Microsoft: "Really exciting things" for Xbox One planned post launch

Corporate VP Phil Harrison says Microsoft is cooking up new features for next-gen console to arrive after release next month.

Microsoft has "really exciting things" planned for the Xbox One after its launch next month, corporate vice president Phil Harrison told Edge in a new interview.

Despite policy reversals this summer, Harrison said Microsoft's "fundamental vision" for a digital-based future remains in place, though the company has "reordered priorities a little bit."

"We have a very significant engineering team--some of the smartest people I've ever worked with--who are very focused on launch right now," Harrison said. "But as soon as we get past launch then there are some really exciting things that are on the way."

Microsoft product planning director Albert Penello told GameSpot this summer that the Xbox One will allow for loaning and trading of downloaded games sometime after launch.

"I think we need to do that. That has to be part of the experience," Penello said.

He also teased at the time that backward compatibility through streaming may be offered on the Xbox One some day and that the Family Sharing plan will return.

The Wall Street Journal reported this week that Microsoft is developing wearable technology similar to Google Glass, backing up a report from last summer. In the Egde interview today, Harrison was asked outright if Microsoft is working on virtual reality or augmented reality technology.

"We wouldn’t make any specific announcements here but we've put USB 3.0 ports on Xbox One for a reason, which is that we want high bandwidth communication with other accessory or companion devices," Harrison said. "I'm not going to speculate but we definitely designed the platform to extend over time."

The Xbox One launches November 22 for $500.

I wonder how much Microsoft paid for this story?

If they can pull power from the cloud then what it stopping them from making an add-on for more RAM and CPU power that plugs directly into the box.  It makes sense.  Then they could, in theory, go from this Next-Gen to Next-Next Gen with only the need to buy a $199.00 add on. hmmm.

I hope so. I am holding off until summer to buy mine anyway. Anything you can bring out between now and then will only add to my list of whether to buy Xbox One or PS4.

Removing Kinect will go a LONG way towards that. Still a little pissed I will need to buy plug and play kits once again! But I think I can handle that if it means I won't have to use a Dualshock.

"We're gonna do a bunch of super cool stuff after the launch, but we can't tell you what any of it is. You will just have to trust us that it's SUPER AWESOME and buy a system at launch and maybe we will tell you later what this super cool stuff is."

So sad to see people whine even when they bring good news.

What did we gain from this article? "We'll do stuff after launch!" who'd have guessed!
Come on, you don;t have to post an article as soon as a spokesperson opens their mouth. This isn't newsworthy, this is just plain common sense.

I believe you Phil. :-)

At least I will when I see what on earth you are (almost) talking about.

There isn't actually someone so dumb that they think a billion dollar company is spying on you is there? Show me one article where Microsoft says there using Xbox one to spy on you?

@blaine36s Yeah, Microsoft is definitely just going to come right out and say it, just like the NSA did right?!? Let me just have Phil Spencer give you a call. I'm sure it says in his job description that he must always be 100% honest and up front with anyone that asks any question about the company.

Also, didn't you know that an undercover police officer has to tell you he is a police officer if you ask him?!?

@noandno No.  I think they are referring to the "targeted advertising" they previously said "we COULD do but we aren't going to but think of it as a GOOD thing if we DID do it."

@musalala You can read, just read the article, buy console and you will see what the future holds, MICROSOFT has shown the long term vision for their console - SONY, on the other hand, haven't done it yet. They said a little about their games which they, to be honest, don't have  and 24 exclusives coming in 2014 which can be mostly cheap small studios games but you will notice it after buying their console. They've lied about that their console is 50% faster - you can read recent article on GAMESPOT if you don't know that. I don't believe SONY and I believe MICROSOFT - I told you why. Nobody is desperate, at least nobody except SONY :)

Sundberg_man

@djmellowd MS still haven't shown a single reason why i'd want to ^^ I'll stick with PC :)

@djmellowd How do you excited over this? There has been no say what so ever what they are adding or looking to do. It could be the worst news ever or the best. Yet your saying it means a lot of fun. I don't remember a single update which made my 360 more fun. The games did that.

sanchango

@jd7904 @blaine36s ^while a valid point, the chances of being spied on is really really low. Also, you can disconnect the kinect and put it back in the box, so yeah...

@djmellowd @musalala Sony has never said that PS4 is 50% more powerful than Xbox One. Other experts have informed that even though you don't have to be an expert to realise that. Sony even has the same "cloud computing" capabilites than MS so there's no referring to the "Power of da cloud" with Xbone anymore. It's funny how M$ is using a billion dollars to make games for xbone but the budget for the console itself seems to be a half eaten potato. And also considering how much smaller and smoother the PS4 console itself is with much better tech inside is just weird. What's the lie about being 50% faster anyway? 1,84 tFlops of GPU power vs 1,31tFlops, GDDR5 ram @ 5,5ghz vs DDR3 RAM @ less than 2ghz(???) and also the number of stream processors is significantly higher in PS4, the 3-laeyr OS on Xbone is just like poison for devs compared to the more simple and less resource taking OS of PS4 and OpenGL beats D3D any day and PS4 uses hUMA/HSA technology more effectively than Xbone, if we believe the devs on both sides and AMD. AND THE GAMES, HOW CAN YOU SAY DAT PS4 NO GAMES?!?!?!? Son I am disappoint!

IAMTYLERDURDEN
IAMTYLERDURDEN

@djmellowd @musalala Why would Sony be desperate? They're not the ones constantly doing "damage" control. That would be MS my friend. Sony is quiet because they're confident in their product.

@drawngunslinger I posted a very, very simple answer about the gap between these 2 consoles. Why would I post more than that since this is a comment section on a gamespot article? Maybe the "awful command of language" is because of my mother tongue not being english? And why the hell would I base my knowledge on some comments when there are real articles about these issues, made by some real computer tech experts? Do you base your knowledge on other peoples' gamespot comments then? I happen to know very much about these issues myself since I'm studying IT and computers have kinda been a really big hobby for me since I was 5 years old. Wasn't the post that I made earlier clear enough for you to understand? What didn't you understand about it? Who are you to doubt these issues which I posted since those aren't opinions, just the specs of these consoles which are facts, aren't they? Chill out and grab a beer dude!

drawngunslinger
drawngunslinger

I seriously doubt that you have the capacity to understand all of what you just wrote, given your awful command of language, and suggest you are simply repeating what you have read on other comments sections. Please prove me wrong by explaining what the numbers that you are quoting actually means.

IAMTYLERDURDEN

@djmellowd If we don't know how many games MS or Sony has coming, what makes YOU so sure Sony is lying? I'm sure they have a better idea of what the competition is doing than you do. Anyway, who gives a shit?!

djmellowd
djmellowd

@IAMTYLERDURDEN @djmellowd @musalala You know it's not true because MICROSOFT is concentrated on their console and SONY refers to them all the time, last time they said another lie that they have more games coming than MICROSOFT but to be honest they don't know how many games will MICROSOFT have. Totally ridiculous, cheap strategy of selling. SONY is quiet because they don't have anything to say about their product than that it is for games and they will have them later but which titles we will tell you later as well :) Poor SONY :)

crazy-roman
crazy-roman

@Arijan83 @crazy-roman @djmellowd Well both I believe are allowing current gen upgrades for digital copies, well I know Sony are... unless you mean buying it online and trading that in to get money off another digital copy? Also didn't they scrap the loaning digital copy when they scrapped the family plan?

crazy-roman
crazy-roman

@djmellowd @crazy-roman The experience of gaming is with the game itself, regardless how you get it. I never knew ordering a game online or purchasing in store was so difficult. Even so, they already offer digital versions now. How is that getting made any better now.

djmellowd

@danabo @crazy-roman @djmellowd Not only, cross platform playing, loaning and trading games bought on XBOX LIVE, sharing, streaming and many more which I am reading about right now.

crazy-roman

@danabo @crazy-roman @djmellowd Yeah, but you already get that haha... what updates and new things after launch? I mean it sounds fun already the way you put it. I always hated my TV remote to change channels.
