Microsoft showing 'next chapter' of Xbox at Gamescom

Xbox maker returning to Cologne, Germany trade show in August after skipping last year's event

Microsoft will show off the "next chapter" of Xbox when it returns to Gamescom this August, the company announced today.

"Xbox will be back at gamescom this August," wrote Microsoft social marketing manager Graeme Boyd on Twitter. "Next chapter of Xbox gaming experiences on show."

Microsoft did not attend last year's Gamescom (or the Tokyo Game Show), saying it would instead focus on smaller events.

Gamescom 2013 takes place in Cologne, Germany August 22-25. Nintendo also skipped last year's show but will attend this summer.

Microsoft did not give any specifics regarding what it will show at Gamescom, but the company is widely believed to formally unveil its next Xbox during an intimate event at the company's headquarters in Redmond, Washington on May 21.

This announcement will "mark the beginning of a new generation of games, TV, and entertainment." The event will be streamed through Xbox.com, Xbox Live, and Spike TV in the United States and Canada.

For next generation, I think PS4 will win...although I may still buy a NextBox for some of those fun gadgets they'll be making for it.

I fail to see how "intimate event" and "will be streamed through Xbox.com, Xbox Live, and Spike TV in the United States and Canada." doesn't contradict each other, but I'm not a games journalist, so I'm probably missing something.

I thought Microsoft was showing the Durango before E3?  I'm guessing this is going to be a longer event to showcase every aspect of the system, a few months after E3.

I gotta admit, that starting $300 price with a sub to XBL is gonna win them a lot of purchases over the next gen.

I was only hoping for a few things this gen; obviously better graphics, the ability to plug into multiple monitors(360 viewing no pun), and a monthly service where I can play any game from xbox, 360, live, Durango instead of buying just a few games a year. When I heard always online I was hoping, that way they can protect from copying and game makers can get paid according to how much time u play. This wouldn't have to eliminate the disc but open people up to a world of thousands of games.

I wonder how much more information they will have after their event this month, and E3. It would be cool if they gave us something new each time!

I was really hoping to see the next console but it sounds like MS is releasing a book instead.  I guess we'll get to read a chapter.  That doesn't sound nearly as fun.

I haven't seen MS talk this much smack since Windows 7, which they backed up in multiple ways. I'm very curious now.

I heard you'll need to throw your bank details at them before being allowed to see it.

Gamesom has been Sony's defacto home turf for years now. For Microsoft to try and weasel their way into it takes lot of guts. I'll be beyond impressed if they make it to Tokyo Game Show as well.

@badwedgie00 A lot of people said the same thing about the PS 3, its a matter of choice, really. I personally will buy the NextBox, i just will never get used to the remote on the playstation and to be honest, microsoft havent wronged me yet.

@Hurvl I guess it's only intimate in the fact that they are having the reveal on the xbox campus...not renting out a venue.

@sapphire54 Microsoft hasn't officially confirmed that the meeting is meant as a reveal for the next Xbox. It's only ever been referred to as a reveal for the "future of Xbox" which can be anything so leave Eddie alone.

@Marcusraitor

They are selling more of their products and people use those other entertainment services...if those services would be poorly received, then they wouldn't be featured...so it looks like Microsoft is not doing it wrong at all...

@MarcusraitorThats why MS will be at Gamescom(which is gaming related) and not at the IFA-translated:International Consumer Electronics Fair(which is focused on all sorts of entertainment, phones to web-frigs) in Germany.

@sladakrobot @Marcusraitor This announcement will "mark the beginning of a new generation of games, TV, and entertainment." Thats why im saying this Microsoft should put all the resources on games, instead of wasting money on HBO, ESPN, tv series, music apps, and all of that. If they want to do an entertainment machine, they should do a new tablet or just an entertainment console. Xbox should only focus on games. Thats my opinion, if they do that, Microsoft could have a lot of exclusive high budget games.
