Microsoft skipping Gamescom, TGS

Xbox 360 maker decides to no-show open-to-the-public events in Europe and Japan, says they are "still important shows for the industry."

by

The summer gaming convention season is looking considerably less busy for Microsoft. The Xbox 360 maker today announced that it would be skipping the Gamescom exhibition in Germany, as well as the Tokyo Game Show.

Microsoft is taking a powder from a pair of big open-to-the-public events.

"As you saw at E3, we have a solid line-up of games launching this holiday, along with other entertainment experiences," Xbox Live director of programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb explained on his blog. "We've changed our approach a little, though. This year, Xbox will be focusing on smaller, more localized promotions and experiences for press, partners, retailers, and customers around the world."

Despite the news, Microsoft doesn't want its absence to detract from the events. Hryb added that "Both are still important shows for the industry, and we do wish the organizers well."

Gamescom and TGS are two of the largest open-to-the-public gaming events in the world. The 2011 Gamescom attracted a record attendance of 275,000, while last year's TGS drew more than 222,000 people over its four-day span. Gamescom 2012 is set for August 15-19 in Cologne, Germany, while this year's Tokyo Game Show is set to take place September 20-23.

Microsoft should skip TGS if they do not have anything to take about. And clearly they don't. Nintendo also skips but that ison purpose and fir a reason. It can be the Sony/Konami/Namco/ Ubisoft show!

This is why I bought a new PC, MS suck nowadays and have nothing to show (except Halo which I'll keep buying) so they have no reason to go to any conventions. They're too busy trying to be a PC with media services and the odd new bit of tech attached (smartglass and kinect) but till they get the games I refuse to even consider there next console. The 360 was awesome early on with some good games and exclusives but after a while they jut stopped doing anything interesting to gamers so screw them.

lol why would they show up they suck and they even know they suck not any original games to even talk about.

How many times can you show Halo and Gears? They've got nothing anymore but their smart glass. So sad because it use to be the premier system for games until Kinect showed up.

I can see them skipping TGS, since there's not much happening for the XBox 360 in Japan, but skipping Gamescom doesn't make any sense. They've done well in Europe this year, so they really should attend this show. Especially since what they showed at the E3 wasn't really anything special. Still no price drop or brand new IP's for the XBox 360. All the apps they are adding to the 360 aren't really needed since most HDTV's and Blu-Ray players now come with these same apps. There's nice to have, but they really shouldn't be the center of attention for the XBox 360.

Cause they have nothing to show?

Oh wait, Halo, Kinect, Kinect, Kinect, more media integration no one asked for.

Considering that these shows really don't cost these companies much in contrast to their total revenue, I'm surprised this isn't big news. Microsoft supporters in the other markets might take it negatively.

Skipping TGS makes sense since the Xbox 360 is basically a nonentity there, but skipping Gamescom is a little weird.

MS skiping the Toyko Games show I can understand. Mircosoft is better off skipping Japan next generation. The Xbox brand will never find success in Japan.

Their E3 show was very disappointing once again. 3rd party games were just filler, Kinect and smartassglass stuff...no point in beating a dead horse on Halo, GeoW ODST lol version by new dev, etc. What are they going to do, show up and show off Splinter Cell for Ubi, and COD for Activision? Nah. They are skipping both the TGS and Gamescom....but they don't care. They are rolling in Xbox Live Gold Subbys.

They didn't show much at E3 from their 1st party so it stands to reason they won't magically have 1st party games to show at Gamescom/TGS...and this isn't the first time they skipped out on some other shows. They really need to build up their 1st party, this is getting ridiculous and sad...and I'm a duel 360 owner. Give me a reason to turn on my 360! At this point, I just buy exclusives for the darn thing.

Honestly, what would they bring to the show? Halo 4, Gears of War: Judgement, and Kinect stuff. All of those things the crowd at TGS don't care about anyway since the 360 doesn't move units in Japan.

I approve of this business strategy from MS.

Really no surprise. They had what I thought was the worst showing at E3. Not that Nintendo or Sony was much better, but I have said many times over the last year or two that they seriously lack first party support and that it might lead to their downfall in the gaming industry. It is sad because they once had a ton of exclusives which prompted my purchase of the 360 in the first place.

Well, since they don't have anything new to show there's hardly a reason for them to be there. Put the resources on building the new Xbox instead.

They have nothing to offer so I'm not surprised that they're skipping it.

Honestly, I had a 360 my favorite 2 games were doa 3 and Gears of war. After a while of no real good games on the 360 that I could not get on the ps3 or PC I sold it and never look back except for DOA3, but there is other good fighting games out there. Hopefully the new xbox 720 has better stuff. I agree with many people who talked about lack of games for 360.

MS really need to improve their first party content. I'm really looking forward to Halo 4 and Gears but there isn't anything after that. Their FP content should be much better considering MS has enough money to buy the entire world. What the f~ck is going on with Rare? You can only get so far with multi-platform games. I'm surprised MS have done as well as they have this gen. Maybe if they were making a ton of FP content, they'd have a reason to go to these shows.

Sadly 360 is getting less and less games it seems.  All FPS with the few good games like Dark Souls, but even the good games are all multiplatform with no reason for me to get them for the 360 over the PS3.  MS really seems to only concern themselves with casual games (kinect) and apps (video and music) for the xbox anymore.  They need more exclusives and frankly gears and halo just aren't doing it for me when I get to play so many more jrpgs and such on ps3.

Kinda makes sense, they get their most money from North-America, or the USA should I say.. Going to TGS or GamesCom, with no new first party titles or new hardware, is just a waste of time, too.

MS, you wouldn't have to do this if you would just freakin' announce the Next Xbox already. Then you would actually have something new to show us, and wouldn't have to fill out your empty presentations with 20-minute Usher performances.

Makes sense.

Considering they phoned-in their E3 presentation, they may as well skip the Europe & Japan shows.

(Man, I was disappointed with their E3 showing!)

If I was an X360 owner I would be on my way to the store to get a PS3!  Their E3 was terrible and they don't have much in the pipeline.  What they do have is very good in GoW4 and Halo 4.  It's not enough and X360 players deserve better.

There isn't any reason for them to show up. They don't publish that many games anymore and they have no new hardware to show off. Most Xbox 360 games are third party.

 @svaubel All the "media integration" is awesome. What do you think people do when there's no new games out, like in the summer? That's when all the INNOVATION in the media sector comes in handy. The 360 is one of the only devices that puts HBO GO on a TV screen. I haven't turned my PS3 on since Uncharted 3, but I've been using HBO GO to catch up on Game of Thrones and True Blood. Watching music videos with Vevo is awesome too, instead of all the reality crap on MTV. The Xbox also started the Netflix trend on consoles. You have Netflix on your PS3 and Wii because of the Xbox. So give credit where credit is due.

 @Maverick2448

What they lack in exclusives they make up for with everything else (most sold console in the last 14 months, most sold peripheral (kinect) of all time, most entertainment options, etc, etc)

XanderZane

 @COPMAN221ISBACK

The only ones who have anything new to really show is Nintendo, since they will be launching a new consoles. Unless Sony brings The Last Guardian, FF XIII vs or GT6 with them, they won't have anything new to show either.

XanderZane
XanderZane

 @Rayzakk

They need more JRPG's. The released a bunch the 1st two years and now we may get one a year. They should have bought SEGA by now anyways. I don't know what they were waiting for.

Landsharkk

 @Spartan_418

They have no reason to show off the Next Xbox this year, because they are currently the best selling console for the past 1+ year.

Showing off a new console would then force them to put a price cut on the current gen and would result in a huge loss of sales this year and next for both the consoles and the games for the console.

I'm 100% positive that they will announce the next gen Xbox next year at E3 which gives them about 5 months of hype before they release it in the holiday season of 2013.

I would disappointed with all 3 companies showing. Who would have thought that UbiSoft would win the conference show this year? Not I.

 @CrusaderForever If you already own them all, there's really no place to go. lol!! Dust one off play it. Then repeat with the other two. I still have plenty to play on all 3 consoles though, so they don't stay covered for long.

 @Vodoo Rectification : Netflix is available in some countries and many devices because Microsoft didn't buy that company.

 @Vodoo Pretty much that ^^

Some people are so afraid of options and choices, it's kind of funny.
