL fever, NBA inside drive, NFL gameday, NBA shootout etc....and It sure as hell would be nice if they bring NFL 2k back along with college hoops....man PS2 and xbox were the good ole days

2K just doesn't have any luck with sports games outside of their NBA titles.

I played a couple of the 2K baseball games. They were okay, but if you owned a Sony console there was no reason to play them.

To give credit were it's due, the 2K baseball games had a nice pitching interface and the play-by-play commentary was very good.

2K Sports should bring back The Bigs titles. They were fun. With 2K Baseball gone, maybe EA will pick up the MLB third-party license and resurrect MVP Baseball?

there goes NFL 2k chance of ever coming back......I hoper they make the next WWE 2k installment the next best sport game

Lets see the last Base ball game i played was Ken Griffey Jr Presents Major League Bassball. This was around the mid 90's.

The last baseball game I ever played was All Star Baseball 99. Sports games overall are atrocious and bottom of the barrel when it comes to gaming genres in general.

It was such an awful game.  I wish they had put in half the work they did on NBA 2k.

There is no way Sony will allow MLB:The Show on XBox. Unless, of course, Microsoft decides to port Titanfall to PS4. Its unfortunately become that sort of game now.

Im looking forward the next gen version of "The Show"  Its always looked great on PS3, i cant wait to see it on PS4.

Please god let this happen to the EA-NFL license. I've been waiting for a new NFL 2k for almost 10 years now. Make it happen.

@honeycomb06 True, but then what can you really do with a sport game, besides adding a few modes and graphical boost? Of course improved AI and physics, but you know what I mean.

hyru99

@TJSpyke BTW this supposed inferior Playstation your speak, beat out the 2k series in baseball every year with MLB the show. So much for inferior...

hyru99

@TJSpyke Inferior PS systems? Its quite obvious your a fanboy and trying to start a MS PS debate here.

@happyfatman021 Uhhh...have you seen the YouTube video of MLB 14 The Show for PS4?  Pshyeah...lol.  NOBODY'S making a baseball game better than that, let me tell you...

tc0072

@Ranma_X_basic Same with football, Pro Evo Soccer was always better than FIFA. FIFA made an inferior product but bought up all the licenses so PES played better but all the team names were wrong. Now we're stuck with FIFA as the No 1 football (sorry soccer for the yanks) game and PES get's less development because it earns less.

I tried the demo for FIFA 14 on PS4 and it's terrible, the AI is so bad compared to PES. Just preying that they get PES 15 to sing on PS4/XB1 on the fox engine.

TJSpyke
TJSpyke

@Ranma_X_basic Even at $20 and with the ESPN name, ESPN NFL 2K5 did not sell as well as Madden NFL 2005. And they can still make a football game, just without the NFL license (though their last attempt, All-Pro Football 2K8 bombed). The NBA 2K series though gets strong sales

@Vambran That's not too bad...I last remember playing World Class Baseball on my Turbografx 16...possibly in the 90's

tc0072
tc0072

@RiKanKiDD They are, thank EA for buying up all the big licenses for that. It's just like M$ controlling the operating system and office suites 20 years ago, no competition so no need to improve. Just churn out the same game year after year with minor changes and some different faces.

Used to love Tiger golf, think it was '11 that putting was completely unplayable on PS3, pile of shite.

@RiKanKiDDFPS games are boring. RPG's are boring. Adventure games are boring. RTS games are boring. Platformers are boring. You are boring me with your stupidity.

tc0072

@t_julius23 EA will never drop a lucrative licence, that's how they keep their stranglehold on sports games. Just wait and see if they don't go after the MLB licence as well.

TJSpyke

@hyru99 @TJSpyke The Xbox 360 was superior to the PS3 in every way. And The MLB series was the only successful sports franchise Sony has The PlayStation brand itself is still inferior.

TJSpyke
TJSpyke

@murph85 Sports franchises published by Sony: MLB Pennant Race, NBA ShootOut, NCAA Final Four, NCAA Game Breaker, NFL Game Day, NFL Xtreme, NHL Faceoff, Rally Cross, XJ Junior League, ESPN Xtreme, Formula One, NBA, World Rally Championship, and a bunch of crappy ESPN branded games they released on SNES.

murph85

@TJSpyke @hyru99 MLB The Show is the only sports franchise that Sony has. I don't think they've tried any others.

TJSpyke

@tc0072 You lost all credibility the moment you typed "M$", which is the ultimate trollish fanboy comment. Try again loser.

tc0072
tc0072

@TJSpyke @hyru99 "Xbox let's play ball!", oh no wait, you can't.

Since you're on a thread about a baseball game being cancelled you must be pretty annoyed about this. Now name a sport's franchise M$ has an exclusive for. They don't, EA has most sports titles tied up which is a shame because they suck ass, like FIFA.

Troll hard and long fan boy, troll hard.

TJSpyke
TJSpyke

@hyru99 Please name another Sony sports franchise still in existence. Oh wait, you can't because they all failed. You obviously fail read comprehension because I said sports franchise, not any Sony franchise.

The Xbox 360 controller is vastly superior to the drech that was the DualShock 3 (I have seen many Sony fanboys who even admitted the DS3 was not a great controller). You are such a Sony fanboy (I am not a Microsoft fanboy, I am primarily a Nintendo fan, but love the Xbox 360 too). I do own a PS3, but the only real use I get from it is as a good Blu-ray Disc player

hyru99
hyru99

@TJSpyke @hyru99 Everthing your saying is straight from the mouth of a fanboy. To say the Xbox360 was better than the PS3 is pure perspective, seeing as exclusives are the deciding factor in the end. I have a Sony PS3 and I have NEVER seen the need for a 360 really. And because MS makes games also on PC, there is another reason.

To say MLB the show was the only successful title is beyond ignorant dude, There are many PS exclusives that would beg to disagree with your comment.

Stop being a fanboy and comment on the game itself not the system its played on, because your pulling false info out of thin air.

TJSpyke

@Ranma_X_basic Except Wii Sports (which IS a sports game) has sold 82 million copies, Wii Sports Resort 31.89 million. What are your sources for NBA 2K selling better than Madden?
