Microsoft: We don't "force" Rare to make Kinect games

"Forcing a studio to do something is never a successful equation," Head of Xbox Phil Spencer says.

by

Iconic UK studio Rare's most recent projects have been Kinect games like the recently released Kinect Sports Rivals for Xbox One, but Microsoft has never "forced" the company to make games for the camera technology, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer says.

"I've also laughed when people have tried to use the word, what I 'force' them to do. If you're around any independent studio, or like Rare a studio that's independent-minded, you'll know that forcing a studio to do something is never a successful equation," Spencer told OXM.

Spencer went on to say that Rare is, and always has been, free to look at "all kinds of different opportunities" when setting out to make a new game.

Founded in 1985, Rare is a veteran studio responsible for a host of recognizable games, including GoldenEye 007, Perfect Dark, and Banjo-Kazooie. Their most recent game, Kinect Sports Rivals, launched last month. So what is the company up to next?

"[Rare has] just come off the successful launch of Kinect Sports Rivals," Spencer said. "I think I've heard a few times from people asking about Rare--they're in the process of evaluating what they want to do next, and we're working closely with them to see what their new project will be."

Microsoft announced this week that Kinect, though it remains a core component of Microsoft's vision for the Xbox One, will no longer be included with every Xbox One starting next month. Spencer argues that dropping Kinect from the Xbox One package will actually lead to greater Kinect sales in the long-run. The new $399 Xbox One launches June 9.

Yep I actually enjoy turning my tv on with my voice so in the long run I don't care about kinect games.calling out commands in games works so tired of all the xbox trash talk :) playing with technology is kool :)

Kinect is amazing, those who say otherwise have never used one.

So I guess it's just coincidence that up until they made an Xbox game, their games were amazing.

Microsoft: we don't "force" them, we just don't pay them if they make anything else.

lol they don't force it, they just "strongly recommend". Sorry MS, you should have let Rare make what they want to begin with.

I wonder if Rare had slighted Microsoft or Bill Gates in the past, and what they have done to Rare is the ultimate revenge.  You don't kill Rare, you buy them, and then have them work on worthless and mediocre projects until the end of time.  A doom much worse than death, ha, ha, ha, ha!

Oh, that devilish Microsoft...

You still squandered their talent. These guys did Star Fox, Goldeneye and KI, and you got them making Grabbed by the Ghoulies and crappy Kinect games. What a waste of money and talent.

Google "Microsoft killed" and see what's the first suggestion

Phil Spencer is equivocating with his words. There is little difference between encouraging someone and forcing someone. No one has said that Microsoft held a gun to Rare's head. All they said is that Microsoft is behind Rare's choice to make Kinect games and that is still true. Rare is not doing it because the technology is good. They are doing it because Microsoft wants them to so this article makes a bogus point. This article was also probable encouraged by Microsoft with paid money.

Ok then, you 'encourage' them with big dollar.

Nah, you just threaten to fire their asses if they don't do as you "advise".

Think of it like this, Rare was Theon Greyjoy now they are Reek, Microsoft is Ramsay. Reek would you like to make some Kinect games? Yes M'lord, you know I love you M'lord.

Haha i like getting on here and reading the comments about anything Xbox and PlayStation related and laugh. Nothing but a bunch of fanboys and whiners. there are very few people that has something good to say about the actual article. Me, I really don't know what to say bout this one. It kinda seems like a random article to me xD. Incoming immature fanboy replies? My body is ready.

Grabbed by the ghoulies, conker reloaded, kameo, perfect dark zero, viva pinata 1 @ 2, banjo nuts and bolts, and the kinect sports series. Plus re-releases of banjo 1 @ 2 and perfect dark on arcade..........plus having had the rare ip killer instinct made by double helix. Doesnt seem like a bad use of rare to me. Ive thoroughly enjoyed all those games.

MS needs to find some talented developers and allow them to work on some of these Rare franchises.

Just shut up.  This is what got Don Fired.

You got your win, be quite and don't ruin it.  Yes, you don't force them but you do own them...  So you do tell them what they can and can't do.

Rare has never been a great match with Microsoft...the only company that encourages and nurture's Rare's kind of crazy is Nintendo. This isn't even about flames or fanboyism, I'm pretty sure the history of brilliant Nintendo-era games to mediocre-MS games speaks for itself.

Yeah you didn't force them to make Kinect games, but you also didn't allow them to make the games they wanted after becoming a Microsoft 1st party studio. Notice that all of their critically acclaimed games were from when they were a 2nd party with Nintendo and prior. Clearly there was some sort of "force" used against Rare because like you said "it's never a successful equation" and since Rare has become a Microsoft studio, they've rarely had success critically under them where it was practically every game they came out with prior.

This just goes to show that they're hearing people talk about how hated their crappy Kinect games are, and how we all think MS is forcing their studios to make soulless garbage, and they deny deny deny.

We don't force them to. We just won't pay to publish non kinect games developed by them.

Now Microsoft can also add the statement "We don't "force" people to buy the Kinect" to their repertoire.

It's difficult to trust anything MS says anymore. MS decides what games are made and not made. Period. You're also not technically forced to get a job, buy a car, or eat, but guess what?

You want me to buy Xbox One Microsoft, it's very, very simple.

1) Make Banjo Kazzoie and Banjo Tooie work on Xbox One as well. Don't give me the crap that it can't be done, you could easily write a N64 emulator emulating those games. I don't want to buy a 360 which is obsolete now to play them again legally.

2) Make the Conker sequel

3) Bring back Perfect Dark (and DO IT RIGHT THIS TIME), Blast Corps, new Banjo Kazzoie (again do it right this time), Jet Force Gemini.

4) A new GOOD Killer Instinct made by RARE, not crappy Double Helix. I want a GOOD KI game that plays EXACTLY LIKE THE OLD GAMES NOT LIKE STREET FIGHTER. If I want to play a game like Street Fighter I WOULD PLAY STREET FIGHTER.

Do these things and I will buy Xbox One right now.

Rare hasn't made anything worthwhile in so long that nobody is expecting anything great from them any more. We have the nostolgic games from their past and we thank them for it. The staff has had major changes and ownership by Microsoft has stifled their creativity.

No matter how Microsoft wants to word it, they have a strong influence over which of Rare's projects get worked on and which ones will make it to production. Maybe Rare isn't coming up with anything outside of Kinect worth Microsoft's investment. Maybe Rare doesn't get the opportunities to create new and exciting non-Kinect games because that isn't a priority for Microsoft at this time. It's an internal studio, so unless someone decides they want to get fired, the staff there will nod their heads and smile at whatever Microsoft says about them. "Independent-minded?" Maybe, but not independent operated.

I still have shivers when I boot up any SNES era Donkey Kong and see the iconic Rare logo and music theme. Shame what happened to this once great studio.

Celsius765

@grenadelaunchr  they can't really use it, there's only a handful of games that require it. without something major beyond cheap party games like Kinect Sports Rivals you really have no use for it

@Oloryn  Most of the people that were there for the Nintendo days are long gone.  The talent went to Free Radical and when that went belly up, they were scattered all over.

@chuckles471 @OlorynPretty much.  Rare hasn't existed since the N64 went away, and people are holding onto misplaced nostalgia.
