Minecraft sells 9.2 million

Mojang estimates total sales of open-world creation game hit 9.2 million across PC, Xbox 360, iOS, and Android versions.

Minecraft has struck gold, millions of times over. Developer Mojang revealed today on Twitter that total sales of the open-world creation game across all platforms are estimated to be close to 9.2 million.

Minecraft has dug out considerable success.

Creator Markus Persson said via Twitter that sales of the PC version of Minecraft alone stand at 6 million. Minecraft is available on a range of platforms outside of the computer, including iOS and Android devices, where the game has sold 700,000 copies as of January.

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition sold 400,000 copies during its first day, recouping development costs in just 60 minutes. It went on to sell 1 million copies in five days, on its way to becoming the fastest-selling Xbox Live title in history. During the week of May 14, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition tallied more unique users than Activision's shooter juggernaut Call of Duty: Black Ops on Xbox Live.

Outside of games, Minecraft has expanded in areas few other titles ever have. A two-day Minecraft convention dubbed Minecon hit Las Vegas in November, and an official Lego Minecraft set is due out this summer.

Wow!!! That's incredible. I read an interview with the developer about this game and getting it to Xbox. The world size was an issue. Luckily they had a full 512 meg of unified RAM to use and weren't restrained to the 256 of video ram found on the over priced internet ready blu ray player. Probably never see this game on the over priced internet ready blu ray player because of that RAM constraint.

"The 9.2 millions sales excluding the 50+ million pirated only on pc"

I don't understand why it's so difficult to bring the other ports up to parity with the PC version.

360 version has extremely limited world sizes

Android version has same tiny worlds, and almost none of the complex features that make the PC version fun, "Survival" mode adds almost nothing that isn't in "Creative".

Minecraft isn't a technically demanding game, it shouldn't be hard for other devices to handle something close to the PC version.

I got it for free and I stopped playing it after I got all Achievements.

Wait a second... There's going to be a Minecraft Lego set? That's brilliant! That's what normal Legos are! Nice move Lego. Making money off of the Minecraft name, without having to do any actual work.

9.2 sales for a game as basic as Minecraft.  That is just awsome.

Such a misleading article. My eyes popped open when I saw the headline thinking those were the sales for the 360. You couldn't add a few more words into the headline for the sake of relevance?

I don't know why everyone likes this crap so much, i only have seen a couple of videos but i don't even want to give it a try, looking at cheeps or building some crappy things with the most horrible graphics ever made. I just don't get it.

You people do realize that supporting this release is gonna make 1600 points the new standard for future XBLA games right? In a struggling economy such a price hike for downloadables is about the last thing we need right now. Minecraft may as well been a retail disc.

@Shtinky Also thats Mario probably the biggest selling franchise in history by Nintendo with tons of experienced talent let alone brand name.

Superman_legend
Superman_legend

@Shtinky Considering Max Payne is estimated to sell 4 million with a large industry budget and starting funds. This is a huge accomplishment from an indie developer i.e. the guy next door who worked in his basement with a couple $1 banquet meals to survive. Just kidding about the last part but it could be true.

mathias12314

@Shtinky minecraft is an indie developer and nintendo is the biggest developer. almost 10mill sold for an indie game is an achievement in its own right.

@Hamza141 I only pirated the pc version because they wouldn't accept my debit card as payment! So I bought the xbox version.

nsfn

@Hamza141 And we all know what that means! If there were no piracy Minecraft would have sold 59.2+ million. Amazing.

@Spartan_418

There is a difference between something being "technically demanding" and something taking up a lot of memory. A text document isn't very technically demanding, but there is still a limit to how large a text document you can have open with limited RAM.

Most low end computers these days have 1 - 2 gigs of RAM + some amount of graphical RAM. Most high end computers have 16+ Gb RAM, and 2+ Gb GPU memory. This is essentially an infinite amount of RAM for minecrafts purposes. These other platforms have very limited RAM (half a gig for the 360), and they are also running tons of other things in the background (and most of the time the user can't do anything about these). So you have to draw the line somewhere. I'm glad they didn't do unlimited world for the 360 version. I'm almost positive it would be impossible to do so without loading screens (Take a walk around Morrowind sometime, and see how fun it is to hit a loading wall in a open-world game).

I think they did a great job with the 360 port.

u1tradt
u1tradt

@Spartan_418 I think it's more to do with the development of the game. For example, if Minecraft's 360 version was given the green light for development around the time Minecraft PC was on 1.8 (which was released not long after the game's announcement) then the developers of the 360 version would have to start to build 1.8 from the ground up - knowing they can't release a fully up-to-date port and meet their deadline at the same time.

Given the constraints they must have had to deal with, it was probably a lot more feasible (not to mention profitable) to just release an out of date version and gradually catch up to the PC version post-release.

@Nemesis958 I think you've missed the point of Minecraft which is to define your own goals within it. The built-in achievements can be such goals, but they are tiny in comparison what you can imagine and pursue by yourself.

@CptRexKramer Minecraft looks basic on the surface but there is so much more to Minecraft than meets the eye. Wait until you discover the art of automatic farming and how different materials interact with one another such as squid ink and bone meal makes grey dye and sticks combined with wool makes frame pictures. Don't even get me started on redstone wiring.

@Master_Turismo I see so many people saying they deserve the sales but I don't understand why they "deserve" them. Please explain this to me?

@Cedar-Teeth If the game is so bad as you say then WTF are you commenting on an article proving 9.2 million times over that you are wrong? Go post on your hardcore photo realistic game on Facebook.

i know you not orlder then 14 since you lack knowlegde of nes or evn the snes. if you care but graphics you shouldnt be playing games in the first place but rather be at an art gallery. then again i am an "old-school gamer". i grew up with games like the legend of zelda, dragon warrior and mike tyson's punch out.

@TheArcade The $20 price tag is what's kept me from getting it as well. Now, if it was $15, I'd get this ASAP. In the meantime all I can do is wait for it to drop in price.

XanderZane
XanderZane

@TheArcade That's one of the reasons I haven't gotten it yet, as I don't believe it's worth $20, especially if others are getting it on PC and IOS for less. I'll probably wait for it to go on sale or just get the PC version.

Spartan_418
Spartan_418

@HyperWarlock Yeah perhaps unlimited worlds aren't reasonable for iOS and Android, but things like the mobs, crafting, cart physics, NPC villages, etc are things that phones should be able to handle.

Remember, GTA III was ported to Android/iOS and it's a technically much more complex game.

Cedar-Teeth

Courtawulf
Courtawulf

@TruthTellers  ... Is $5 really worth waiting for?

I guess it's more the concept of it being "not worth it"; but if the price is the only thing keeping you from buying it, that sort of means that it is worth it.

acewingman
acewingman

@XanderZane At this point it is too late. With over a million sales in the first week, I think the people have spoken loud and clear they have no problem paying $20.00 for a game they are going to get literally hundreds of hours of play time from. Show me any other game on XBLA that will get that kind of play time.

mathias12314
mathias12314

@Shtinky i dont know what you were thinking when you thought i was talking about cost. i was talking about about numbers. rovio has been making game since 2003. minecraft was orginally made by one person, angry birds was made by a team of 18 people.

DuaneDog
DuaneDog

@HyperWarlock But the issue is that GTA III was written with a code base that was optimized even for consoles and then was further optimized when they moved to android/iOS. Minecraft was built in java and is actually a dog on the PC... big time for the resolutions and textures. If the PC version was written in C++ or a more efficient platform for gaming then I expect there would not be the same issues of porting over to the other platforms.

Notch did a great job with his tools... but to compare a Java PC game that was written by a small indi team to Rockstars effort on GTA 3 is just not a a fair comparison.

At some point Minecraft needs to be re-written from the ground up with a more robust engine... I don't think that is really what you are seeing in these ports. They are likely translating code and then refining. Not the same.

HyperWarlock
HyperWarlock

@Spartan_418 I don't think it's that much more complex to be honest. Also GTA III was stripped down for Andriod/iOS  A lot of features were missing.
