Minecraft beta cracks 4 million

Mojang's world builder converts one-quarter of its registered users into paid miners, testing phase ends next week.

Minecraft has long been a success story for indie games. Even though the game is still officially in beta, it recently crossed another sales milestone that many bigger titles would be happy to reach.

Minecraft's paying denizens number 4 million.

Mojang lead Marcus "Notch" Persson, shared via Twitter yesterday that the block-based adventure game has sold more than 4 million copies. This achievement hits just 10 months after the game crossed the 1 million sold mark in January.

Over 16 million people have registered Minecraft accounts. Minecraft can be played for free, but premium customers gain access to many more features of the game, including the Survival mode, crafting, mobs, and the inventory.

The first Minecraft-centric convention, called MineCon, will take place next week, and along with it will come the long-awaited release of Minecraft 1.0. This will bring the game out of beta, but Notch promises regular updates will continue following the game's official launch. The convention will also serve as a coming-out for the Xbox 360 version of the game, which is due for release in early 2012.

An open-ended game, Minecraft allows players to explore vast 3D environments rendered with a blocky aesthetic, harvesting resources to craft into various tools and materials as they go. In addition to reshaping the world to their whim, players must build their own shelters so as not to fall prey to wandering monsters at night.

this games so popular its pretty crazy. 4 million and its only beta... one thing though I wish was the crafting system was easier. Like an interface menu of items u need to make stuff... instead of looking it up on the internet to do stuff

Haven't played in a few weeks leading up to the release because they have multiple betas within betas and you can't keep a server updated. Once it goes live tho, gonna get that castle finished!

Not interested at all in minecraft, I wonder how many of those 4 million copies are actually being played on a regular basis.

Not begging, just wondering, why do most of the indie only go to 360?

Anyway i got persuaded to buy the game and well got addicted.. there is just so much fun to be had when playing with other people. Well worth the money they where asking for it.. it seems very basic at first but there is so much too it..

@nernberg Only way it'd be unappealing to you would be if you had a serious lack of imagination, that's what makes this game so great. It's not another one of those many games that hold your hand the whole way through and tell you exactly what to do.

So how will the RPG they've made it into work and will THAT full version be what is made available on 360?

I can't believe something this simple would be such a huge hit. Way to go, makers on Minecraft!

I never played this game but looking at videos, the game just looks unnapealing to me. I don't get why it is so popular.

@maitkarro I believe the current versioning numbers apply to the Beta version. Once the game is out of Beta and in full release the old version numbers don't really apply.

@BobTrivioni Who (except yourself) cares about the server, you can make your own one and invite your friends in it, if you set the online-mode false even your friends who don't have a premium account can play in the server.

Hopefully there will be no rollbacks after release on Minecraft servers, and hopefully they don't pull a Microsoft move and add a ton of expansions and make you pay for them considering the games simplicity.

FIRST. This is kinda nice, the game is coming out full. Don't really know what else to say... well, that's all I got for now.
