Miis kicking it in FIFA 08

Wii version of EA's soccer franchise to feature user-created Miis in multiplayer mode alongside Ronaldinho.

by

Buried near the bottom and mentioned in an off-the-cuff manner, Fortune editor Jeffrey O'Brien let slip news last month that Miis would be making an appearance in EA's upcoming FIFA Soccer 08. As the news was far from common knowledge, EA was cagey with the information, stating only that an announcement concerning FIFA 08's Wii feature set would be forthcoming in mid-June.

It's Ronaldinho!

Sure enough, EA today passed along word that Miis will indeed be featured in FIFA Soccer 08 for the Wii. Taking cover-athlete integration to the logical next step, EA has revealed that a customized Mii version of Brazilian soccer phenom Ronaldinho will appear in the game. Also, FIFA Soccer 08 on the Wii will feature motion-sensing controls for passing, shooting, and tricks. The new Wii Remote controls will be taught over the course of 30 tutorial missions.

More than just window dressing, the cover athlete will host a Wii-exclusive multiplayer game mode called "Footii Party with Ronaldinho." Players can take on the Barcelona midfielder with their own created Miis in a series of minigames, with Ronaldinho's Mii eventually being unlockable. Of the inclusion in the game, Ronaldinho commented, "My character looks like he enjoys playing football and shares my passion for the game. This is important to me."

FIFA Soccer 08 is slated to ship this fall for the Wii, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, PC, and mobile platforms, but it has not yet been rated or priced. For more on FIFA 08 for the Wii, check out our recent Q&A or head over to the game's gamespace.

I would like to play the game, Fifa 08, if only the Wii consoles where readily available to be purchased in a store or online. Here we are, what almost 7 months later and there is still no way to get a Wii console. Damn Nintendo for miscalculating their production sales and figures. Where the heck are all the consoles?

I don't like the idea, but I guess I still should check it out since the FIFA series was getting repetitive in a way.

@Crew_SK I think it's kavadias thats been playing lil to much with his wii. To want to see every game have mii really. How is mii important? Here is the end of result of there lil mii experiment. While some of you may think it's cool other ppl already see them as ordinary models playing a game they wanted to play soccer. Later in the year it's gonna be about whoa we don't give a livin flip about Mii's anymore the game better be good thats about it. While some of the ppl are sucked into the mii thing, later on they gonna grow up to find out it's not a big deal anymore. Probably become a useless feature without any special thing to come by when every sport, and every game comes with a "Mii mode". Wii, or any system is supposed to be fun. But they never labeled the fact that Mii was so supposed to be the only fun in games.

kavadias really makes a point. sure I enjoy playing games with high quality graphics and all but Wii is nothing about that. A cartoonish approach is suggestive to users of all ages and makes the game seem more simple. How can you even assume that you want realism from a soccer game if you intend to play it with a gamepad. You want realism.. stop laying around as a couch potato, get out and play some footbal. Wii is about fun not about polygons and textures.. PS3 fanboys should have got that already.

this is the ugliest game I have seen from the wii yet.

The way I understand it's only in multiplayer, at least this article only mentions usercreated mii's in minigames, and besides that only mentions the Ronaldinho mii. Don't see how that's a problem. @ Pablo620, a lot of games have that many tutorials hidden away in the options menu you almost never access. The tutorials are there for the 0.1% of the world population who can't just pick up the controller and go with it.

30 TUTORIALS. I thought the Wii was about fun accessible gaming for everyone. Not even i want to sit through 30 tutorials. Thats brutal. ill pass on this one and spend my $60 on the greatest soccer game ever Winning Eleven for PS3. Thats going to be sweet

I love Mii's. I wish they were in every Wii game. My god the majority of you have an awful lot of rage on this matter... I think you are playing games to much!

If this feature was only for multiplayer, I would buy it. If it were for the entire game, no way. I think I'd just get a PS3 and play it on that.

Wii games, are like parodies of real games.

Ok...this is taking the Mii thing too far now. Fifa is supposed to be a respected, "realistic" soccer simulator. Now, it is becoming a caricature of itself on Wii. Miis are fine in WiiSports, but how would you feel about the next Madden game having Miis? I know this is only for multiplayer mode, but still...

LOL, how much farther can they take the Mii gimmick? It got some laughs when Wii first came out, but there's not really anything you can do with them that you can't do better with a face-mapped avitar like Eyetoy Cameos.

Strikers has proven that soccer games on the Wii won't have control issues, first Madden and now FIFA Soccer will benefit from the Wii's features.

Not my cup of tea. It's trully hard to make a soccer game wii based. Maybe it will come with an attachment that attaches to your leg ^_^

30 tutorials? That's insane. I thought Wii games were supposed to be simpler.

EA should just come out with a Wii sports package with a handful a major sports that the Mii characters can play.

That's a good idea, I don't play many sports games though, especially not soccer/football (depending on where you live ;D) games.

30 tutorials!? that doesnt seem to be simple as the Wii makes everything, I hope the controller will be well adapted at least...

Obviously this game is being catered to the European and South American markets. Soccer is not popular in the USA and EA has this covered with Madden 2008. From what I heard Madden is a very innovative game with online gaming without a friends code. However, lets hope that this can also be a great soccer game as well(crosses fingers)

If they make the next NHL game using Mii's... I'm sold!

It seem only the face is from Miis, the body looks totally different.

This is why I've said that the Wii won't be as good as the other consoles, ITS A SPORTS SIM, why are they ruining it by doing this, just so some idiots who don't play or even like sports will be willing to try it out... lame.

Spongetron_X

I like it, as long as we aren't required to play as Miis. I like Miis but don't want every game of mine taken over by them.

I guess this means that the rumor that 3rd parties weren't allowed to use the Mii feature this year was false.

It at least it adds something new to the FIFA franchise, which is something that EA needs to do with all their repetitive sports games.

While I think it's a brilliant idea, funkyhamster makes a poor point. Just because the game may appeal to my mother, doesn't make it a game I'll enjoy, and that's all I care about.

It is good to hear that some developers are taking advantage of more of the Wii's features. Hopefully more developers will integrate these types of features in the future.

I think this sounds great. As long as the playability is there - it could be a winner.
