Midway bets on This Is Vegas

Stranglehold developer announces new title, which will allow "players to live out their wildest Vegas fantasies."

Once a remote desert stopover, Las Vegas has become a world-famous destination thanks to its legal gambling, drive-thru Elvis weddings, and the original CSI television series. Today, the Nevada metropolis will also be the site of the first day of this year's D.I.C.E. Summit, where game development's elite meet up for the Annual Interactive Achievement Awards.

Now, those people disinclined to pay the world's favourite gambling destination a real visit, can run amok in a virtual Sin City courtesy of Midway's This is Vegas. Currently in development for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC at internal studio Surreal Software (The Suffering: Ties that Bind), the game is expected to hit store shelves toward the end of 2008.

This is Vegas' story has gamers standing up to a powerful businessman who is determined to turn Las Vegas into a family-friendly tourist trap. Described as "an open-world, lifestyle action experience," This is Vegas will incorporate fighting, driving, partying, and--of course--gambling elements as players struggle to "put the Sin back in Sin City."

I Have High Hopes for this game, but the trailer looks poor, still early days tho

This has got to be the most backwards idea for a game I've ever heard. "yeah, stand up to those evil people that want more family attractions!! let's fight them with legalized prostitution and wayne newton!!" what a bunch of crap.

Sounds odd, But it wont work unless its M. Gamble fight, But vegas. And what the game is trying to show. Sex is a must. I know, sounds racy and stupid, but true.

I have to agree with thescorpion1983, this game is putting in too many different elements from totally different genres into one game that it might just alienate players who like to play gambling games but don't really like GTA style games and then there are the players who like GTA style games but end up calling this game too weak because it might not have an 'as strong as' GTA feel to it, instead it may feel like a hand me down feature of what GTA is. But I guess this may be a good place for them to shine. seeing as GTA IV will probably be the better of the two in terms of 'open world' lifestyle action gameplay, This Is Vegas may just be a good game if it can manage to merge the two areas of gambling and 'open world' gameplay to make it its own unique game. Here's me wishing This Is Vegas will have a good career ahead of it.

Wicked, looks like a great time-spender, in a good way.

If nothing else, Midway and Surreal do deserve -some- kudos for trying something a little different with the genre. For the curious, I recommend perusing IGN's articles on the subject. Note that you'll be interacting with a quartet of distinct factions over the course of the storyline; it will be interesting to see if Surreal took any pointers from Mercenaries (which, in turn, learned from the old-school GTAs) about the interplay among same.

What they are promising for this type of game never end up right. They try to mix too many different stuff into one game and it ends up not having a category. People into gambling will find the rest too weird, people who like GTA will complain that its not as good as gta etc..this game might try to be like too many genres. Gambling, Las Vegas, Women, drinking, party...sounds more to me like a vacation then a videogame.

i guess vegas games are a new genre within themselves (waiting to be overdone, mind you.). i can't wait until they make a game where if you go into virtual debt, actual bookies show up at your door to break your legs.

Personally... The idea sounds amazing...And a cool fresh concept for a game. But mid way always promises and when it comes to delivery they usually end up real short on what we all expected.... Maybe they are turniong it around with this one....But after gta 4 and saints row 2 comes out...where does that leave this one? Most probably like their other game (05 edition) NARC. over looked.....

It's like... you can go to Vegas and be a total screw-up without consequences I guess.

I personally would rather shoot/grenade/bomb my way through vegas In Rainbow six, than virtually drink, gamble, and get syphilis in this game.

I'm not getting my hopes up... Honestly, the only game worth playing from Midway is Unreal Tournament III and maybe, just maybe, Stranglehold. With the Mortal Kombat rips, Hour of Victory, Gauntlet Seven Sorrows, Spy Hunter, and NARC... I'm honestly surprised Midway is still up and churning out the mediocre games.

there are alot of gaming ideas that sound interesting and cool but not implemented well will this be a similar case or not. I hope its not the same as with most of those ideas.

Mmmm I wonder if that means that I can wake up with myself handcuffed to a clown, holding a bowl of jello with a wedding ring on my hand just like my last trip to Vegas. I've said too much and besides, that clown never calls.

Midway execs MUST be smoking something... this is far and away the most inane idea I've ever heard of Put the sin back huh? yea.. way to glamorize degenerate activities all for a little media attention and maybe sell more than 100k copies of something... just like adding Gangsta crap to RUSH.... Midway is currently helmed by window lickers
