Microsoft trying to bring Halo TV series to Showtime

Halo series might air on cable before Xbox.

Microsoft is currently in “deep” negotiations to bring the Halo live-action TV series to premium cable channel Showtime, Variety reports.

Microsoft announced it was partnering with iconic director Steven Spielberg for the show last year. Spielberg will act as executive producer, and he'll be working with developer 343 Industries and Amblin Television. We don't know much about it, but Microsoft's Phil Spencer has said before that the show won't just be "filler."

According to Variety’s report, the plan is to have each episode air on Showtime first, then on Xbox, but with added interactive elements. Apparently, these interactive elements (and Microsoft wanting to be careful with its prized property) caused delays. Variety says the companies are now close to a deal.

Earlier this week, Microsoft revealed its plans for Xbox original TV programming. It discussed a number of shows including Halo, but did not mention a deal with Showtime.

Disclosure: Showtime Networks is a division of CBS, which is GameSpot’s parent company.

Meh - it won't work.  Everyone's been asking for a movie, every other bit will be seen as sub-par.  The only reason his WW2 Franchises worked out was because he used the same production quality as Saving Private Ryan (which wasn't hard to do considering the camera work and squibs).  This will need too much CGI.

This is great if they can lock it down on Showtime.............I only do HBO so it won't junk up my viewing pleasure.

Ughhhhh geez, im still puzzled to why i even have my X1 when i play my 360 and wii u way more. Ever since MS killed my favorite franchise banjo kazooie; im just like why are they hurting me like this...its bad enough they assume all their fans are nothing more then sport and shooter drones. This E3 is gonna make or break them...cause if i don't see some spectacular shit imma just kindly unplug my x1 and donate it to and orphanage or something.

Given the history of shows on channels like Showtime & HBO, does mean we get see Cortana naked?  I mean, there's very few shows on those channels that don't have excessive amounts of nudity or profanity.

In other news, Microsoft has cancelled the making of a new Halo game in favor of an "Arrow" game trilogy. The games are expected to use the same ironic comedy of the show, although the option of choosing one's path has critics concerned that the jerking impulsivity and magical thinking will be smoothed out by player choices, meaning the humor will ultimately be lost.

If this is as good as Forward Unto Dawn then sign me up. I love the Halo story so this will be an added bonus.

LOL!! What happened to all the exclusive content for the Xbox? Guess they realized it wasn't selling well enough to limit it. Another fail for Microsoft.

Xbox one is has still not released globaly a hundred percent, and as far as I know the tv mumbo jumbo is still only available to US, couple that with a smaller than expected install base and that is bad for your show. It is good, though, that MS noticed and acts upon the promise of a halo tv series not attracting as much buyers as they hoped for.

I hope halo tv series do well but should done movie  as well .

lol, guess the XBone install base made them reconsider the "exclusivity" of the show.

Stuff they hope people want to see badly enough to buy an Xbox? Great, let's stick it on cable, let it get ripped and torrented and remove the need. Brilliant work.

What's the point of having it on Xbox at all if you're going to air it on Showtime first? 5 seconds after the show is over, it will be available for download pretty much anywhere. Dumb idea unless they have it on Showtime and Xbox at the exact same time. Even then, it makes no sense. MS, what are you guys smoking? I keep waiting to see Redmond in a "this is your brain on drugs" commercial.

Another reason not to tune into showtime... I don't even have cable...

I use Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, PSN video unlimited, and Vudu... within the 5 of them, I pay less than half of a basic cable bill... and I get new movies, TV shows... ect.

The only thing I can't get the day after release is Game of thrones, or (HBO) shows...

As far as this Halo series... yeah, I thought MS was telling people to buy an Xone, cause it does it all??? Except, an exclusive franchise show, Airs on cable TV FIRST???

not gonna lie, this will probably get steamed/downloaded pretty badly

BEFORE Xbox ? - Well, considering how they're advertising all this stuff about Xbox TV shows etc - I'll take this report as a strong hint Microsoft doesn't have much faith in it succeeding.

I mean, Maximize profits by all means - but as an Xbox franchise & what they're trying to get the Xbox One to be... It should go out on Xbox One at say midnight for streaming then Showtime can run it at 8pm that day or whatever time they would air a new series.

Lol so now i don't need a xbox one well i never really wanted one unless it came with out a Kinect. Also with Microsoft's drm policy's and from what i have heard about their future with their gold program. Microsoft i can't trust you!!!!

@Overlord93  My thoughts exactly. Microsoft was telling us they were creating TV content exclusive to Xbox in order to increase the value of that platform. And now the show is being released on a cable channel? Weird.

That being said, I think it's a good thing that viewers might be able to access the content from more than one place. It'll still work in Microsoft's favor because it expands the reach of the Halo franchise and serves as marketing for Microsoft. So this might be a good thing for consumers as well as for Microsoft, albeit unexpected and somewhat contradictory to their earlier statements.

@Evamorgana  It was alright. It had really good visuals, and I thought early on it did well with the Covenant invasion, but I didn't like that they used another voice for young Master Chief, and overall, it wasn't really necessary to watch before Halo 4 coming out, and I would have liked it to be more necessary.

Hey, at least the Xbox Souls community can watch a Halo tv show while the PS4 gets exclusive Project Beast from Hidezaka Miyazaki and From Software. Those sweet early Alpha Screenshots are oh so Souls, oozes atmosphere already. We will be sure to post plenty of let's plays :)

@teller76567 Wow, where have you been? What DRM policies are you talking about? You mean the ones that never got implemented? You always get upset about things that don't exist? What exactly have you heard about their plans for the gold program? I've been a Gold subscriber since original xbox and, I haven't heard shit. They haven't made any announcements regarding Gold yet so, I don't know where you are getting this stuff?

Yeah I agree with that. I watched it after playing halo 4 though- didn't realise it was part of the 'suspense' (or whatever) for it. The visuals and the music were awesome. If they can keep up that quality (and come on- they've got Spielberg!) I will be very happy.

Somehow I'm going to have to buy an X1 as well as a PS4. Missing Halo 5 is going to be too painful.
