Microsoft rolls out huge Xbox One update, teases external storage support

A whole load of Xbox One updates to arrive ahead of Titanfall.

Microsoft has begun rolling out a major Xbox One system update that addresses some of the main complaints from system owners.

The main addition is the new Party Chat mode, and new multiplayer functionality, which should be handy for the launch of Titanfall next week.

Other updates include Twitch streaming support (although the Twitch app itself doesn't launch until next week), Dolby Digital optical output, 50hz mode, and other tweaks that should make it easier to use the Xbox One with your TV, speakers, and other various bits and bobs.

Microsoft also teased that external storage would be coming in a future update, alongside more improvements to friends notifications. "Just as we do with Xbox 360, we'll be continuing regular updates to Xbox One," said Xbox product boss Marc Whitten. "Some will be big, like this March update, and some will be smaller."

Here's the full list of updates, explained by Whitten:

  • Get to your friends list faster. The friends list is now front and center on the homepage of the Friends app. Click the Social tile on Home, or say “Xbox, go to Friends” to see who’s online and what they’re up to. From there you can quickly send messages and get into a party.
  • Party chat on by default. When you party up, chat audio is turned on by default.
  • Chat with friends playing different games. Party chat is now separated from people playing your game, so you can chat with your friends who are online or you can chat with everyone playing the game.
  • “Invite friends to game” option available in your multiplayer titles. Similar to Xbox 360 titles, when you’re inside a game's menu you have a simpler and quicker way to set up your multiplayer battles. Selecting “Invite friends” lets you invite friends to your game and party.
  • See a list of “Recent Players.” This is a simple list that shows you Xbox Live members you’ve recently played with, making it easier to stay in touch with people, add new friends after your multiplayer sessions, or report a player for bad behavior.
  • Twitch live streaming support. The best broadcasting and spectating experience on any game console is on its way to Xbox One with the new Twitch app launching on March 11, just say “Xbox broadcast” to start sharing. Xbox One is the only next-gen console that allows you to archive your Twitch broadcasts and view live Twitch streams regardless of their original source.
  • Dolby Digital sound. Optical out now supports 5.1 Dolby Digital, enabling devices such as sound bars and headsets with only optical in to be able to receive 5.1 Dolby Digital from Xbox One over optical. We’re also adding support for Dolby Digital surround sound over HDMI. Now you’ll be able to have the best sound quality no matter what speaker setup you are using.
  • We will now support 50Hz output to Xbox One. You can set the live TV app to display at 50Hz for full or fill modes, fixing the frame rate issues some users in Europe have been experiencing while watching live TV on Xbox One.
  • Volume up/down adjustments. We’re making it easier to adjust the volume on your Xbox One. Now, you can tailor the number of volume increments when using “Xbox volume up” or “Xbox volume down” voice commands.
  • New ways to stay connected with SmartGlass. We’re introducing new ways for you to stay connected with your friends through Xbox One SmartGlass. Receive notifications of Xbox Live messages, check out what your friends are doing, and see their latest highlight clips. You can even unsnap apps with the tap of a finger – all from your personal device.
  • Support for new Xbox One accessories. Xbox One now supports the recently announced Xbox One Stereo Headset and Adapter, the Xbox One Media Remote with a dedicated OneGuide button, as well as third party headsets.
  • Browser improvements. When you’re searching for content, there’s now a direct link to IE to see related results on the web. New gesture and controller features let you directly zoom and pan Bing and Google maps. And search is even faster in IE – just highlight a phrase on a web page and press the menu button to search Bing and learn more.
  • IR blasting of power and volume to TVs/AVRs is now available in all regions.
  • Easy sound bar setup. Your audio sound bar set up just got a lot easier. You no longer need to type in the model number for most sound bars or AVRs when setting up TV on Xbox One.
  • General improvements. Last, but not least, a few miscellaneous updates like the ability to view Game Clips while in Snap mode and a new passkey feature to protect user settings.

GDDR5 memory is faster, but not for what it is being used for. the only reason why sony went with it was because it was cheaper then GDDR3 which is a much more stable direct ram to use as system memory. good job sony trying to convince ignorant people that you made a great choice their by throwing some numbers on paper, again.

a $399 and bundle with Titan fall is seriously a great price if the rumor is truce. Will get it along with PS4 when they released Infamous SS.

Microsoft and Sony console division are all doing amazing lately, hope that Nintendo will catch up. God bless Nintendo :(.

I want an update to make 7790 GPU to 7850 or better to justify this 100$ difference with PS4. Everything else. . who cares!

cozmokron
cozmokron

@AzatiS  why? the 7790 is performing nicer on xbox one and has a more consistent FPS.  not that it will make any difference or anything because of ps4's bottlenecks but, your a complete idiot it would seem when it comes to computer engineering lol.. or your just a ps4 fan and your horribly lost

@AzatiS  you do realize that ps4 has cheaper parts a poor design and flaws through out the design with it's cheaper components? and you do realize that when xbox one starts making next gen code native 1080 p games they will look way nicer on xbox one and run smoother then ps4? not to mention when we get their how ps4 will be struggling and over heating way more. just look at how many ps4's are failing from heat problems and having missing frames compared to xbox one right now and then triple it when we get to the new thick coded next gen production. xbox one is superior to ps4 the statistics have been out for ever. anyone who knows how computer's work in respect to component communication would see that ps4 is a cheaper build and not as advanced by any means. higher numbers on paper does not mean better in the areas sony attempted to look Superior in on paper especially with the bottleneck of the software and the rest of the hardware in ps4. it's out of proportion in it's specs to allow for it to utilize it's full graphics capability of the newer card even in future productions. ignorant people think ps4 is more powerful but it's not. it can handle current gen code games made next gen better because of it's older operating system for now and that's about it.. it's going to cause major issues with ps4 down the road when the big games hit after 2014 and game companies dedicate to next gen production. xbox ones will stay cool and running consistently, and you think ps4's are getting to hot now lol just everyone wait.

You hear about "cyber spies" who go into message boards and spread anti-American/pro-(insert whoever here) sentiment, and sometimes I wonder if Sony and Microsoft have employed a few of these agents... How can people be so stupid, and persistent?

In all seriousness though, it's good to see Microsoft rolling out updates.

cozmokron

@AmbiguousAlias  mostly just resenting ps4 fans with nothing better to do while they wait for their refurbished ps4's so they come onto xbox one channels to spread rumors in a attempt to troll people with pity information to try and justify themselves.

@StevieJayMac  it's still early, no need for the extra way to go though that's just negative and unnecessary

how about streaming custom soundtracks like we could in 360? THAT's the update that'll get me where I wanna be

@dgnr82cool  The music in the Forza is so boring I would love to be able to change the music.  I would prefer it if it was like the first Project Gotham on the original XBox.

Only thing I find useful is the external HDD as with all these HUGE updates and forced install space will run out fast. The rest is of no use to me personally. Good they are looking after their gamers tho :)

grove12345
grove12345

@Wrathesoul  worried external HDD will be too slow to run any games on. But ok for media...which XB1 doesnt support for some reason.

They better start supporting everything under the sun if they want to out sell PS4

akuma12345
akuma12345

@grove12345 @Wrathesoul I personally think they should get rid of the kinect, it's the biggest reason why do people prefer the PS4 over Xbone. I think the kinect is a great feature but meh ... waste of money imo. I mean just look at the previous last-gen the PS3 is more powerful, have bluray and free online but do anybody want it ? Yes, but they're just minority. why ? Because it's fucking expensive and waste of money ...

Keep the positive changes coming! It may have had a rocky launch...but I appreciate that they are taking the time to fix their errors. Between the X1, PS4, PC and Wii U...it's a good time to be a gamer!

@lramon89 It's annoyingly hidden away. Go to  Settings> Tv & One Guide> Troubleshooting> Audio - from here you can select your increments

Wonderful to see how fast the system is progressing.  As usual Microsoft is making a system that will only get better over time.
