Minecraft coming to PlayStation 4

[UPDATE] Mojang's open-ended sandbox game will be available on Sony's next-generation console at launch; also coming to PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.

[UPDATE] Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson wrote on Twitter after the announcement that Minecraft is not only coming to PlayStation 4, but also PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.

The original story is below.

Minecraft won't be a Microsoft-exclusive on consoles for much longer.

Today during Sony's Gamescom media briefing, the company announced that Mojang's open-ended sandbox game will be available on the PlayStation 4 at launch.

Minecraft for Xbox 360 has sold 8 million units. The game is also coming to Xbox One.

so much for "at launch".... I've never played this game, but considering how many people are going nuts for it, I wanna try it and see for myself

Believe it or not this is why some people like 360's over PS3. As they love this game. I've never played it but seen the mobile version which does not look much different than the console version. It has a massive fan base. So MS is losing more exclusivity going forward.

Imagine if it had next-gen graphics? That would be awesome

you know i think this game will fit the Vita so well

on a side note i wonder if the PS4 version will be the same as the XB1 version and will the PS3 version be in at least the same state as the 360 version is now

i hope so

This is stupid.  IT'S ONLY 800K IN SIZE !!!  What the hell prevented a PS3 version for the past year?!?!  /doublefacepalm

Why was this information only revealed now? Minecraft seemed to be in Microsoft's pockets for so long

Yes! Another reason to add to why it's good to have a Vita, to which there hasn't been all that much. The tablet and phone version of minecraft are terrible. Finally I will be able to play minecraft on the go!

It's just my personal opinion but I think the unmodded "vanilla" MineCraft is extremely boring as there's very little content and pretty much nothing to do.

The few times I start up this game on PC these days I can't imagine doing so without at least the "Feed the Beast" mod pack and a appropriate 64x64 or 128x128 "Sphax" texture pack replacement.

I think it's good that they bring this sandbox "game" to as many platforms as possible and congratulate them to their success though.

Awsome... just makes sense and its good and deserves to be on the sony platform too, not just exclusive to xbox. Though I do hope that you guys who play MC on the consoles will get the access to the absolutely incredible mods and texture packs that are out there for the PC version, you wouldn't believe how many are out there for MC and just how much of a big impact (in a good way) these mods have in the actual game it self. SEUS Unbelievable Shaders are simply stunning!! for example.

Another good reason to maybe think about getting a Vita.

Pretty cool, I'm excited. But what truthfully took so long? Are they graphics so intense that  they needed to wait until the PS4 comes out?

If you guys haven't seen the hilarious Xbox support tweet about this still being exclusive to Xbox One, you need to see it. Hilarious.

Who would want to play minecraft without mods?

davecarno

@MajinSquall Ideal for Vita loads play this on mobiles. So the Vita could essentially have a XBOX 360 version much alongside what the PS3 version will be like. Vita is going to become a very interesting option in the next year.

@VarietyMage Exactly as Landau said, Mojang had an exclusivity contract with MS that expired recently (June or July, I think), thus preventing the game from coming to any other console before then.

@bloody-hell They do add some good things to vanilla MC that make it more interesting by itself, even if for just a short while. Like when they just added horses with 1.6. With the help of the Mo Creatures mod creator, they finally brought something I've been wanting in the game since I first got it. They took horses and greatly improved on how they work in the vanilla game. But still, each update can only add so much. I just recently got into Forge and even run my server with it now. Only thing that sucks is waiting for mod creators to update their mods to the latest version. So once 1.7 comes out, I have to make the decision to either wipe anything out of my game that was added by a Forge mod, or wait until all of the mods are updated. It's for that reason I've kind of avoided adding any mods to my server that actually add new blocks (besides a chunk loader which is only used when needed).

@Codester_41 obviously not as they are releasing it on ps3 and vita as well not just ps4 and ps3 can handle better graphics then the Xbox 360 so obviously it has nothing to do with graphics it has to do with Microsoft lining the pockets of the Minecraft devs

jtg1993007

@Codester_41 It was a Microsoft exclusive before, so Sony wasn't allowed to have it until now

Heshertonfist

@blaqphantom It's basically digital Legos. Not the Sims, not a map creator, well, maybe a little and as far as I know, no objectives other than just building stuff.

Do you mean the tweet from Xbox support that said "The Xbox one edtion of Minecraft is exclusive to Xbox one"

@Kooken58 why would someone game for mods? It's like dressing yourself as a unicorn before going to work because you are bored to go to work as a human.

@Kooken58 About eight million people.

Judging from how well the 360 version of Minecraft sold.

Hurvl

@Kooken58 8 million people, apparently, but that only shows that 8 million people are ignorant.

LandauTST

@Heshertonfist @blaqphantom General survival, gathering materials, finding diamond, mine obsidian to make a portal to the Nether, finding a Nether fortress, fight blaze mobs for blaze rods, crafting eyes of ender using blaze powder from the rods, finding a strong hold, activate portal to the end, fight the ender dragon...There are most definitely objectives aside from just building stuff. Mods, servers, plugins, texture packs, etc all enhance the game to endless possibilities, but just about all of those can only be done on PC.

Kooken58
Kooken58

@xolivierx @Kooken58 Mods for minecraft go far beyond with what your character looks like....Look up Mod packs like Feed the Beast and Tekkit and countless others. Im sure if you Watch the Yogscast you would see the hundreds of great things players make for minecraft.

All im trying to understand is why would somebody limit themselves to playing it on xbox when they could easily do it on PC. The game can easily run even on the slowest of machines.

randomkidlol
randomkidlol

@xolivierx @Kooken58 why would someone want to limit the options of what you can do? its like dropping out of school and then complaining about how you cant get a good job.

MajinSquall
MajinSquall

@Hurvl @Kooken58 or that 8 million people may not have a PC to play it on, or may not like playing it on PC

(or like me have it on the PC and the 360 and android and will be getting it on PS4,PS3  and PSVita, why because i like it)

joke_man
joke_man

@Hurvl @Kooken58

I've seen people blanketly generalize, but doing so to call 8 million people ignorant seems kind of...Well, I don't know, ignorant...

Hurvl
Hurvl

@joke_man @Hurvl @Kooken58 All of my comments have been more or less jokingly meant, but its more fun not to point that out, to see whether people believe they're genuine or not. I know many people don't see mods as uber important or just ignores them, because they prefer to game on a console.

My opinion isn't/shouldn't be everyone's opinion (I actually hate when people try to claim that), but from where I'm standing a game like Minecraft (or any other mod friendly game) isn't quite as fun without mods, so I simply/arrogantly pointed that out.

joke_man
joke_man

@Hurvl @joke_man @Kooken58

Firstly, that's your opinion.  No need to take your opinion and trash everyone that bases their purchase on different factors--which is exactly what you did.

Secondly, even if you prefer mods, there is no denying the Xbox 360 version has its own perks that might appeal to Xbox others .  Like the ability to play and play much more easily with Live friends (i.e. no servers; more accessible community; etc.).  Using a gamepad...easier interface for building (automatic recipes); etc...

Hurvl
Hurvl

@joke_man @Hurvl @Kooken58 What can I say, I love mods. Many games aren't nearly as fun without them and some are barely worth playing without them. They don't know what they're missing, playing without mods. If they *do* know what they're missing, but still bought the mod-less version, that just seems stupid.
