Microsoft 'rounding up answers' on Xbox One's DRM stance

Major Nelson says Microsoft is putting together a definitive list of answers to lingering Xbox One questions, and that "they look pretty good."

by

Microsoft has said it is "listening" to the various complaints and concerns surrounding the unveiling of its next-generation Xbox One console last week.

Microsoft spokesperson Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb said that Microsoft is readying up a series of answers relating to key concerns over DRM, the need for the console to check in online, and a perceived lack of focus from Microsoft on gaming.

Responding to a critical statement on Twitter, Hryb said, "I am working on rounding up answers, and they look pretty good. Once I have them all I'll make a post."

"And yes, we are listening," he asserted.

Many core questions about the nature of the Xbox One currently remain unanswered by Microsoft at this point, though the company has repeatedly assured gamers to wait for E3. The company earlier this week tried to calm fears about users' privacy surrounding the Xbox One's new Kinect sensor.

Last week Hryb said that "reports about our policies for trade in and resale are inaccurate and incomplete. We will disclose more information in the near future." A previous report had said Microsoft and the original publisher will receive a cut of every used game sold in stores.

Microsoft executive Aaron Greenberg has said the company's E3 showing will "get it right."

Microsoft does not listen to anyone! They will lose this generation and I think it's funny. I used to love Xbox but with these restrictions I will not buy crap from them. I just hope Sony is

Watching and paying attention and not make the same mistake.

Translation : "We started out going overboard so people would be happy we're scaling back the things they didn't like, while still basically getting what we want".

We're not stupid, Microsoft. Dump the online checks, the kinect requirement, and get your greedy paws out of used game or your console is going to crash and burn.

Sorry if I'm a noob, but what is a DRM? P.S. I'm not a child, I'm just not a techie guy.

I dont quite understand this whole fee for preowned games thing....  If its also publishers that are bitching they want more money, then why is it Sony doesn't have to do the same thing?  Im sorry but I think Sony is just keeping quiet with the whole fee for preowned shit b/c I cant see publishers ONLY charging Microsoft and NOT Sony, especially for a muti platform game.  Maybe Im missing something and I am posting this as a neutral fan of both systems.  I just cant see only one company doing this and the other walks sky free.  I live in the Tampa area and we have a newspaper thats called TBT. There was an article about this whole fee for preowned games thing over a year ago and how it will greatly affect gamestop but they DID mention BOTH companies doing it. So that is why I am so confused and believe that Sony is just keeping quiet. I believe the entire gaming industry is going to have to do this.

Xbox one would have probably sold a bunch of units and had the most hype out of any console ever just by simply announcing xbox live gold will now be free this generation, people probably would have even accepted that DRM stuff.

like seriously, why does microsoft make customers pay twice to play online?? it would be different if I could be in a house without an ISP and still play online from an internet connection provided by microsoft or something to that effect [that simply allowed you to play online not browse on your laptop and all that other stuff] but they dont even do that... so what am I really paying for?

daimprov
daimprov

Best announcement for the xbox 1 would have been eliminating the xbox live tiers and just making it free for all to play online like Sony does... that coupled with backwards compatibility and axing that DRM bull----, sure barely anyone played original xbox games or ps2 games on their 360's/Ps3's this go round but the new generation games were just so much better looking and more fluid it was really a game changer, it felt like going back in time playing Xbox/Ps2 games.... but this new generation is really not looking like too much of leap in terms of graphics or gameplay, just motion gimicks... i will still be playing xbox 360 games this generation without a doubt.

Are you kidding? Round up some answers? They know exactly what the answers are. They just don't know how to spin them to fix this mess they've created for themselves.

I guess the cowboys t Microsoft still have not rounded up the answers  Guess the PR cowboys are still working hard on the answers that they should of had at the reveal.

There's only two ways M$ can recoup from this:

1. Take off DRM on physical products (or hurry up and explain wtf they're gonna do and quit spinning in circles on every subject).

2. Provide free, dependable internet to all.

I'm not too worried about the Kinect part.  I can just stick a post it note on the sensor or, if they really want to, they can stare at me playing games naked.  Their loss (of eyesight)!

Nexrad

oh look now the idiot gamer cry babies can eat crow for speculating and getting all pissed off when they didnt know the whole story. Gamers lately are the worst people, such complainers its pathetic. They flat out said it was only going to be a reveal of hardware and E3 was games.

Cant wait to see them prove people wrong and see the Xbox One sales sky rocket. I dont even care that much because my PC is better than these consoles but damn people cry so much before they even have a chance to explain how it all works.

Interesting how there's no button to quickly go to the PS4 news hub, but there is one for the Xbox One.

Also, in the PS4 news hub, there's a lot of news about the Xbox. But in the X1's hub, there's none about the PS4.

Why is that Gamespot?

It's puzzling to imagine how they really don't have a clue about what's going on in a product they created. You shouldn't have to "round up answers" you should know them before you reveal the product

RussellGorall

I think it is a little late in the game to try and make up a stance on all this stuff.

Xbox needs someone different from this guy, someone who actually knows what he is talking about. Hard to believe many Xbox execs still keeping their job a year from now.

FknPitsy
FknPitsy

You all realise that this is exactly the same as all the digital media you have been purchasing over the last 10 years, right? I don't know why everyone is complaining so hard about this. Go buy the game like you should be and stop whining about it so much.

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

Come on then asshole. You were the one who said you were going to make up a list of answers. If you had just stayed the fuck quiet like Sony, most of the internet wouldn't have exploded due to your console reveal.

For most of us who can actually wait till E3 before making a decision whether rational or otherwise, this isn't a surprise.

steelmouth

if MS is really listening then they should have heard that GS commentators say they will never get the Xbox one no matter what MS does or don't do at E3,  so MS should just tell this million or so naysayers to go get a PS4 and live happy ever after, then focus on us who still have one eye on the xbox one, clear up the always online crap, tone down on Kinect and give us those 15 exclusives and make them at the Halo/Gears/Alan Wake level or at least Crackdown/Ninja Blade level, or split them in half, half AAA half Kinect

Snaptrap

When Microsoft beats around the bush, it usually means they're hiding a monkey.

Or they could just give people the straight truth. The only reason they wouldn't is if it's bad news, and this is why their silence is pushing people away from the system.

When I thought MS couldn't insult gamers anymore than they have with this whole xbox1 debacle, I am presented with another slap in the face when I turned on my 360 to play a game. First let me say, I'm so sick of MS and their shit, my live ran out and I'm not renewing it.  So to "celebrate" xbox1, it says I can get 3 months of xbox live for  free! So I read the terms.... I buy 3 months, get 3 months "free", and then they renew my membership at current subscription prices. Wow, what a deal! Thanks Man! Instead of paying $60 for what Sony and Nintendo do for free(without ads!) you want to give me this "deal" so I end up paying $75! Thanks for the deal MS but you can shove it up your ass. I am done with this pathetic company.

@TT_audi_34 It stands for Digital Rights Management. Basically copy protection. It can take different forms. Online checks, embedded codes in media so it can only be run on a particular machine etc. In this case it's all about the Xbox One's insistence on an online check every 24 hours.

icemelt7
icemelt7

@TT_audi_34 It means that you must connect to the internet to play your game on your console. If you disconnect the game will not work

Uesugi-dono
Uesugi-dono

@skiggy29 Well, Sony did vocally back away from this early this year.  They copyrighted an anti-used game DRM system but publically stated it will NOT be implemented with the PS4s generation.  My guess is MS will try to use this additional revenue to woo exclusive titles to the X1 but, with public reaction the way it is, I wonder how many takers they will realistically have.

Uesugi-dono
Uesugi-dono

@daimprov You are not wholly wrong.  I don't think people would have generally accepted the DRM but there would have been a lot less universal hate and a lot more loyal Xbots hyping the free XBL as a sign that MS would rule the coming gen.

Uesugi-dono
Uesugi-dono

@Silviiwilvii - Probability is the Kinect will cease function if it cannot 'see' how many users are in the room... that's how it will assess license fees.

buffaloblitz85

@Nexrad This site and its sketchy article titles don't help the cause either.... i.e. Microsoft To Be Always Online?,  Xbox One To Be Always Online?....  This is borderline tabloid news every time.  Also you have to love the 'sources' that come up with this guess work. LOL

csward
csward

@Nexrad Before you insult the vast majority of people on this site, did you ever stop to think that maybe, due to the uproar, M$ changed their original proposal, especially if Sony isn't doing the same thing?

At the very least they will spin their responses to trick consumers for awhile. Oh and they did have a chance to explain how it all works, unfortunately, leadership was too busy to monitor the development of the Xbox One, because they have to "round up answers" to basic questions (or buy time to come up with ones consumers will like).

stanknuggetz12
stanknuggetz12

It's two weeks into 6+ year next gen life span. The console doesn't come out for five months and its too late in the game to actually officialy announce thier consoles features? Do you have any idea how ridiculous that sounds?

buffaloblitz85
buffaloblitz85

@FknPitsy Most digital media in the past 10 years doesn't cost 60 bucks a pop either.  That's the problem, gamers are more than willing to dish out a couple of bucks for an app or even 5,10, or 15 for an arcade/ indie game but 60... no a little to early for that. Maybe 5 years down the road they might, but not now

tevic
tevic

@FknPitsy I have to add to what RussellGorall said that no, it is *not* the same as with the other digital media.

Here you need to be online to just USE the product you bought. Even maybe Blurays btw.

I cannot think of any other device existing with that requirement.

RussellGorall
RussellGorall

@FknPitsy No problem with treating DLC with DRM.

For console gamers having a retail physical copy of a game being treated as DLC is new, and it makes no real sense to ever buy a game at retail.

When you expect little, you get little.

@steelmouth Sorry, but I think we all know that most of those 15 "exclusives" are going to be Kinect titles. MS is too much in love with their motion controls.

@buffaloblitz85 @Nexrad Guess work? It's mostly interviews with MS PR. Did you see the interview with Phil Spencer? He did say there that the box will have to be online periodically in order for it to work. He said a lot of other things you'd consider "guess work", yet it came from MS' own mouth.

Unless you think the company itself is developing the console guess working.

buffaloblitz85
buffaloblitz85

@stanknuggetz12 It's not that it is too late, but the fact is that it only hurts MS by not answering these questions.... MS is creating a lot of disinterest and hate by not answering these simple questions.

wweraw123

@buffaloblitz85 @stanknuggetz12 Too true. While they may make the argument that any publicity is good publicity, I would say they are making the wrong move here. With that being said, MS still has a ways off before the console comes out, and this may be a strategy (albeit a bad one) to get people talking about their system and not the ps4.
