Microsoft to support Xbox 360 for three more years

Marketing executive Yusuf Mehdi says company to release 100 games for aging console in the next three years.

by

Just because the Xbox One is Microsoft's focus going forward does not mean the company is abandoning the Xbox 360 anytime soon. Microsoft chief marketing and strategy officer Yusuf Mehdi said this week that the platform will be supported through at least 2016.

"If you look at [Xbox 360], that platform lasted for seven to eight years and it's going to go for another three years," Mehdi said this week during the Citi Global Technology Conference. "It's incredibly profitable now in the tail."

Mehdi explained that the arrival of the Xbox One is not a death knell for the Xbox 360 by any stretch, noting that Microsoft plans to ship over 100 new games for the system.

"We are going to continue to invest in Xbox 360 and the two devices can work in concert. So it isn't like the day we ship the Xbox One your [Xbox 360] won't work," Mehdi said. "We will continue to support it. In fact, we're going to ship over one hundred new games on Xbox 360. So you'll be able to still play your games, just not on the same exact box."

The Xbox One launches in 13 territories across the world on November 22. Microsoft previously described the system's $500 price point as a "very good deal."

I have over 200 xbox 360 games...and I have just scratched the surface on playing all of them..so I will be playing them well after 2016...my question is...I can still play them as long as I like Offline.....But how will I get updates for the games?

Should I open up each one now and just run them for the updates?

Ironically, I think that the continued support for the XBOX 360 would actually help the XBOX One if the latter were backwards compatible with the former.  As it stands, people may decide to keep gaming on the cheap for the next few years rather than saving up to take the next-generation plunge.

Hey Xbox fans, from one Xbox fan to another, if you all haven't checked out the article on ign about the rumored ps4 ps vita bundle for $500 you need to. Also check out what the ps fans are saying. Now while ps fans bash MS for selling the Xbox One for $500, they are posting that even though they don't like the ps vita, they'll buy the $500 bundle if it comes out especially for the remote feature. Doesn't that sound like the Xbox One with the Kinect and the new and improved Smartglass app coming out. Doesn't that sound hypocritical? Bash Xbox One for being bundled with Kinect for $500 but will buy a PS4 bundle for $500. Let's stand up Xbox fans and call out these hypocritical ps fans. XBOX FA LIFE

They better support it for 3 more years with no backward compatibility and no way to transfer/redownload XBL games onto your XBone.  Still, this is not the news I wanted to hear, because they basically put a timeline on when they will shut down servers to the 360.  I know, I know they didn't specifically say they were shutting things down.. but what they did say was corporate speak to tell everyone they have 3 years before the 360 servers were getting shut down.

The 360 is the best console this gen. This move from Microsoft is not surprising. However, 3 more years is a long time. That could detract a lot of people from buying the XBONE, which would not be good for M$. An extra year would suffice. 3 more years is a bit long. It could also mean that there might not be a lot of next gen games in the next 3 years ? If so, I can't see how SONY would prosper given they are in the same boat as M$. From a personal standpoint, it simply doesn't make sense to have 2 consoles hooked up to the tv and one of them gathering dust.

Good job, MS!

I have a library of 360 games, so this is good news for me.  Now if the Xbox One were reverse compatible I'd have ordered the Day One edition.  I'll be upgrading my pc this November instead.  It's reverse compatible with every pc game I've ever bought.

Glad they will be supporting the 360 for awhile, because I won't be upgrading to the X1 anytime soon. I have been less than impressed

Why? Its not like theyre gonna release any more exclusives like Sony with the PS3.

Their thinking is finally going towards the right way,and I think it's quite fair in Microsoft's policy to support the old Xbox for at least three years. It should be five ,because they are thousands of consoles out there and Microsoft is not stupid to loose this potential target group.since these people supported the brand for so many years Now we will have to wait and see what games are they are going to give to the old Xbox. Are they going to give Fortza 5 ? The crew? And so many more. I WOULD APPRECIATE IF ANYONE FROM THE STAFF AT GAMESPOT HAS ANY INTEL ON THE UPCOMING TITLES.

"noting that Microsoft plans to ship over 100 new games for the system".

I'll believe this when I see it. Chances are, those plans will change, and we'll more accurately see 1/3 of that number, if that. Unless they are counting the cross platform games that are available on the 360 and XB1 at the same time.

I'm not sure which is worse.  X1 or Baltimore's defense tonight.

Of course they are going to continue to support it.  It's their best console.

@xboxfalife Uhm...I doubt your serious but...Of COURSE its going to be MORE money...your getting MORE PRODUCTS.

MaxTremors

You can't be serious. The ps4/vita bundle is a far better deal. You're getting two consoles as opposed to one console with a camera. Smart glass requires a smartphone, which significantly raises the price of the XBone setup. It's really comparing apples and oranges, but value-wise the ps4 bundle is much better.

They are addressing production. You will still be able to log in and play what you have bought.  My guess is the will release 360 for digital only w/out a disc drive.  Something smaller and more compact for all our arcade games and on demand stuff.

@SauhlGood

That's a good  question, this article just address that Microsoft will continue making Xbox 360's.

@Ninja_Zero_7 Me too, there's still a small handful of games I never got around to playing. Although I'm probably going to switch to the PS4 next gen, there isn't any game I'm interested in right now.

PSR8000
PSR8000

@Ninja_Zero_7 I agree.  I think it's a clever move from microsoft, as I am sure they know the price of Xbox one won't be accessible to that many at launch, they can keep churning out titles for the old xbox whilst the Xbox ones price becomes low enough for those to then think about purchasing :)

@Prats1993 Last time I checked exclusives are not the only games released bonehead, Then again you probably think it's cool they are releasing GT6 on the PS3 and NOT the PS4.

northArrow

@McGregor Yeah, I'm not buying that either. Have they even released 100 new games in the past 2 years?

@GLOK1132 Baltimore's defense.  X1 at least has Forza.  I am STILL laughing at the idiot from ESPN who said that the D would be better without Ray and Ed.

Defender1978

@mrfaceman23 @Defender1978 It does actually.  Had to work around some issues with that particular game, but it works fine.  If you are having trouble you should google support for it.

@sammoth Without exclusives there isn't much of a point in owning both consoles. If he can get access to every current gen game on the PS3, why would he keep the Xbox around?

MaxTremors
MaxTremors

You're entire argument is complete nonsense. Why would anyone buy the console with fewer exclusives. Sony has more, and higher quality exclusives compared to Microsoft.

northArrow

@jtthegame316 Thanks for the history lesson, it's sadly irrelevant to what's going on right now though.

jtthegame316
jtthegame316

@northArrow @sammoth i would say you are one of them boneheads that changed there tune on exclusives.sony sold both the ps 1 and 2 on the strength of third party games while sega was releasing great first party games on saturn and dreamcast but people like you was not interested in first party then but then all of a sudden now just because sony brings the odd good first party game out you guys are all of a sudden all interested in exclusives.

FrankZoex2
FrankZoex2

@McGregor @jenovaschilld If there are a 100 more games coming out for it and you like the 360 and aren't going to buy an X1 at launch why would you sell it? And lets face it they are worth next to nothing now.
