Midway Games Sold to... Midway

GT Interactive and Midway carve up distribution rights.

Comments

In what seemed to amount to Midway Games paying for the right to distribute its own products, GT Interactive announced today that it had sold back to Midway Games "the rights to market, distribute, and sell future Midway Games PC products in North America and Japan." GT retains the console and PC rights to Midway Games releases outside North America and Japan. (Back in 1995, Midway had sold GT distribution rights to its PC titles in order to focus on console and arcade products. Today's news means Midway gets those distribution rights back.)

Ron Chaimowitz, president and chief executive officer for GT Interactive, had this to say about the reasoning behind the deal: "Domestically marketing Midway PC titles only without the benefit of cross-marketing with consoles was suboptimal for both Midway and GT; however, marketing both platforms together overseas is economic, synergistic, and mutually beneficial to both companies."
