Microsoft ups Kinect estimate to 5 million

Xbox 360 maker increasingly bullish on motion-sensing camera's sales prospects as launch approaches.

by

In September, Microsoft predicted the Kinect would sell 3 million units this holiday season. Had Microsoft met that goal at $150 per stand-alone unit, the peripheral would have drawn $450 million in revenues compared to the $500 million the company is spending on a massive Kinect marketing campaign.

Microsoft hopes to make 5 million Kinect-tions this holiday season.

Those numbers have been updated to be more favorable to Microsoft, as the company confirmed for Reuters that its Kinect sales projections for the year have been raised to 5 million units. Although some of the cameras will find their way into homes as part of more expensive Xbox 360 console bundles, that many stand-alone Kinects would bring in $750 million in revenues.

At 12:01 a.m. tomorrow, Kinect will go on sale via three packages. The unit, which is compatible with any Xbox 360, will cost $150 bundled with the minigame compilation Kinect Adventures. Those two products are also part of a $300 4GB Xbox 360 package, which features the matte-finish, hard-drive-less version of the console, or a $400 250GB Xbox 360 bundle, which features the glossy-finish, hard-drive-equipped edition of the console.

A dozen Kinect-compatible games are expected to go on sale alongside the peripheral. Microsoft has three first-party titles in addition to Kinect Adventures: Kinect Sports, Kinectimals, and Kinect Joy Ride. High-profile launch titles from third-party publishers include Sega's Sonic Free Riders and Harmonix's Dance Central.

@XanderZane: I don't know the gaming community? I AM the gaming community. I've been playing these games longer than you could chew solid food. (Go ahead, ask how old I am). See, there are these things called "Trends" or "Fad's". The Pet Rock was a huge fad back in the 70's. That guy made over a million dollars selling friggen rocks with eyeballs glued to them. As we speak, countless Wii's are collecting dust on casual gamers shelves. The NES Powerglove made over 100 million in sales....Why? Because it was great? No. Because it was a trend and everyone just had to have something new. And with trends, comes the novelty. And as all gamers in the community should know...novelty wears off.

@SolidTy microsoft is talking about the potential sales figures because the company is floated on the stock market, meaning its open to people buying the shares which gives it more money to spend (capital) If it shouts up products then people will be confident in the company and buy stock, also some people will hear 5 million are going to sell and so buy one (kind of like the apple affect where its not that good but everyone buys one caus everyone else has one) So double win! As a PS3 gamer i have to say kinect is suprisingly looking the best of the 2. But overall still pretty poor. The best game looks like the dance one for the girlfriend. Not persuaded me to invest in an xbox yet. Hope it improves for you all and becomes super amazing!!

@frazzle00 This is coming all the way back from our first comments on this article.. But I just saw a leaked GT5 video which shows it has head tracking via the PS Eye, it just reminded me of what you said would be worth a Kinect purchase..

They probably won't sell that many, but I bet their next console will be shipped with an improved version and it will become a standard controller and sell very well.

I agree with keynnyjb... I already want to see a wireless gun controller with force feedback. Of course a good trigger button but then also just above the pistol grip where you would normally have a hammer that is where you put a small joystick just like on a controller for moving through the 3d world. That way Kinect can focus on you jumping in and out of cover, jumping, or running to sprint through a scene and then get into a crouch or even lay in prone position for maximum cover. Throw a grenade to blow something up. Call out A team, B team, or C team then point to send them to flank left or right. So much potential. The key is that little joystick and how to properly position it on a pistol control so you can move through and pick your shots by really pointing and aiming. Kinect will be the playground in which all sorts of controllers and devices will integrate with the 360. Right now Microsoft just needs to launch as hands free nothing else required. Think of it like a beach and you are playing in the sand. Soon enough there will be all sorts of new ways to interact within Kinects framework. Truely remarkable technology that many people are just looking at how it is limited rather than as a platform for all sorts of future innovation.

Kinect has so much potential. i'm in love with it. best piece of hardward to be released in some time. i can only imagine playing call of duty and giving voice activated commands. or calling for an airstrike. or commanding my troops to storm a building. how about play mortal combat and performing a bability/ fatality.

@lithus said: @XanderZane: Ah, never heard of that sports one. Just like the Wii games, there's a limited library of games that only works well with motion devices. Petting creepy emotionless animals and cheesey sports and party games, Pretty much the games the majority of the gaming community don't focus on. But I'm sure 20,000 Leaks will be a big hit with 4 million units sold by December. ************************************************************** You obviously don't know the gaming community then. You say motion sensor sports and party games aren't focused on, yet Wii Sports has sold over 66 Million copies and Wii Sports Resorts over 19 million. Even Mario Party games, which aren't the greatest, have sold more then 5 million copies on the Wii and DS. I think one of the problems with some hardcore gamers is they think they are the majority, when casual gamers are the majority. The Wii easily proves this. Where as the PS2 had a large combination of hardcore and casually gamers, the PS3 and 360 have mostly hardcore gamers, then casual. The Wii has separated that demographic area from the competition and Sony & Microsoft is trying to get some of it back with Move & Kinect. As hardcore gamers, you may not like these motion sensor games, but don't forget, they aren't targeted for you. They are targeted for gamers who own Wii's more then anything. Sony is modifying games like Killzone 3 and Tiger Woods 11 just to say, "We haven't forgotten about our hardcore audience." That's all that's about.

Hey, how about we all agree to some fairly basic points: Neither Move nor Kinect are likely to sell as well as Sony and Microsoft claim they will. Both are, at this point, little more than expensive gadgets with a few tricks up their sleeves. Both have fairly substantial flaws, but have promise if exploited correctly. Perfect! Just that I'll probably never get a Move since I find it too similar to my Wii, and since I don't own a suburban American home I'll never have a Kinect. A lot is going to hinge on if companies that normally are making Wii titles will multi-platform them out to these new add-ons (somehow) to try to broaden their consumer base, or just keep their weight in the easier money.

@captainHerlock I agree......... what alot of people have to realize is that nintendo didn't become a family console overnight, they have always been family oriented even in the 1980's. They took their lumps in the 90's and into the new millennium when gaming went more adult oriented but they didn't change, but this generation of gaming did. So here we are in this generation and family gaming is back and nintendo can do what they do best. which brings us to microsoft, i think they're trying to change what they are known for slightly with kinect and the problem they may have is that their fanbase may not be on board. nintendo was successful because their fanbase was on board and through word of mouth introduced it to other people who weren't gamers. But its still early for kinect maybe that does happen for microsoft.

@jb9776 The typical XBox gamer doesn't strike me as the type that would go for something like the Kinect. It might be perceived as "hardcore enough" for many.

Of course Microsoft is going to talk up their product(s). Would you expect them to do any less?

can't believe these xbox fanboys are still here arguing... and why do they have to think every negative comment about the Kinect is subconsciously comparing it to the Move so they get ultra-defensive and reply "It's better than Move" all the time? Is it that hard to comprehend that the camera based games of Kinect are not going to be appealing to everybody? Can it only be Sony fanboys who think it looks goofy?

just came from best buy, and wal-mart in denver co and kinect was everywhere. They had stacks of over 100 250 gig bundles, about 40 stand alone units, and about 50 arcade units at best buy, and slightly less at wal-mart. I was expecting them to be sold out but they had tons of the stuff. So from what i've seen so far 5 million is a strech. I got mine yesterday without reserving it and messed around with it a little last night and this mourning and i like it ok when it worked like i wanted it to. I had trouble getting it to recognize me last night and some games worked better than others. as a whole i'd give it a 8 out of ten. as far as what different sites has given it, ign gave it a 7.5, game informer gave it 8 out of ten.

@ADDADAC I'm surprised that your post is still up. I got a "terms of use" violation for calling "someone" out when he lied about demos only being available to PS+ subscribers. But since I'm not mentioning a specific name (or number) then I guess I'm safe from his whining, eh?

@lithus "Estimates" lmao...bet you they didn't estimate that the kinect games positively sucked. I think Kinectimals was the only one that didn't flop. ******************************************************* Gamespot gave Dance Central 8.5 score. That didn't flop either. All of MOVE games flopped. Sport Champions is the only decent game really.

Ok yall, I have a Kinect now. This will without a doubt be the big ticket christmas toy. It will sell a ton of units. If you think the Wii did really great for all those years at xmas just wait and see. My nieces love it, my mom loves it, my wife loves it.... This will be a big seller reguardless of if you like it or not. In fact I have yet to read a comment or story about someone that used Kinect and didn't like it. As for the assumption they will sell 5mil units because of broken units and rebuys... you never had an XBox did you. Maybe you didn't know this but, MS is very good about supporting their products. I had 2 boxes red ring on my over the years and MS replaced them both within days at absolutly no cost to me... not even shipping. But thats cool, bash on a company cause they arn't sony(whose PS3 suffered similar/slighty less failure rates on early versions). Way to sound intelegent LOL

only cause they will create a bullsht product when it breaks, people will buy another..simple..5 MILLION! how else do you explain 43 million consoles sold when there are only 25 million xbox live users...its only famous for party chat and netflix..games...where..single player games..where....

@10679 you do realize the word convenience is derived from the word convenient... sure its absolutely not hard or difficult to pop a new disc in (yes I had a PS1 and did it all the time), but it sure is CONVENIENT not to have to... just like i wouldnt actively go back to using CDs nor DVDs as there is little point. Too impatient to wait a few seconds longer for loading? take some adderall. Protip: UC2 loads basically once when the game first starts and streams the remainder without a loadscreen in sight as you play the game ... I dont get what you mean by all this waiting etc. Anyway, you can have your DVD, you can keep you CDs and stick to your 1994 ford Taurus, because somehow you have a way of justifying superiority in anything -_- In fact you should harken back to game carts like the N64, not only were they notoriously expensive and only hold 64megs max but man you cant beat their load times... something clearly the most important to you.

@yearof3000 Posted Nov 4, 2010 9:01 pm GMT 10679@ sorry I made you cry, for you can call me out over a simple error of copy and paste. You did same when i typed uncharted wrong lol. I just thought its funny how you blamed someone else for something he didn't do . From that i guess you didn't have the basic reading skills :P

Dmg051793
Dmg051793

@10679 Sure it's unnecessary. But it's a huge selling point as if someone only wants a Blu Ray player [which were very expensive at the time] they could buy a PS3 for only slightly more. But it may also be the next generation of gaming just as Cartridge to DVD and possibly DVD to Blu Ray. It creates much more space for games to be on.

@yearof3000 ""LOL are you serious LOL. The amount of texture seen in Unchartered can be easily seen in gears of war 2, enslaved." Wow you are lost in space... and genius Enslaved is also for PS3... and you spell "Unchartered" wrong! It's "Uncharted" and remember learning is GOOOD!" Actually i wrote that not frazzle. I could the same thing to you because you have accused the wrong person. Having proper reading skills is crucial when choosing the appropriate president for the US :P. Having the wrong spelling was merely my typo error. That quote was referring to some elses quote that said that uncharted have lot environment variety and i was merely suggesting two other games that i thought had just as much environment variety which also looked just as good as uncharted or even better than it. @Dmg051793 Posted Nov 4, 2010 1:16 pm GMT @frazzle00 Yes I do because when Sony rid of the Back Compat component, the price of their system dropped significantly. The price of the expensive PS3 now is only $450 compared to the original $800 I believe. So I think it's fine that they are making an accessory charge now for it. Got proof for that . I would think not having blu ray int he ps3 at launch would have prevented sony from nearly being bankrupt as its uneccessary for gaming.

10679
10679

@ColdfireTrilogy "i dont think being lazy has anything to do with it but rather convenience" Ya it is because changing disc takes less than 30 secs which ain't an inconvenience . "Uncharted 2 has an immense amount of textures, something no single dual layer DVD will ever compete with, and there really is no way you can refute that as its a fact. 14+gigs worth of unique textures will never fit on a DL-DVD -_-" First of all do you have to proof to so that the amount that the use to make the game was most textures not uncompressed sound instead? If your correct having it multi disk ain't that bad considering the game being quite linear. "Crysis has beautiful graphics but imho its got way to many recycled textures as the whole environment looks almost identical fo 3/4 of the game" I could say the same thing for uncharted games.

Emerald_Warrior

@AncientDozer No, I have never paid $150 for anything gaming related unless it's the console itself. $150 is completely outrageous. I'm not anti or pro-Sony or whatever. I own multiple consoles. If Kinnect was a console, $150 would be quite reasonable. But it's not, it's simply an accessory.

That sounds pretty believeable, to be honest. All of us agreed that the Nintendo Wii looked gimmicky and fake when they released it, and we all knew it would fail. Or so we thought. It's now the highest selling console of this generation. The exact same thing will happen with Kinect, the only difference being that the possibility for good core games like Gears of War: Kinect Edition (DON'T MAKE THAT PLEASE EPIC, JUST AN EXAMPLE) is much higher since its's coming out on a more hardcore console.
