Minecraft Xbox 360 sells 5 million

Console version of Mojang's indie sandbox game goes quintuple platinum following launch in May.

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition is a big hit. The console version of Mojang's indie sandbox game reached 5 million in sales on Monday, according to Mojang business developer Daniel Kaplan.

By comparison, the PC and Mac versions of Minecraft has sold 8.7 million copies as of this writing. The entire franchise--PC/Mac, mobile, and Xbox 360 versions--has accounted for more than 17.5 million in sales to date. More than 453,000 copies of Minecraft franchise games were sold on Christmas Day alone.

Upon launch on May 9, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition became profitable in just one hour, selling more than 400,000 copies during its first 24 hours on sale, and breaking all previous Xbox Live arcade digital sales records. The game reached 1 million in sales in just five days, and dethroned Call of Duty from the top of the Xbox Live activity chart for one week in October.

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition was developed by 4J Studios, the Scotland-based shop that built the Xbox Live Arcade titles Perfect Dark, Banjo-Kazooie, and Banjo-Tooie. It retails for $20. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's review.

I'm sorry but I bought this game after finally giving into all the hype and I sat there thinking..."I just paid 20 bucks for this crap?" This is like all the boring tedium that comes with MMORPG's and RTS games.  I was not only bored with the gameplay...but the graphics were just killing me.  (and yes, i get that the graphics are terrible on purpose).  Guess this is one of those games for the masses that I don't like...

You could get at least a few more million if you would release it for PS3. I'd buy it in a heart beat.

Such a fantastic game. Play it on hard survival mode, and you got yourself a horror game. Was just playing it with family over xbox live for hours tonight.

It's not for me, but people seem to love it so good on them.

ATTTTTTTTTTTTT LAAAAAAAAAASTTTT, the telling detail that explains the unholy success of the game, now so very old...XBOX users are grabbing it up, and though it's true that they have NO OTHER GAMES TO PLAY, it being an XBox after all, the REAL REASON is the hopelessly-dense mentality of the fanbase...

I don't get why you would buy this game on the 360 when you could run this game on an ancient PC and have it be better at everything.  Inventory management, mods, your own servers and all the freedom that entails.

I would buy this game is it was for the Wii U!! Im sure they can make the game more enjoyable with The Gamepad!

I gave it a chance a while back, but I just can't understand why it's so popular. Kudos to those who like it, though.

Congrats on this milestone. But This would be that the minecraft creators are indie no longer.

Well when MS drops core to chase the Wii's pot of gold, game starved 360 owners jump on core games.

ok, don't get me wrong, love Minecraft, but why is it news EVERY single time it hits a new sales milestone? It's honestly getting old seeing these articles, that and I seriously think GS keeps running out of things to talk about ha!

@tgwolf Never heard of Gears of War, Halo, Call of Duty, or Forza/Motorsports, huh? How are Xbox owners dense?

@thegedden That is the first use for the Wii U gamepad that actually makes sense.

@Megavideogamer Yes, what a shame! I'm sure they regret all those millions Minecraft has made them. Now they don't have to be on a tight budget when making their next game.

Joking aside, I know what you mean, but whether they are indie or not shouldn't mean anything. They're a company selling a product. If the product interests me I'll buy it, end of story.

@NoR4Me I cant wait for the "Minecraft sells 20 million across all platforms" news story and they can remind us again how it sold 453,000 copies on XBox on Christmas Day alone.

@The-Neon-Seal  @hippiesanta Yeah, Minecraft isn't even close to Angry Birds' selling figures. Aside from that, not every game that is successful is similar to every other game that is successful. Aside from that, I guess you could make something like Angry Birds within Minecraft.
