Microsoft suggests no beta for Halo 4

Franchise director Frank O'Connor says beta would be "huge interruption," 343 Industries instead focusing efforts on polishing and shipping new sci-fi shooter.

by

Halo 4 is due out this holiday season, but it's unlikely gamers will get their hands on a prerelease beta for the new shooter, judging by comments made by Halo franchise director Frank O'Connor.

A Halo 4 beta? Perhaps not.

In an Official Xbox Magazine video interview (leaked to MetaCafe), O'Connor said a Halo 4 beta would be a "huge interruption" to the development process at 343 Industries.

As for what a Halo 4 beta would be interrupting, O'Connor said the developer's focus presently is on polishing and shipping the game.

Though fans may not have a chance to play Halo 4 before its release, O'Connor made it clear the developer was "definitely testing the game at scale."

If Halo 4 does not offer a public beta, it will mark a departure from core installments in the series, Halo: Reach, Halo 3, and Halo 2, which all offered prerelease trial periods.

@blackace the pc is gonna be running on way bettter tech than the new consoles watch with DX12 & so on

*************************************************************************

The average gamer won't have that technology in their PC's The new next-gen consoles will be on par with the average PC games PC's for a few months after they launch. Hardcore PC gurus will probably have better systems, but that's always been the case. Gamers who upgrade once every couple years won't have that though.

@demonkingx5 @blackace don't know why the new xbox is gonna be outdated right out of the box compared to pc same for ps4 as well. ************************************************************* Not sure what you're saying. XBox 360 and PS4. won't be outdated until at least a year after launching. By then there will be new and better processors and GPU cards. That's just the way it is with game consoles. Of course PC gamers would need to upgrade every 12-18months to have the newest technology in their PC. I upgrade my PC once every 5-6 years. Just like my game console. lol!!

@David_Boreanaz If you really think the minor changes after 5 games is great, than your expectations for future gaming are very dull. And please learn when to use the word Troll, oh and please let me know what i said to make you so mad? what ever it was im sorry LOOOOOOOOOOOL!!

@David_Boreanaz First of all, it has not evolved much. Second of all if you think minor changes that finally reached H4

Well honestly im not too upset about this. I haven't played one beta for a recent fps that was sucessful. Halo 3 beta sucked, reach beta wasnt good, battlefield beta sucked, crysis 2 beta sucked. The lobbys always seem to kick you out or you cant find a game in every single one of them.

@Cozm1kaos So a completely redone graphics and AI engine, the addition of armor abilities, refining forge into something close to a legit map editor, a credit unlock system for new armor and effects, and an actual health system is not a change to the game at all? Those were the biggest changes to the series in a long time and it all happened from Halo 3 > Reach. I smell a troll... Considering all the franchised games out there Halo has been the most innovative on consoles as an FPS and they add new features EVERY SINGLE GAME. Halo 2 = Matchmaking and Live with parties before any other game. Halo 3 had the replay feature which all other games have borrowed from and added forge, and Reach had all the additions I just described. Please keep arguing with me that the Halo games don't evolve, I love it.

@Gelugon_baat recycled? Even Halo Reach wasn't recycled because it introduced new mechanics such as the armour abilities, before that Halo 3 had a similar thing (but different) with equipment added to the foray. Halo isn't a recycled franchise and does add stuff to the games as it progresses, it's done so quite frequently so it's dumb to suggest otherwise but the more likely explanation for no beta is simple, it's been handed off to a new company. They have to make it good and they can't waste time with beta's and stuff so they simply have to maximise there production time. When they're working on the next one and they've got the engine sorted out, the team has had already made a game etc. and they are more comfortable then they will find it easier to produce a beta on the side but for the moment it seems like the realistic choice is to not mess around.

Great Idea! - How many times have we played a Halo beta and loved it only to find that Bungie 'collect metrics' and make it worse in the final release of the game because of their so called 'statistics'. I'm soo glad 343 is taking over, they have most of the 'Original' creators of the first halo games, ever since Halo 3 onwards Bungie just lost it ..... making the whole thing into a power rangers game for 7yr olds.

They should have Halo muliplaye r"down pat" by now. I kinda like Halo muliplayer. But it doesn't need a Beta. I would enjoy it if there was. But it is better to have the actual game faster.

@unreal_master - Some of that team was working on the HAlo CE remake. You also have to realize this is their 1st game as a new studio, & their 1st attempt at the Halo franchise Games are finished when they're finished so if MS has a deadline for this fall then that could be rushing a new team, who doesnt have full experience with each other, who has their 1st attept at a franchise that they never created, & now have to evolove it as well. You could easily see how they need time. We dont know when they went into full production either. Game design is a slow process. Even if you tink its enough time it never is. Even in the article hes hinting at this.

@S-181 I for one don't give a rats ass what they do to multiplayer; I've got BF3 for multiplayer. And no time wasted with a beta means more time spent actually working on the game, hopefully the single player portion. And I'm all for that

S-181
S-181

the only thing im worried about is perks and progression. if its just armour upgrades, i can live with that. but weapon upgrades just take all the skill out of the game.

@Gelugon_baat You misunderstood me. Your error in reasoning is jumping from "they're not having a multiplayer beta" to "it is all just recycled assets from Bungie's Halo games." That makes absolutely no sense. gtfo my GameSpot

@Gelugon_baat Ever the pessimist you are. That's a cringe-inducing leap of reasoning you've got going there. "It's merely recycled"? Almost seems as if you didn't even watch the video; it's clearly a different game than 3 or Reach.

I think they should do a beta like Halo Reach's beta. The more feedback, the better the game.

I can wait for Halo 4 a bit longer if it means they will make a beta. Then they can see what needs nerfing or tweaking. The Reach beta fixed a lot of problems and the final game ended up being great. The Halo 3 beta helped notice a bunch of balancing issues. But if they don't want to release a beta, I think I can live.

Spartan_418

Even if there's no public beta, they'll surely have some sort of hands-on multiplayer demo at E3. And there are plenty of other ways they can test the game and gather player feedback before release. A beta would be nice but I would sorta rather be surprised when I start playing it on launch day.

they probably don't want people picking over the differences between devs. its going to b a lil different since theys switched devs they just don't want the fanboy backlash til after the release

@vault-boy It makes sense the way you put it buteven with dedicated testers there will be things a large mass of people would be able to find that small, professional groups won't. MMORPGs always have a LOT more bigs because of their nature though, and betas for MMOs are also mainly just to test lag and server load. When people say stuff like "It's just a beta," to defend an MMO that is not a good sign, all major design problems should had been fixed by alpha.

@Kell_the_Gamer thank god your not a tester. Testing video games doesn't mean playing the game. You break the game. Thats what your job is you go in their and break the game you go through every corner and every room looking for glitches. You do this for hours upon hours a day and that's your job. Gamers can't be good beta testers cause they don't test. They just want to play the game. The reason MMOs use players for the betas is they are to big to be tested by game testers. If a company could they would hire people whos job it is to test. Public betas only serve to hype up the game, they don't signify any quality of the game itself.

Kell_the_Gamer
Kell_the_Gamer

@RockySquirrel Assuming they were telling the truth, a lot of players from the SWtoR said that Bioware ignored almost entirely. Same thing happened with Hellgate London; the developers didn't listen to their beta testers. It doesn't matter if they were 'paid' beta testers or not. As opposed to what, 'professional' video game players? You need a group of beta testers who will play the game like actual players, because, cause you know, that's the group that is going to be playing the games?

Kell_the_Gamer
Kell_the_Gamer

This is kinda a stupid statement. The whole point of a beta is to have a decent size group of people to test the game and find the errors the programmers couldn't find on their own. It seems like they just meant an 'open' beta though.

Dark_Arcitekt
Dark_Arcitekt

O'Connor made it clear the developer was "definitely testing the game at scale." Testing on a full scale would be a good reason to bring a beta out,you would think. How big of a scale can you test without a beta? After the horrid co-op lag of Halo CE.Beta would be very smart.Even if a closed beta.

They need a beta for this one if any. New boots for a flagship title means a beta or demo of sorts should be given to let users test the waters.

they don't show new weapons but they are expanding halo story using other media which is great I read every halo book and playing the first game after exploring the story before gives a different perspective and more meaning to the game,

Unpaid beta testers apparently didn't do SWTOR much good... and I hate the trend that top games are being released full of errors. I waited months before purchasing Skyrim knowing that bugs galore still needed to be squished. Very unsettling...

There will be no beta because the game is being developed for the Nextbox and you can't beta something for hardware nobody owns.

darkangel494
darkangel494

I'm quite happy that there will be no beta. For the 3 main beta games I have played (cod 4, halo 3 and halo reach) the beta was better than the real game as casual gamers don't seem to know what makes a game good and complain about aspects of the game that make it take skill.

anticusho1984
anticusho1984

no beta means that they feel confident and use information from previous halo games or the online part of the game won't be that good, for me it's more like a experimental halo with the new studio, I'll still play it but I can't say it would be as big as halo 3. graphics don't look to improve from halo reach because the engine is similar or the same and the outdated hardware of consoles can't provide room for improvements, battlefield 3 which is one of the game with better graphics is not that amazing
