Minecraft Xbox 360 sells 12 million copies, dev says it would have been happy to sell 1 million

Xbox 360 Edition sales continue to soar; Mojang says it never expected this kind of success.

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition has now sold over 12 million copies, making it one of the Xbox 360's most successful titles in history. Microsoft announced the news today on the Xbox Wire, but didn't provide a list of other top-selling Xbox 360 games. Of course, the game sells for $20, so direct comparisons with major franchises like Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty are problematic.

The 12 million sales figure (up from 10 million in December) presumably includes combined digital and physical sales of the game.

In an interview with the Xbox Wire, Minecraft developer Mojang's business head Daniel Kaplan said when the studio originally thought about bringing the game to Xbox 360, they would have been happy selling only 1 million copies. "We never even dreamed of selling 12 million!" he said.

Kaplan said one of the most repeated requests he hears from Xbox 360 owners is for bigger Minecraft worlds. He explained that bigger worlds require a guarantee that each Xbox 360 has a hard drive, and of course that is not possible. However, he teased, "Luckily on Xbox One, that's not an issue."

As for when the Xbox One version of Minecraft will be released, Kaplan said, "It is coming, eventually!" Microsoft teased last week that Minecraft for Xbox One is "really close." The game is also coming to the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita.

Minecraft has transformed from a small indie game to a worldwide phenomenon in less than five years. The PC/Mac version has sold nearly 15 million copies, while the game is also available for iOS and Android devices, as well as the recently released Amazon Fire TV. A Minecraft movie from Warner Bros. is even in the works.

The best selling XBLA game and still it is so far inferior to the PC version. I played it about 50h+, to find out that there are so many things missing in the Xbox version. And don't get me startet on the buggy redstone cirquits.

I get that it has to be that much smaller, since the xbox doesn't support virtual memory, but please get at least the mechanics up to date!

although im always rooting for mojang for being such a high selling indie group, i still dont see the appeal for their flagship game. ive tried the game on a few occasions on a few different platforms but my interest didnt change. just can't wrap my head around what drives the popularity of this game to such stellar proportions. still, well done notch.

I just bought a Minecraft license tonight at the insistence of my kid.  I have to say that after watching several hours of Minecraft on Twitch lately, I still don't understand the massive appeal of this game.  Also, I hate buying games that never go on sale.

Judging by the numbers here, they made around  park figure of  500m-600m from Minecraft which is insane.

Is a kids type of game. I can't find myself playing a shitty game like that.

I was never a big lego guy, maybe thats why.

Id rather have a new true nextgen roller coaster tycoon game.

I like Terraria better.

Okay, so now they have the money to do nearly anything they want. Let's see something new from them.

That is nuts! Fair play to them.

They'll have another sale too when it comes to the PS4 :)

Waiting patiently!

Didn't the 360 version have invisible barriers at the end of the game world?

I loved the 360 version of Minecraft. I hope these developers do just as good when they're working on the other platforms as they deserve all the money they get. Can't wait to see the X1/PS4 versions.

Damn, that's a lot. I didn't even expect it to sell that many copies on the XBox 360. I was thinking 2-3 million at best. They are catching up to the PC version in sales. Amazing. I tried it, but it just wasn't for me and it's too time consuming. I wouldn't have the time to play it anyways.

@theKSMM  Generally, you derive your own enjoyment from the game.

As in, it sounds kind of weird, I know, but there's many ways to play Minecraft. It's just not good enough to watch streamers play it because they just sort of... play it their own way.

Finally, playing Minecraft without Multiplayer tends to be extremely boring for a lot of people (particularly kids) in the long run. Like MMOs, the community is what makes the game.

If you actually kind of see it from a MMO standpoint, the game's payment model is literally GuildWars 2, except people are free to mod their own content, so some servers can be unique and very different from others.

@angrycreep your name is fitting...Im not a big fan of MC either but I cant say it is a bad game.

@angrycreep  If you suck at the game, yeah it's a kids game. But some of the creations people have made are incredible. I've been on servers where there are massive cities built with bridges, sky scrapers and all sorts of intricate and colourful designs. People have dedicated thousands of hours to creating dream worlds and some of these results are actually awesome to examine.

@Barighm  In my forty two year old, video game playing man-child opinion, Terraria is the better actual game -- I don't play it, but it would have blown my mind when I was eight.  However, Minecraft is probably the greatest video game in the history of video games.

Does that make sense?

@sladakrobot Don't feel like that, it's "cool" to not want to play the popular games. Indie cred FTW! and all that :P.

I have the PC tablet and 360 version and when it comes out on the Xbox One I will most likely get that too. This is the only game my son plays and he's addicted to it.

@khuzko  He's Mojang's official press guy. He may be sleeping with Notch too. I dunno.

kyelo

@AuronAXE @angrycreep  ...definitely not a kids game(in fact I'd argue the opposite, nothing to keep most kids going). It may not have some grand story or graphics but it can be damn complicated. Merely making building blocks or items to those devil creations that are redstone circuits.

I'd say it is a complicated, computer, adult version of Lego.

@blutfahne @dribblesbarbax I don't know why you guys hate Makuch so much, but I did laugh aloud and this exchange.

PS -- Actually, if he's the the one responsible for all the articles about this game runs at that resolution and framerate, then add me to the list of haters.

kyelo

@rasterror  yeah I can understand why. If I have spare time I can easily lose days to it, once you get an idea in your head off you go. I was a massive fan of Lego as a kid so this is perfect haha

Yes I agree this game is for anyone who loves lego's. That's why lego's are very successful in the world.
