Minecraft for PS4 Features Much Bigger Worlds, Uses DualShock 4 Touchpad

Mojang reveals more details about Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition along with new trailer.

The PlayStation 4 version of Minecraft will feature worlds 36 times bigger than those in the PlayStation 3 version and it will take advantage of the DualShock 4’s unique feature, Mojang’s Owen Hill announced on the PlayStation Blog.

According to Hill, the developer of Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition and the other console versions of the game, 4J Studios, will allow you to use the PS4’s controller to navigate menus and craft, and you’ll of course also be able to share and stream your adventures using the console’s social features.

As with the PS3 version of Minecraft, the PS4 version will also include “a heap” of Trophies and Sony-specific DLC that will release soon after launch. The game will support up to eight players online, four of which will be able to play on the same machine with split-screen.

If you already bought the PS3 version, you can upgrade to the PS4 version for $5, and also import your saves from PS3 to PS4, but not from PS4 to PS3 due to technical reasons.

Both the Xbox One and PS4 versions of Minecraft are set to release this August.

Gotta say, I'm excited. Never got into Minecraft but maybe this is the perfect time. The PS4's touchpad works better than I expected it would. I like using it in most games that utilize it, and it's really useful in War Thunder as a pointer.

Those giant pixels will look amazing in 1080p

The touchpad is crap as an actual touchpad - it's great as a clickable 4-way swipe-pad though, effectively adding 5 easy additional inputs. Should've put mouse support in for this game though, if anyone is still playing it.

A game that actually uses the touchpad, this is real news. I want the next news to be about sony removing the useless touchpad and lightbar from the controller.

Never play Minecraft and don't plan on doing so anytime soon.

Once again Sony uses marketing tricks to try to give an edge to the PS4 in reality the PS4 version is exactly the same as the Xbox One version only thing different is the PlayStation themes content another example Sony announces GTA5 with last-gen save transfer to current-gen like it's a PS4 exclusive feature when the Xbox One version has the same exact features

@guitarpete462 Don't bother. I don't think people even know why they bother with this software. All you do is build things that have no purpose. You cant win. There are no puzzles. There is no goal other than to annoy your friends with all the usless crap you build for no reason.

@mattcake Are you kidding me? Minecraft has sold 15,654,300 copies of the PC/Mac version alone. And you're asking if people are still playing it?

@mattcake I'm pretty sure that's not what the touchpad is for, even if it is, you'll still probably be able to use the right stick.

@mattcake I use it all the time for FFXIV. It is awesome for that game.

@gottago42  Microsoft and Sony both do that. Why would Sony pay money to help Microsoft market their games, or vise-versa? They each want you to buy their version. It's not some conspiracy. It's simply called "marketing."

xantufrog
xantufrog

@gottago42 How are these marketing "tricks" - the world IS that much bigger than the PS3 version, it DOES come with PS exclusive content, and it DOES use the touchpad. As ahpuck said, it's not their problem if MS does or does not advertise what the X1 can do, but nothing about this is "trickery" or a "lie"

ahpuck
ahpuck

@gottago42 It's not SONY's job to advertise what the xone can or can't do.

@externalpower43 @guitarpete462  Yep, a game where you have to use your imagination to create incredible items, creatures, and structures while harvesting resources and fighting monsters at night. "Useless crap" indeed...or is it possible that someone has simply crushed your childlike sense of wonder? Are the millions of gamers who enjoy playing Minecraft because they find that they can use their own imagination and the game's tools to create their own entertainment simply not having fun right?

Of course I'm sure your opinion is the only valid one. Since that's how opinions work...

@ninjakingro @blueinheaven Well this is it you see.... I get the feeling I should downgrade my high end PC and buy a really crappy monitor so 'amazing' games like this don't look like someone just shat a load of random colours on the screen in the lowest resolution imaginable. I too am capable of going completely backwards, don't underestimate me.

@ahpuck @vadagar1 Go open steam, look at how many games there are. Now go look at ANY consoles out there and look at how many games they have. There are a lot more games on steam than on any single consoles ever. Dont ever comes here saying pc have no games. I have more than 500 games on steam and its pretty common for pc gamers to have hundred of games, can you say that for console gamers ?

No problem. Glad to be part of Gamespot. (And not ON IGN)

@xantufrog @gottago42  It's not that MS doesn't advertise or that Sony tries to trick people (although, I have to say, Sony has been kind of shady in some of their wording and other things) it's that a lot of gaming sites are biased towards one console or the other. Or in some cases, appear biased for the sake of generating click bait with misleading headlines.

It seems to be becoming a common trend on gaming articles. They know the PS4 is on top right now. They now MS bashing is the hip thing to do these days so, they reflect that in their articles. Can't say I blame them. They're getting a ton of traffic off of it and, its not their fault so many people are gullible and can't think for themselves or do simple research.

look at steam.. god damn crap load of games too bad 75% of them are crap games that noone really want to buy. Look at console erm never they both have about 75% crap game in their selections

jenovaschilld

@El_Zaggy @ahpuck @vadagar1 AS a pc gamer and console gamer - steam no where near has the libraries that a console has. just a quick wiki search of xbox 360 games will show that. And while each have both their hits and misses - I think the pc can off a wider selection of choices -but - a consoles value cannot be ignored.

5 years old consoles will still be playing AAA titles just fine - maybe not as good as very high end gaming pc but take skyrim - while it does not look as good as its pc counter part - it still looks and plays very damn good.

All with out upgrading, updating, upkeeping, and optimizing you have to do with each pc game. Do not get me wrong - I would not trade Banner Saga for most any console game, but I know a game like that is few and far between. Compared to the overload of high quality games on console.

@adro191 @ahpuck @vadagar1  Gran Turismo, Forza, Resistance, Bandfuse, Some MEtal Gear Solid titles, Guitar Hero and Rockband series, GTA V as of now, destiny, NHL series, Modnation racers, RDR, MLB the SHOW, GOW, SoC, Demon's souls, Every Nintendo game ever created... and I could go on for days.

@kidflash2000 Both OK games, well not sure about Destiny, to me that game looks so far empty. I have a feeling this game will be forgotten within 5 months, just like that MMO that launched last year in April with a TV series. cant even remember its name.

A lot of the blockbusters you see now that are coming are on PC. you can mention more good games that are on PC more than you can mention good games that arent.

RevLux

@adro191 @kidflash2000  Destiny is nothing like Defiance. Besides, while Destiny has several MMO-like features it is not an MMO. From what I've played of the Alpha and Beta it is actually a pretty great game imo. I had hoped that it would release on the p.c. but I don't mind playing it on my XB1 or PS4 until it eventually makes it.
