Minecraft Console Sales Pass PC, Series Nears 54 Million Copies Sold

Mojang releases new sales statistics for popular open-ended sandbox game.

Mojang's Patrick Geuder Saga, who heads up data analysis at the Minecraft studio, announced some new statistics about the popular sandbox game today on Twitter.

"Minecraft console editions together just passed Minecraft for PC/Mac," he said. "And across all platforms, we've sold almost 54 million copies."

On console, Minecraft is currently available on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and versions of the game are coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita later this summer. There's still no word on if Minecraft is ever going to come to Nintendo platforms like the Wii, Wii U, or 3DS.

Mojang did not share details regarding how the 54 million figure breaks down between platforms. Minecraft is available on a multitude of systems, including Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC/Mac, iOS, Android, and Raspberry Pi. The Xbox 360 version alone has sold more than 12 million copies.

Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson recently spent more than $40,000 to buy an extremely rare copy of an unreleased Aphex Twin vinyl LP. It comes during prosperous times for Mojang, as the studio made a whopping $326 million last year.

A Minecraft movie is also in the works at Warner Bros. The Lego Movie producer Roy Lee is attached to the project to produce it, though there's no other details available about the film just yet.

Console is where the money is now

When PC game like Crysis, Eldee Scroll, Battlefiled, etc sold much higher on it u knew where the biggest $ is not to mention the big budget games exclusives on console which is highly anticipated

That's like saying PC and Xbox sales have surpassed PS3 minecraft sales, can't just add several platforms together to swing stats in your favour, doesn't make sense, there's a word of this i think it's called Bulls**t

"Consoles"

Yeah which console though, couldn't care less.

I bought it on 360 to try it. It is addictive but I don't know how people can pour as much time into it as they do.

It is like I finish after an hour or two and feel like I've accomplished absolutely nothing with my time. At least in other games there is some sense of progress and accomplishment.

PC gamers don't like to buy games.

Great stats, I'm actually amazed that so many console copys have been sold. Its a pretty unique tittle on the consoles and I think that because there isn't another game on those platforms like it is one of the reasons why it sells so good. Its a fun game to pick and just screw around with, you don't need to spend hours and hours sink you life into it if you don't want to but you can if you want and you're only limited to you're own imagination.

Personally I would never have played this game without the mods though that are available on the PC which sadly the console ports just cannot get a hold of. The Sonic Ether Unbelievable Shaders mod along with the endless amounts of texture packs really really make this game and can completely turn it in to a different game entirely visually. Cant stand the default look, textures and lighting this game has.

Links below just give you a taste on how good minecraft can be visually with just a couple simple mods.

@xdude85 Considering over 80million people own a 360 and a PS3 this game could go on to break 100million sales within a few years easily. Plus the PC players and the new versions coming out. This game is like a fucking gold mine, literally.

@jerusaelem @strrckshn I don't know anyone who pirated Minecraft on the PC. I think the Minecraft buzz left the PC community a long time ago as we had the game a lot earlier and with way more features, but the console versions are only just starting to catch up with the PC version and the community response seems to reflect that.

@rolla020980 @Dannystaples14 Explaining "the point" of Minecraft makes about as much sense as attempting to explain a good joke. You either get it or you don't. It's honestly as simple as that. The only "goals" involved are ones that you bring to the table yourself. If you're not willing to invest that much thought in the process, the boredom that followed should come as no surprise.

Wouldn't expect much more from Project Spark for the very same reasons.

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

@rolla020980 Yeah I know what you mean. Project Spark you can at least give something fun to someone else, like a fun game or something. Normally all I have to offer from my efforts in Minecraft is a massive hole and a lopsided cabin.

@Kickable @dysonlu Yeah I was going to say the same thing, I don't think that's a big myth that we hear from a lot of people :).

People might say that PC is superior, for whatever reason, but anyone even slightly knowledgeable about gaming, heck even people not knowledgeable, know that consoles are the bigger market.  Certainly anyone hanging around GS comments knows it.

@pelvist

"No single console has sold more versions of Minecraft than the PC has."

That doesn't invalidate my statement.  Read it again.

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

@pelvist Yeah but he is talking about developers and consoles in general. Most games are multi platform across both consoles for THIS reason.

GTA V sold billions worth in a couple of days, Minecraft has done epically well. This is why developers put so much effort into the console versions but often just neglect the PC version.

Put it this way if Notch ever made another game do you really think he would bring it out only on PC after this?

pelvist
pelvist

@dysonlu Each platform that Minecraft has sold on is a individual platform. Out of all those platforms the game sold the most copies on PC.

"Answers why game developers care about consoles gaming and destroys the myth that PC gaming blows away console gaming in terms of market size."

It would be a little bit daft of game developers to alienate the system that sold the most copies. Therefor your statement is invalid.

deadline-zero0
deadline-zero0

@Dannystaples14 Neglect PC? So thats why DS2 and WD had PC as lead platform and why almost every single game available comes out on PC, eitehr at launch, or even latter.

Don't remember many askign for Metal Gear Rising (which i love) or Castlevania on PC, but they where ported.

brande77
brande77

@rolla020980 @4kgamer_lmxxx @dysonlu Real life doesn't work that way. If you buy Minecraft on "Computer", you can d/l and install either/both the Mac and Win versions.

You can't play an Xbox game on a Playstation and vice versa.

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

@deadline-zero0 I said "OFTEN" neglect PC. I didn't say ALWAYS neglect PC. I would hardly think RTS is neglecting PC and if Witcher 3 comes out on PC half arsed then it really would be goodnight. Good job that is never going to happen.

@dysonlu I said something about alienating. Read my comment again...

deadline-zero0
deadline-zero0

@Dannystaples14 @deadline-zero0 No often either my friend. Almost every single indie game is on PC. Vast majority of AAA titles release on PC along side consoles. More japanese dev studios are porting over to PC thanks to DD and high profit margins they contain. Ense, my examples of MGR and LOS.

dysonlu
dysonlu

@pelvist

Wow.  You said something about alienating which has nothing to do with my comment and somehow you claim it invalidates my comment.  That doesn't make any sense. I think you need to read up on simple logic.  You should stop this because you digging yourself into a hole of lunacy.

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

@deadline-zero0 Yeah I hate Indie games. It is the reason I'm going back to being exclusively console. Steam has become a mess in the last two years.

Not to mention you said Watch Dogs was developed on PC as the lead and yet it was a broken mess on launch. That is what I meant by neglected.

GTA IV took ages to come to PC and it was also a broken mess when it arrived. Lets hope V isn't the same.

Too many PC games need to be modded to make them playable. All because the developers neglected them in the first place.

pelvist
pelvist

@dysonlu Really? Then perhaps you can bury me in my hole of lunacy by elaborating on how selling the most copies of a game on the PC somehow explains why the developers care more about consoles and how it destroys any"myth" regarding market size? Or would you rather continue with pointless and juvenile remarks about what I said, and what you said?

Until you can do the prior, my original point still stands and your statement is still invalid.

rolla020980
rolla020980

@pelvist

They sold the most copies of the game on PC? I missed that stat. I read the article twice and couldn't find where it said that (not that it actually matters). It said that the game sold 54 million copies across all platforms. The major question here is how many did each platform sell, other than the 360, which we know to be over 12 million as stated in the article. The article stated that the console version (360 and PS3) has overtaken the computer platform (PC and Mac). 2 consoles have taken over 2 OS platforms. On top of that, we don't know how many copies were sold on Linux, Android, and iOS platforms. Anything more is speculation and you cannot prove it without Mojang telling us what sold.

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

@pelvist Well Watch_Dogs did before they patched it (have they patched it yet? Can't remember or are they working on it?). Unless you happened to have one of the odd graphics cards that just happened to be optimised that is.

GTA IV did simply because it played like crap.

There are plenty of games like Skyrim which have HORRIFIC user interfaces that were clearly made with consoles in mind that just don't work on PC.

Hell Dragon Age 2 was ruined on PC because the developers made it more action orientated. So basically were designing the game towards the console way of doing things. Consoles never had the original top down view in Origins, and they decided to remove it from Dragon Age 2 for everyone.

That overall just stinks of PC being secondary in those game's priorities.

pelvist
pelvist

@rolla020980 @pelvist 54 million is across all platforms not just console/PC.

PC is closing on 16 million according to the official Minecraft website and thats not including the tablet version. XBOX 360 sold the most console versions at just over 12 million.

pelvist
pelvist

@Dannystaples14 @pelvist They patched Watch_Dogs and it made performance worse for a lot of people, nevertheless you can turn the settings down and that means you dont need a mod to fix it.

Lower settings ran fine and on GTAIV and at those settings the game looked as good if not better than the console version.

Skyrim user interface works exactly like the console version and it works with a mouse and keyboard as well as a controller, hardly unplayable.

Dragon Age 2 being action orientated doesnt make it unplayable.

All the games you listed so far are all perfectly playable without mods fixing them and although they could be considered sloppy ports (I would agree that more could have been done to take advantage of the PC platform) they are still better than the console versions.

lonesamurai1
lonesamurai1

@Dannystaples14  I know Skyrim had a larger user base on PC than it did on console, besides everything you mentioned was all last gen since the beginning of 2013 all that has changed and devs see the potential on PC especially Japanese devs.

And Watch Dogs from what I hear was a complete letdown on any platform and all platforms need patching but mine played fine at 2560x1440.

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

@pelvist Yeah you know how I get the game to run on my console? I push a button and put the disk in the tray. That is all I care about, and it is why it is very unlikely I will ever go exclusively PC. I just want to play games in the most pain free way possible.

I don't care about graphics overall. I'd be a PC gamer if I did care.

Skyrim's interface was terrible on every version. Just endlessly scrolling through lists of items. On the PC version I actually felt jealous of them being able to change the interface. The interface might not have made it unplayable but it did make me hate the game more.

Dragon Age 2 is regarded the worst game by most PC gamers. They HATE that game. I've even heard people dubeous about inquisition because of how bad 2 was. Not unplayable but still not worth playing in most people's opinion.

I don't want to play sloppy ports I want to play good games. If they are sloppy ports they aren't worth my time. No matter what the platform.

I have more fun overall on my console than I've ever had on my PC. PC looks better and the games are cheaper but that doesn't make the games more enjoyable. Not if I have to put up with potential "sloppy ports" at the same time.

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

@lonesamurai1 User base maybe but that is only because Skyrim was boring as all hell. That game NEEDED mods to be fun in the first place. Man I was so disappointed in that game! They put so much emphasis on how big the world was yet they didn't have enough time to fill the world with anything worth while.

All last gen? There is nothing out worth talking about on current gen that is on PC at the moment. Watch_Dogs was broken for most people and it was also boring anyway. Was bad enough on console yet the PC fans got a double serving of sh*t.

I've said it for years, PC is good for graphics junkies and the fact the prices are lower for games (and probably for the platform overall in the long run for competent buyers) but those benefits are generally overshadowed by how much crap you have to wade through whenever a game is released.

I often feel like it is a gamble whenever I buy a PC game. Where it is literally this game is either going to work or it isn't, and if it doesn't I really hope it is a common fault because otherwise there is a good chance I will never get to play the game.

I just want to sit down and play a game, not have to mess around with the settings so the game actually runs properly without jumping every three seconds or whatever else can go wrong.

lonesamurai1
lonesamurai1

@Dannystaples14  I must be really blessed because I just don't have the problems with games that other people claiming to be PC Gamers say that they've had, all of my game including Watch Dogs ran buttery smooth at 2K and in 4K.

Graphics are important for me though because it further immerses me in the game and I revel in certain games level of beauty, I take a lot of screenshots of certain games to because they looks like art.

pelvist
pelvist

@Dannystaples14 You forgot about when the disc is scratched or you cant find it and the exceedingly slow updates, install times and download rates you have to put up with. You know what I do to play Watch_Dogs on PC? Double click an icon on my desktop.

You said you where already a PC gamer but are "going back to consoles" now youre saying "id be a PC gamer if i did care" - so which is it?

Having the option of a better UI in Skyrim isnt the same as needing a mod in order to play the game.

Dragon Age 2 was a bad game on all platforms, unplayable on none.

Sloppy ports are still better than the console offering, mods can make them even better still. They are an option for PC gamers, I fail to see how having options is a bad thing.

Its either a sloppy port every now and then thats still better than the console version or have no choice but to accept what you are given and make do with the weaker version of multi plats all the time. If you have more fun playing the weaker version then good for you.

billzihang
billzihang

@Dannystaples14 PC gamers hated Dragon Age 2 because that's when it become a console game; i.e a game that can be played by stupid people.

Now that's not to say all console gamers are stupid - they certainly aren't - but it is certainly true that consoles are far more stupid person friendly.
