Microsoft will soon penalize Xbox One players for bad behavior

Gamers who have a "negative impact" on Xbox Live community overall will soon be handed penalties like reduced matchmaking pairings and might even have access to Twitch revoked.

In a blog post on the Xbox Wire today, Microsoft program manager Michael Dunn announced that notifications for the Xbox One Reputation system--originally outlined last summer--will begin to show up this month.

Players can fall into three categories of reputation score: "Green = Good Player," "Yellow = Needs Work," and "Red = Avoid Me." When you look at someone's Gamercard, you'll be able to see their reputation at a quick glance. The longer you play online without being reported as "abusive" by other players, the better your reputation score will be.

This is decided by a Microsoft algorithm that monitors disruptive behavior. Dunn said the "vast majority" of players never receive any feedback from other players and will maintain their "Good Player" status without issue. Over time, Microsoft will introduce rewards for good behavior on Xbox Live, but there was nothing to share on this front today.

For "Needs Work" players, you'll begin to receive reputation warnings this month. The purpose of these warnings, Dunn said, is to remind players about the effect their behavior has on the community and to encourage them to have "more positive interactions."

Finally, Microsoft is also now beginning to roll out penalties for "Avoid Me" players. If you do not heed warnings and continue to have a "negative impact" on other players and the Xbox Live platform itself, you're going to get in trouble. "Avoid Me" players will have "reduced matchmaking pairings" and can even have their access to Twitch broadcasting revoked.

"Remember, we designed the algorithm so it won’t penalize you for bad reports over a few weeks of play," Dunn said. "The system also adjusts for false reports from people that might intentionally report someone of greater skill or for other griefing purposes."

Microsoft's overarching ambition for its Xbox One reputation system is to "create the best gaming community online" and match players with other gamers that you'll enjoy.

I'm cautiously optimistic. My oldest son would love to play multiplayer xbox live games but I don't let him because the channels hum non-stop profanities 24/7/365. The ETs monitoring xbox live truly believe humans cannot construct any sentence without at least 2 out of every 3 words being a profanity.

Nifty, but how will MS keep this system from abusing non-offensive players?

Really....This is a bad thing?? It's about time. All you little bastards running your jibs with no consequence? And don't try to make it a console thing, I have them ALL.

Saying crap on a console or online you wouldn't dare to say in public and if you did, you'd get smacked in the mouth.

This is a good thing. Hopefully Sony will do something similar.

Don't like it? Go start your own network.

When I first saw the title of this article I thought for a second that it said "Microsoft will spoon Xbox One players for bad behavior" lol! There's my dyslexia out and about.

Xbox One players have been penalized enough. They own an Xbox One.

why is this a bad thing?  Oh wait, Consequences!

That is not a real word in the gaming community?  oh it is?

But only in those RPGs that have good/evil chose right?  crap OK but how the hell can I act like a jerk and people reward me for it.

Sony will welcome you jerk players with open arms.

Can't see this changing anything, but how about Twitch at 1080p instead  of 720p, losing Twitch is not any sort of punishment at all.

Although this is another aspect of Microsoft controlling their players, I have to agree to this decision, especially if they manage to implement it well. Nobody wants to play with undesirable people. Take this comment section for instance. If we could negatively rate an asshole and put his/her comment as spam then we don't have to read that person's crap everytime they write something.

To all the people saying they aren't buying an Xbox One because they don't like MS telling them how to behave, you're probably the type we don't want on Xbox Live anyway so, thanks! Apparently MS can do no right. No matter what they do, it gets spun in the worst light possible by fanboys and tinfoil hat wearers.

This is a +++. I mute everyone not on my friends list but, it would be nice to be able to leave voice on for everyone in a multiplayer game so we could coordinate better without having to hear people swearing and screaming or telling you how bad you suck. I just hope they don't start giving bad rep for lousy player skills or I could be in trouble :P

This is cool.  As much as I love videogames, the most active part of the community is made up of young men who curse and swear casually and think it's amusing to become sexist, racist, homophobic trolls the moment they're granted a sliver of anonymity.

A self-policing community could go a long way to restoring civility to online gaming.

Not sure if this system is going to work. I don't use an XBox, so it won't matter to me here. However, those snot-nosed brats need to be dealt with somehow.

Well I for once like this. I jump online to play game, not hearing the annoying voice of a 12 y/o bigot screaming at the microphone.

If you go to the pub and act like a d*ck you get punched. If you go paintballing and shoot some one in the back of the head at point blank you get sinbinned. If you do a bomb in the swimming pool you get kicked out.

Computer games are a bit like driving a car in that respect someone can be a d*ck and they're gone before anyone has a chance to say anything. I advocate, as long as it's not too heavy handed, having a word with people that are socially sub-normal. I also advocate throwing rotten fruit at people that cut you up so maybe I'm the problem.

So Microsoft is profiling people. It's your game, your console and your service that you are paying for so what right do they have to tell you how to use it? Im not giving these dictators a dime of my money. What next? Are they going to create a profile for people based on what they view on the internet? Probably already do. Knowlege is power and unchecked power is always abused. The interest of the people is not represented in our government.

@LancerVI isnt the point of video games to do things in it that you cant do in real life? i get where you're coming from, but i really don't think reality and virtual reality becoming one and the same sounds too good

You obvious don't understand services and contracts.  Perhaps if you paid for any of it, you'd know that it isn't "your service".  You sign a Terms of Service before using XBL agreeing that you understand you're following THEIR (Microsofts) Rules. So yes, knowledge is power, but you have neither on the subject.

Daelusca

@guardianofhonor  The questionable form of "profiling" is by an objective trait (skin color, sex, etc.); no rational person would take issue with "profiling" people based on their actual actions. "Government" isn't the problem here; paranoia is.

LMAO XD

If you seriously think America is the only country that spies on its citizens, you're sadly mistaken.  If anything, US citizens have more rights and privacy than any other country.  At least you hear about this, imagine what you don't hear from within your government.

@drujbanu So the advantage of the PS4 is that Sony won't stop you from being a jackass to other players online?

No. Just because it's the internet or online doesn't give people, no matter how young, to act like a fool.
