Minecraft has now sold 10 million copies on three different platforms

Console version of open-ended sandbox game joins PC and Pocket versions in the 10-million seller club.

by

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition has now sold 10 million copies since launch in May 2012, making the Xbox 360 the third platform on which the game has sold that many units. Minecraft for PC and Mac has sold 13 million copies, while Minecraft: Pocket Edition passed 10 million sales this year.

The Xbox 360 version of Minecraft sells for $20, meaning the title has generated $200 million since launch. This is up from 8 million units sold in August.

Creator Markus "Notch" Persson told GameSpot, "I'm having a hard time processing it."

As a "thank you" to players, Microsoft is offering 50 percent off all skin and texture packs (excluding Mashup packs) for one day only on Saturday, December 14. Minecraft is also coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4, though release dates for those platforms have not been announced.

Should I buy a Xbox 360 or ps4 to be my main video game console in march 2014?

I just don't get the appeal of this game. Tried it on PC and couldn't play it for more than 15-20 minutes. I found it boring.

Back in my day, instead of Minecraft we had lincoln logs and a bucket of epoxy to keep us entertained.

Why they haven't jumped on the Wii-U is beyond me. A touch screen for inventory would lend itself beautifully especially in creative mode. I'm guessing Lego will fill the void Notch is leaving wild open.

The skins and such are free for the pc version.  I think the charge is coming from microsoft's side of things.  They strongly discourage companies putting DLC on xbox live for free.  I remember hearing about that in relation to Valve and their left 4 dead series, as well as bungie and the halo series, the expansions and such were free for pc users, but due to microsoft, they had to charge for the live version of the additional content.

So I would make sure to do my research and see if its really minecraft's creator who is choosing to charge for this, or if its microsoft - before I go throwing blame around.

We haven't had one of these articles in a while and now get two of them at once, yippee!

THIS, this is what is killing gaming.  A fugly, boring, game with terrible AI, and no real goal.

Damn casual gamers...  stop pretending you like video games, and go back to drinking paint, like you did before the Wii came out.

Something slightly wrong with the information in this article. According to the figures on Minecraft official website, the PC version alone has sold over 12 million as of 2 months ago which was the last time i checked.

A terrible game, just amazing titles like Battlefield 4 deserves that sales.

And we still get crap updates.  I love this game but it has become so stagnant.  With the money they pull in there really is no excuse. (been waiting for an integrated mod API for how long now?)

The title is misleading, it's saying it only sold 10 million on all platforms but it did 10 million on just 360!

Edit: I re-read it and now see it's 10 million on 3 platforms for a mind boggling 30 million. Wow!

Games selling better on console then PC, why am I not surprised. By better I mean it sold much faster because PC controls suck and games don't always run well or at all on PC.

Why is Minecraft not on the Wii U/3DS/DS? This game will sell like hotcakes on Nintendo systems

I wasnt expecting another logistical article about Minecraft so soon. What with the previous one being a mere few hours ago. One could assume they could have been combined no?

@frylock1987  noitice the article said, "Microsoft is offering 50 percent off..."  I think the charges are coming from microsoft's end of things.  Not Notch.  Make sure you are putting the blame in the right place here.  The content was always freely available on the pc version.

I have heard other developers like Bungie and Valve with their left 4 dead and halo series, ran into the same issue - where microsoft basically insists that they charge whenever something is added to a game on xbox live...  So I strongly suspect that Notch isn't the one forcing charges for this stuff on players.  Just Microsoft being generally greedy, like usual.

@jessie82I see because you disagree with the way Minecraft has ended up, you're being set upon by those who still play it and enjoy it. People get a bit hurt when you "diss" their game. It's sad, I know... we can't have an opinion - like when I shared mine and Jens gave a rather stupid response over twitter.

I too, on many occasions load up Minecraft and by the time I've mined enough wood and created some tools, I am already bored. There needs to be emphasis on environmental immersion and a steady difficulty that doesn't make things to easy. Many folks complain about how they can just... dig down after getting a stone pick, to get iron and then ultimately dig North, East, South or West when near bedrock to scout Diamonds, all without interruption from any mobs.

I did have a yay moment yesterday though, when I almost had a heart attack when I destroyed a block and 2 silverfish came out :D

@jessie82 welcome to the club of people with superior intelligence.

that's exactly what happened the first time i played that game. the longest i've lasted is probably 15 minutes max.

it's kinda saddening seeing people take interest in such a stupid ass game. fair enough if you're 8 years old but to even think grown people play it and enjoy it? ridiculous.

essentially what you're doing is placing a block onto another, then at the end of the day give yourself a pat on the back. maybe take a screen shot, upload to youtube to show the world how "creative" you are. meanwhile there's artists on deviantart creating amazing pieces of work, making that blocky piece of crap look like a stick figure in comparison.

@DrKill09This game pretty much has the same idea as Lego. You build whatever you want to build and you create your own world, you do whatever you want to do, not endless repetitions of the same thing or a chosen path that you have to follow. If anything, this is what gaming should be more like.

Azugo
Azugo

@DrKill09You can't be serious.

Fugly? Graphics are not the be-all, end-all. Boring? That's obviously subjective -- millions of people disagree with you. AI? The AI that's already in-place serves its purpose, and that's all it needs to do. No "real" goal? That's the point of Minecraft,  the point of sandbox games -- you make your own goals; your own fun.

Minecraft isn't killing gaming, it's bringing new life to it. Just look at the indie scene for proof. It has exploded since Minecraft became successful. This is EXACTLY what the industry needed going back 2-3 years ago.

Hurvl

@pelvistThere was a previous article where it said it had recently sold 13 million, so apparently those figures at the website are outdated.

Clavera

@DiegoctbaI can almost promise that the longevity of Minecraft will outlast Battlefield 4. Also they are completely different games, one is a sandbox game where the other is a shooter. MC is not a terrible game, it just happens to be good according to many players, otherwise it would never have reached those sales numbers.

@Vidpci @frylock1987 Quite the contrary actually, for even though it is behind in content... the simplification of the menu system is quite convenient when you're on the couch enjoying things, secondly because of XBL, inviting gamers and joining games is easy-peasy, and not to mention the local-multiplayer that isn't found on PC. It may be behind on content, but it still is a blast to play.

I would say cutting down the same trees, and building the same crap over and over again and exploring caverns and underground caverns all the time pretty repetitive.....

@Azugo true graphics aren't the be-all, end-all. still doesn't take away the fact that it's FUGLY.

the same could be said about something like the show "hanna montana" with miley cyrus. millions of people tuned in, therefore it's good, right? quantity is obviously an indicator of how good the quality is of something.

if everyone was okay with mediocrity we wouldn't have games like GTA to be so good. could you imagine all the pedestrians just simply walking down the streets, driving their cars, not having any interaction with the player whatsoever simply because "they serve their purpose" of being pedestrians in a game? you couldn't attack them, they wouldn't say anything, they'd exist for the sake of existing. because that's what pedestrians do. fair enough if it was 2002, but it's not.

every sandbox game out there needs to have a real goal. something to look forward to otherwise you're paying for an empty game. imagine GTA without a story behind it. exactly.

it's amazing to see people agree with your flawed logic, but then again not surprising. people get offended without even taking a moment to think about things.

the only thing minecraft did was put the player at the hands of game developers. this type of game was bound to happen regardless if it was "minecraft" or "worldbuilder 2000". it's hardly innovative. once you can bring the world to life with pedestrians, working vehicles and whatnot, maybe i'll change my mind. but until then, you should all remove your heads from your asses and see things for what they actually are. peace.

Clavera
Clavera

@frylock1987 Yeah, if you build the same 16x16 sized house out of wood every time you build a house I guess it would be kinda repetetive. There is also a creative mode where you don't have to cut down anything and just build. But then again, building things freely without anyone elses goals/instructions might not be for everyone.

Azugo
Azugo

@biggestnewb@AzugoCalm down mate. We're having a civil discussion here, aren't we?

On the point of graphics: once again, they don't matter. If the game is "fugly" as you call it, it is still possible to get into the game. Moot.

I don't think anyone here is thinking that just because Minecraft is popular, it must be good. Popularity also doesn't automatically make a game bad, either. Of course, its popularity helps in making one aware to the game, but beyond that, it's up-to the individual to look into it more to decide if they like it. Minecraft happens to be a game that the masses enjoy. There's nothing wrong with that.

You brought up GTA several times, in a discussion about Minecraft - two COMPLETELY different games, so different to the point that they're not even worth comparing, yet you say I'm the one with the "flawed logic".

The AI in Minecraft doesn't NEED to be incredible. You know, mindless monsters like zombies and skeletons wouldn't be smart if they could exist in real-life. What do you expect them to do? Build defenses around themselves when they spot a player decked out in armour? No, all they need to do (and all they should do) is attack they player when he/she comes within a certain range. This is what I mean when I say the AI in Minecraft "serves its purpose".

If you really want to get into the semantics, then alright. Minecraft DOES have a "real goal", and that's to get to the 'ender world' to kill a dragon to finish the game. That's the ultimate goal, and it takes a helluva lotta work and preparation to get there, but it's not the selling point. As I said earlier; it's about having fun setting your own goals.

Looking at your last paragraph, this game clearly isn't for you. Just because you don't see the fun - or the purpose - doesn't mean it's a bad game.

@kujel@HowlPendragonThe Gamespot articles that were linked to in the previous "13 million PC sales" didn't say anything, just it being unlikely, without clarifying further, of course :(.
