Minecraft for PlayStation 3 debuts at the top of the charts

Latest version of Mojang's open-ended sandbox game proving series still has legs.

The PlayStation 3 version of Minecraft was the system's best-selling downloadable game during its December launch month, outpacing juggernauts like Grand Theft Auto V and Call of Duty: Ghosts, Sony announced today on the PlayStation Blog.

Specific unit sales information for the PS3 version of Minecraft is not available, but hitting the top of the chart is never a bad thing. PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita versions of Minecraft are also in development, but release dates for these iterations have not been announced yet.

Minecraft for PC has sold more than 13 million copies, while the Xbox 360 version recently surpassed 10 million in sales. Meanwhile, the Pocket Edition has also sold more than 10 million copies to date. The game is also coming to Xbox One.

Jesus, how long are they going to milk this. Yes its a pretty good game, but it really does not need to be on a system like the ps4.

You would have to pay me money to waste my time playing a game this ugly.

Terraria is so much better.

I liked Terraria more. The RPG elements are stronger and it feels like building all that stuff really means something given all the boss and monster invasions you suffer. And 2D just feels right. I've never been a very big fan of First Person.

I like Minecraft and I might consider getting it for PS4, but the lack of a modding community for consoles is keeping me away.

lol if you say minecraft sucks because you "dont get it" i feel sorry for you, it means you have 0 imagination. and to those saying the graphics suck, same to you , i can happily go back and play frogger or battletoads and enjoy myself. its in the gameplay not the graphics

I'm not a fan of minecraft, it's just not for me but it's success goes to show that graphics ain't everything and that more dev's should stop focusing so much on making games look pretty and more on the actual gameplay itself......i'm looking at you Crytek.

Suddenly its becoming increasingly cool to ridicule Minecraft, though I'm sure most of those people genuinely liked it prior to its release on other platforms.

I dont really see how this can be that great on consoles without the ability to mod anything. Its the modding components of this game that is the reason why it has litterately sold so many copies on the PC. With things like Texture Packs/Resource packs and user created shaders, compeltely turn minecraft into a compeltely different game, and a game which ACTUALLY has eye candy, not blocked graphics from the early 90s graphics. without the shaders created by the community, or the texture packs, or all the other stuff I wonder just how many people would actually be playing this on the PC. One things for sure, MC definitely revolutionized sandbox games to the forefront of gaming, and has litterately created a whole new genre of games which have spewed a whole range of games like Terraria / Starbound / Blockland / Craft The World / Signs Of Life / Starforge and many others. This genre is going to expand in to the extraudinary this year where sandbox games are going to be stunning in full game engines that aren't run off Java Scripts like No Mans Sky. Its going to be the way of the future I think for awhile where big open worlds and sandbox are going to be in almost every game now which is such a good thing for someone like me who loves the freedom.

I do wish that instead of just simply making Minecraft cross-platform on every system, that Mojang would actually start to develop a full proper game engine for it, and call it Minecraft 2 or something where is actually isn't such an eye saw to look at anymore with massive performance issues when simply running a shader addon for it. They've made so much money for it now its ridiculous to think just simply how much this game has generated.

Surely now is the time to start developing a full engine as its going on the New Gen consoles for it to actually look like it belongs on those platforms now? For anyone who doesn't know, Java is an easy to create language, that makes it easy to develop a small game on, its reasonably time friendly and easy to understand as well as cost effective, but it doesn't come without some hard-coded restrictions which really prevent the game being bigger then it can be.

and it will once again sell like crazy when it hits Xbox One, PS4, and PS Vita this spring.

I have it on every device with a screen pretty much and will probably get it again for the PS4 and Vita.

@T-Bo-_- The mods are awesome, but at the same time I like that they won't have mods like Single Player Commands, Xray, Click Teleportation and such.

I found myself too easily tempted to cheat while playing it on PC.

@HowlPendragon

I really don't get all this hate for minecraft. I've played it and it's not for me, I like my games to have specific goals and story. However I understand the appeal and I think all the success it has had is well deserved. People have been complaining for years that there are no new ideas, no inovation. Then a game like minecraft comes along that offers all that and now they bash it just cause it's successful? Cause it's not hip enough to play minecraft anymore?

For anyone wondering what the appeal of minecraft is, I think it is several things. For one it's like a digital lego playground. You can build staff, houses, monuments, whatever you want. Your imagination is the limit. People like to channel their creativity and minecraft is a great canvas. Not only that but you can play with other people, take on huge projects as a team, build elaborate constructions.

Another aspect is that of the survival horror. If you play survival mode the first thing you have to do in the game is survive the first night. It can be a terifying experience. When night falls creatures come out and you can hear their terrible cries. If you haven't dug a hole for yourself to burry into you're gonna have trouble.

Then comes the adventure, the excitement of discovery. After you've build yourself a nice home base it is time to explore the wilds, mine even more rare minerals, create tools, weapons and armor, go down dark caves with the chance to uncover monster lairs by mistake. Later in the game you can even make a portal to a hell dimention and continue your adventure there. Since the world is procedurally generated, every time you play is different. From what I hear there are evem RPG elements in the game now.

All in all minecraft is the ultimate sandbox. You spawn in a world ripe with possibilities. They way you play is up to you. Alone or in a server, as a builder or as an adventurer. It may not offer and end goal or a story but in exchange it offers unprecedented freedom.

@andfx8 It's cheap, it's a meme, and kids today need to play popular games. Ever since teens and younger started playing games online, garbage like minecraft has been top seller. Just like how it's impossible every single person that buys CoD for console actually likes FPS games, minecraft is popular because kids need popular things, there's no way that many people enjoy building stuff with blocks.

vadagar1
vadagar1

@andfx8been playing it for 2 years ... I just cant stop building stuff :P

vackillers
vackillers

@andfx8 Its hard to explain really, there isn't really a point to the game as much as there is a storyline to follow, its about building something spectacular, and living in a world with no real goals except the ones you make yourself, collecting endless amounts of resources, going on your own quest to the deepest dungeons of hell and entering the Nether. fighting endless monsters where one day can be so different from the next. I think for the most part, people just like building, and creating these megalopolises buildings and creating cities out of nothing, to proudly create something that visually you never would think possible in a land of blocks with plenty amounts of RPG elements as well.

@vackillersi find that lack of mods isn't as much a problem as the 360, PS3 and mobile versions having extremely small, limited worlds

@pug987 Exactly. I find it idiotic when people say "Can't you just play with Lego?"

No, unless you want to spend much more time building something and even more money on every block, you really can't just play with Lego.

@HowlPendragon @pug987 i dont think you can buy legos like we used to all those years ago, im pretty sure you can only buy specialized kits now like a star wars model or even minecraft kits

hadlee73

@andfx8 @vackillers There is actually an end goal/final boss, but quite often the building aspect of the game will take over and distract people from ever getting to that point.
