Minecraft PC sells 8 million

Mojang's open-ended creation game reaches new sales milestone following release at retailers like Wal-Mart, Target, and Best Buy.

by

Minecraft is already a big hit, but now it's even bigger. The PC version of Mojang's open-ended creation game has now sold over 8 million units, according to the game's official website.

Creator Markus "Notch" Persson commented on the sales milestone on Twitter today, saying, "My face is making grinning sounds, so I assume it's grinning."

This latest sales milestone for Minecraft comes after the game became available via download card at major North American retailers like Best Buy, Target, and Wal-Mart.

Minecraft may have originated on the PC, but that is not the only platform the game has seen success on. The Xbox 360 version has sold over 4 million copies since launch in May, driving $80 million in revenue, with the mobile version selling 700,000 units as of January.

I've never been into Minecraft, though it seems like a great game for people into that genre. Hopefully Mojang won't be blinded by money and pull an EA on us.

such a great game, i hope to see it get more popular and even more people should try it.

the graphics might not be great but the game play is unbelievable fun and almost limitless!

Love Minecraft. It can be as casual or as hardcore as you want. I originally started off just having fun mining and making simple structures, and now I have a full-working farm with animals and fields of crops, and a factory complex nearby with a mineshaft leading to a massive cavern system underneath with underground waystations. And I only just started enchanting for the first time, so there is still sooo much more to do :)

Minecraft is game where you are free to build, explore, and play as you like. If you limit yourself on the game, then it won't be fun. Also, do not expect to build something big so quickly, it may take a few days, but each time I play, it is a refreshing experience. I already spent over 230 hours on the Xbox 360 Edition. The game is based on creativity and making simple but amazing structures, either based off imagination or pre-existing replicas of another game or real life, and it is more fun with co-op and multiplayer servers.

I am making a city on my world on the Xbox 360 version. It may feel boring sometimes, but it is slightly worth in the end. I definitely recommend you have a Youtube account to display your work after you are done.

This represents the number of casual gamers that have joined the world society of gamers...they just don't know it yet, and that's why it's Minecraft and not an RPG...

"My face is making grinning sounds, so I assume it's grinning." My face never makes a sound when I grin, so maybe you should let a doctor examine that.

Not surprised at all, good for Markus "Notch" Persson. He can now go on and create something else.

@HonorOfGod You know, I'm sure they are all looking at how they can imitate this game's success.

It's just that mindless shooters take much less effort to create.

@maitkarro  With a mindset like that, it seems like you're the one who's not free, trapped in your delusions that people who dislike this game are not this or that.

@jessie82 Let me rephrase, he can use the money to continue creating new games.

@maitkarro Short replies, your's toward gatsbythepig and mine towards you, always makes it seem like a person is assuming too much about another person, because they don't explain their opinions more fully (at least, that's my assumption). I thought you were being unfair with your assumptions and so I decided to be unfair in return, because I get annoyed by people who insult others for not liking the games that they like. There are a lot of reasonable reasons why someone wouldn't think Minecraft is fun and we don't know which one, since gatsbythepig's comment was so short. Therefore, I didn't assume that he disliked it because of a lack of creativity or any other insulting reasons. It seemed like you did that, however, and that's why I commented, thinking "Let's see how you like being treated the way you treated him". Anyway, you're free to like and assume what you want and I'm free to comment on people who insult others for not liking a game they themselves like.

@Hurvl My mindset sees that if don't have fun with Minecraft it's because you don't know what to do with it, meaning no creativity, and the game is the most open world game ever with epic freedom, you can do almost anything you can think of and if you find that boring, and rather want a game that tells you what to do where to go and so on, is stripping you from your freedom, though I still play 'em but I mostly ignore the main quest and wander off to explore the world, if nothing else is to be done then I go on with the main quest. I like many different types of games, I don't limit myself, unless it clashes with my moral code, like games as Manhunt, Postal, Saw and etc. that I dislike a lot. Anyways you're delusional not being able to think all kinds of things exist, I can assume anything I like period as you do it yourself about me.

@4-Legged-Shark  @jessie82 I read that as well, but people can only vacation for so long before their creative side kicks in and he'll be back...either that or he'll tackle some other field.

no he will be using that money to go on yet another long vacation. That is why he handed Minecraft over to Jeb, so he could just go around vacationing instead of adding dangerous water mobs.
