Microsoft's Phil Spencer on competition with Sony: "I love it"

Corporate vice president says Xbox One and PlayStation 4 launching in the same month is "going to be exciting."

The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will go head-to-head in November when both consoles launch worldwide. Microsoft Studios corporate vice president Phil Spencer is energized by the competition, saying it is good for the industry and for gamers overall.

"I love it," Spencer told The Guardian in a new interview from Gamescom in Cologne, Germany.

"If you think back a couple of years, there were questions about whether big shows like this were meaningful and about where the business was going. I think about E3 this year as one of the most exciting I've been to, and 300,000 people will come through here! It's good for the industry that there's such high awareness," he added. "And competition is good for gamers. Head to head in the same month? It's going to be exciting."

On the other side of the fence, Sony UK managing director Fergal Gara addressed the competition with Microsoft by saying "we're all competitive animals" and "it's nice to know you're ahead."

During Sony's Gamescom briefing on Tuesday, executive Andrew House jabbed Microsoft for its policy reversals. Spencer responded by saying, "Other people will do and say what they're going to say. Fine."

Sony recently nailed down a November 15 release date for the PS4 in North America, while Microsoft has committed to releasing the Xbox One sometime in November. The PS4 will sell for $400, while the Xbox One will debut at $500.

Competition is always good for the marketplace and the consumer

"I love it" - does that mean there hasn't been competition with Sony the past 2 generations?

The main difference this time is what seems like a fairly overall negativity when it comes to Xbox One that wasn't there with the 360.

The biggest difference of all is sony has already confirmed the PS4 will be sold at a loss for a couple of years. While the Xbox One will be making profit from day one.Looks like another repeat of this gen. While the PS3 lost over 5 billion the Xbox 360 has been making profit since september 2007.Yea the PS4 could be sonys last console you just cant keep losing money for 8 years straight on a product.Just look at the PS4 pathetic launch line up of 15 games. Then you have the Xbox One 23 launch title with some of the best games i have ever seen.Glad i got my X1 pre ordered yesterday at walmart

And Major Nelson must love the competition for "who can spout the most idiotic MS propaganda?"  That's a game that microsoft employs play, right?  Must be.   Those jokers.

What do you expect him to say?  "Oh *expletive* we blew it!"?!?

That $100 price difference is going to be a REALLY big deal.....price difference is why I got a 360 over a PS3 and it's why I'll get a PS4 over an XBone (that, any I no longer trust MSFT decision-making)

@CaptWaffle yea it definitely is a big deal not to mention Microsoft is still shoving that worthless camera down gamers throats

I wonder if McDonald's would say "I'm loving it!" about their competition with Burger King.

I imagine Spencer saying "I love it" while grinding his teeth and clenching his ass hard enough to squeeze water out of a stone.

@Fursnake I imagine him smiling arrogantly thinking "Hah, those fools at Sony don't know who they're up against! We might be called Micro-soft, but we'll hit them hard".

Hate game companies executives. Nintendo, MS, Sony... All salt from the same bag.

I do like games... Maybe I'm in the wrong article.

I can almost hear him sing, "...I don't care, I love it..."

It's hilarious that NO ONE is even mentioning the Wii-U. Is it really that bad?

@Tony no, any game exclusive to the console regardless of developer is an exclusive. (Halo, Syphon Filter, Dead Rising 3 and Uncharted)

@Kevin exactly. @Matej touchpad? seriously? You do know that the touchpad has to be programmed for by developers. And like the PS Vita's rear touchpad, those developers won't be many.

And MS, The Enormous Assholes Press Conference was unprofessional and the presentation was pathetic.. Nice to see you teaming up with Enormous Assholes for more complete failures.

I would be pretty awesome if MS just go all balls on this console wars and launch same day as Sony in all markets, and they should say it and embrace the fanboy wars in their marketing

"November 15 Xbox One Vs That loser console, Are you goner let then win huh!! You decide the winner, buy The One, America fuck yeah" minus the F word of cause

TMBreezy

@steelmouth all the sony kids will show up at launch with bats n shit. MS will be there just chillin

@strikeback1247 @steelmouth In competition your opponents or competitor is always the loser regardless of the actual results and if you think otherwise then you have no business competing

Killzone is the same as Halo only in that they are both FPS, please dont be so ignorant, i even know what is Halo and i dont want X360 only for that game. Its not worth it.

TMBreezy

@Matej Jurič You can't even compare Halo to Killzone, Halo is one of the BIGGEST Franchises other than COD thats exclusive to Xbox. I don't think you understand how big that game really is...
