Microsoft unveils its free Xbox 360 games for April

In April you'll get to shoot people, then shoot zombies.

Microsoft has unveiled the two games it will be giving away for free in April as part of its Games with Gold program for active Xbox Live Gold subscribers.

For the first half of the month you'll be able to download Hitman: Absolution, IO Interactive's attempt at resurrecting Agent 47. It might not be as celebrated as fan-favourite Hitman: Blood Money, but the most recent adventure of arguably gaming's baldest hero was well-received by critics: GameSpot awarded the game a score of 7.5 upon its release.

From April 16, until the end of the month, Microsoft will be offering up Deadlight, Tequila Works' zombie adventure set across a beautiful 2D landscape.

The two games follow on from March's offerings, Civilization Revolution and Dungeon Defenders.

But what about free Xbox One titles as part of Games with Gold? Phil Spencer, the previous boss of Microsoft Games Studios who emerged from an executive cocoon today as the new Head of Xbox, said at the start of February that we would hear news about that soon. It's almost April, Phil!

Meanwhile, over in the blue corner, Sony has announced that PlayStation Plus will be dishing out Mercenary Kings, Batman: Arkham City, Stealth Inc, A Clone in the Dark, Castle of Illusion, Velocity Ultra, and Pixeljunk Monsters Ultimate HD in April.

Shadow Complex is a great game.  I'm glad it is free now.

The first Hitman game I played so many challenges great fun, but I do wish they would release a Grand Theft Auto or something like that. But anyway this is the best game they have released.. Its a shame I already brought the game but I going to download it anyway.

Deadlight looks pretty cool.

I recall playing something like the first 30 seconds or so of Hitman 2, somebody gave it to me free and it was so bad I've never touched another Hitman game because of it. I've been pleasantly surprised by GWG games before that I thought would stink but my expectations here really are rock bottom, hopefully it'll give me another surprise.

Hitman Absolution is the first free game I recognized that's available on both PS Plus and Xbox Live.

Last month XBL free game selection is really horrible. In fact, it was such a big shame compared to PS Plus's Tomb Raider.

Why ps+ give indy games for free for ps4,and triple a games like tomb raider for ps3.that is just unfair...

I think Microsoft should make free games like GTA 4, Halo: Reach, Modern Warfare 3 or Red Dead Redemption. Won't hurt any sales, but will deliver fantastic games for gamers.

well already bought  deadlight on steam and could care less about hitman--and once again Microsoft not giving any good recent games--look at ps plus--it gave tomb raider free to ps plus subscribers ---remember me---devil may cry--come one Microsoft- get on bandwagon get more recent games

Finally, MS is giving somewhat more recent games now. To bad I already have both. I guess I'll download Hitman and trade in the physical copy towards something else.

And... already have Hitman on PS3 and Deadlight too.
Good games nonetheless, and Deadlight is not your everyday zombie game.

Hitman is nothing more than a steaming piece of shit, couldn't bother myself to play past the second mission. The gameplay is just so lame and boring!

Why don't they just make BOTH games available on April 1st and keep them free the whole month?

These are both great programs they have running.  Whether you own the games, don't own the games, who cares, you still get to play some great games with either subscription. Personally I have both and I think Sony has the better program but competition is good and it has really made Xbox live step up to the plate.

once again microsoft is behind sony's service.  I give them credit for releasing two relatively new and quality games.  Microsoft is improving it seems, but ms still shows their true colors offering hitman many months after sony did and releasing far fewer games.  You'd think that in light of the fact that they're so far behind in sales they'd be giving away lots of titles but no, of course not, this is microsoft we're talking about.

Amazon prices for this game are as low as £1.48. Microsoft are mugging you guys off. They could at least give Dishonoured or Farcry 3.

Decent games this round. Don't think I own Hitman Absolution. i might already have Dead Light though.

I wish you guys would stop comparing the two they are different and technically they dont have to give us a thing free.

Still hoping for either Saints Row the Third or Halo Wars... maybe next month?

At least you own the games once downloaded. You dont rent / lease the games which means when your PSN subscription, the game installs are dead weight. People need to realize and make this distinction. Xbox LIVE gives you free games while the PSN leases / rents you games that become unplayable once your subscription is out. So in reality the PSN doesnt give you any games ever. It just rents them out to you on a conditional basis

@jark888  Hitman Absolution was pretty damn fun honestly. Worth the download.

@pgl163  I'm pretty sure when your membership end you can't play those game in playstation compare to xbox where you own the game

Big mistake. Why do that if neither console is backwards compatible? I have over 100 Xbox Live Arcade games that I bought over the past 8yrs that I would lose access to if I got rid of my 360. Plus, there's still awesome games coming out for those systems.

@se007  I totally agree with the boring part. Just hate those games that make me feel like doing chore.

lhardwick692

@ohjtbehaaave just in case members only pay month to month-it ensures people will renew membership first of the month or middle of the month

h4wkw0lf613
h4wkw0lf613

@ohjtbehaaave Shorter timeframes make people feel like the offer is limited and thus, more important. Also, having 2 seperate offers entices people to come back for the second one when it comes out, exposing them to the ads on the "free with gold" section of the 360 dashboard. Microsoft's evil marketing at it's finest, really.

jark888

@HowlPendragon  PS Plus free games are carefully chosen. PS website has done questionnaire to listen to gaming community feedback about how they like those games.

@Eyekon313  well I dont seem to get anything out of xbox live so ive been paying them for nothing for years, where as the ps network i had for free and got to do the same i did on the 360.

M3o5nster
M3o5nster

@Eyekon313 It's not free though... You just didn't realize they were overcharging you for XBL before now (and still are).

PSYCHOV3N0M

NO GAMES ARE FREE. NOT ON XBL GOLD; NOT ON PS+. You have to PAY for BOTH services to get "free" games.

thebeachguy90
thebeachguy90

@GIF Yet you Xbox gamers have never said anything about paying to use the multiplayer half of your games that you paid full price. You paid full for half a game while renting the other half. Where are your complaints about that?

notfrylock1987
notfrylock1987

@GIF

lol...You don't own anything Digital. If you did, Microsoft would allow you to play these games on X1, or Let you download them for free on the X1 when/if Microsoft starts to import 360 games over, which doesn't look like it will happen if they are looking into a streaming service similar to Sony.

let me ask you this.

Lets say, two years from now, when both Sony and Microsoft fully abandon the PS3 and 360 (it will happen. They did it with the PS2 and the Original Xbox) and you can no longer access the PS3 and 360 servers and your 360's hard drive dies. So you think. "i'll buy a new hard drive!" guess what? You can't get those games back, because they were digital and you can no longer access the 360's Marketplace because is shut down because Microsoft is now fully supporting the X1 100% now.

So yeah. You don't own anything digital. keep thinking you do.

@PSYCHOV3N0M We know this already, do you want us to add the whole section from the disclaimer every time we talk about PS+ games? it is just simpler to say Free games of the month.

cvantu

@thebeachguy90 @GIF which Sony is now doing on PS4...so what's the argument? A half a game at 60 today is several times more in content than the 60 dollar games you got in 1991. I'd say that us gamers are getting pretty good deals today.

white_wind
white_wind

@notfrylock1987 @GIF they still support the PSP digital library, PS3 digital games will stay on the server for another 10 years atleast, and maybe more depending on how Gaikai works.

cvantu
cvantu

@notfrylock1987 @GIF wow...so according to your hypothetical scenario, we never own games. I mean, what if I had an NES, Geneses, SNES, and any CD based game, and the games broke...guess what...I can't play them anymore and I'll have to buy them back. That is exactly what you're saying.

lhardwick692
lhardwick692

@notfrylock1987 @GIF sony and Microsoft had to abide by their contract and terms--if sony says this game is free to ps plus subscribers as long as keep membership going then they have to keep it available to the subscribers--- as for your ps3 or 360 dying the odds of ps3 or 360 not being available anytime at all in future--at least in our lifetime--just buy a used one and redownload the game onto it---

I forsee that both sony and Microsoft will keep their servers  open and expanded to keep these games available--- as for console not being available get real --consoles out ther back to nes and super nes are out there to be found

chibi-acer
chibi-acer

@Whiskey3romeo @GIF  PS+ is a better deal, no argument there.  But that doesn't mean they can't improve.  PS+ would be better if you permanently owned the titles.

Don't be a fanboy and accept everything at face value, or nothing will improve.

CptMorgan21
CptMorgan21

@parabol69 Gamers are some of the most entitled people in the world. Kinda sad actually.  People don't complain this much about internet and cable prices, and they give you nothing for free.  Imagine a gamer getting HBO for free.  But I wanted showtime, thanks for nothing!

deadkingdg
deadkingdg

@blackace @deadkingdg@GIF I had XBL Gold, but I haven't bought a game for X-Box in a while so I cancelled my subscription. I'll just renew it when I'll get an X-Box One.

Undertaker575
Undertaker575

@chibi-acer @Whiskey3romeo @GIF  then people would only pay for ps plus for a month to get a specific game/s then drop the subscription until another game they want comes out on it… it would be counterproductive… unless they introduce a minimum 3-6 month subscription
