Microsoft: PS4 and Xbox One selling well is "great news" for the industry

Xbox chief of staff says sales performance for new consoles is a positive overall for the business.

by

Strong early sales for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One is "great news" for the gaming industry overall, according to Aaron Greenberg, the chief of staff for Microsoft's Xbox division.

"I believe we both sold everything we made. Great news for the industry," Greenberg said on Twitter last night after November NPD Group data was released. "Awesome to see consumers supporting big time. Took five months for 360 and PS3 to both sell 2 million," he added.

Data from the NPD Group released yesterday showed that the Xbox One sold 909,132 units in the United States during its first nine days of availability.

Overall, the PlayStation 4 outsold the the Xbox One in November (it was released a week earlier), but the Xbox One was the fastest-selling console during the month.

Greenberg is not the only industry executive to say that strong early Xbox One and PS4 sales sets the table for success down the road. His comments follow a similarly rosy assessment from Grand Theft Auto parent company Take-Two Interactive president Karl Slatoff.

"There are a lot of doubters about whether or not the console market in general is dead," Slatoff said this week during a BMO Capital Markets conference. "And I think the successful launches for the PS4 and the Xbox One have proven that obviously console gaming is alive and well."

Can't wait for more developers to make even more games for both consoles.

I can't believe people are debating over this. If you look at the numbers then Nintendo is actually in a better position than any of the other console sellers. Nintendo actually makes a profit, or sells their console at a very slight loss in comparison to Xbox, and Playstation. It actually took playstation up to the end of the console cycle to start earning a profit on the PS3 and took xbox an insane amount of time to finally break even on the 360.

It is great new as it means more developers will make games for these platforms rather than just stick to the last generation.

I think it's great that both systems are selling rather well.

^Or get masscred PC gaming-wise, this is the company that thought up of GFWL, and comparing that to Steam...

Yes and no. I'm still a little amazed by the number of people who would trust a company who's last console had a failure rate estimation of 54%. With the amount of money I spent on replacement and repair over 8 years I could have gotten a nice gaming PC. :(

My PC is almost as old as the 360, but its running as well as the next gen consoles, atm. and better xD

^ Nintendo nearly killed gaming entirely at some stage dude. They might be able to survive it. but I wouldn't trust them to. Also Microsoft could easily survive it, too. They still have PCs to work with, where they could slowly re-invent gaming again on.

its funny how Nintendo is always being picked on because they're weaker in hardware. yet, without them, gaming wouldnt have continued to exist. People forget how powerful Nintendo truly is. If there was another gaming recession to happen, Nintendo could literally pick themselves up, brush the dirt off their shoulders, and re-enter the gaming business with ease. why? Because Nintendo is the only corporation that can survive it, where Sony and Microsoft would fail.

battlefield 4 and cod ghosts are running just as well on my pc as on the consoles. the interesting thing is that battlefield 4 has exactly the same multiuser bugs as the xbone which shows that the pc and the xbone share the same codebase. the xbone does after all run a version of windows 8.

He's literally calling everyone who has bought a videogame EVER a 'sheep'. I'm pretty sure every game was made by companies for them to make profit, well, I guess everybody's a sheep!

Bailey Lawrence

Any gaming device can be seen as a way to get money out of "sheep". That's the point. We buy, they sell. We like consoles. If someone releases a new console after 8 years or something, we're going to buy it. It's very insulting to call someone a sheep. There are no alternatives to these consoles besides a good gaming PC, which has the highest cost out of all 3 options. What is your problem?

if i bought an xbone or a ps4 then i would soon be bored because of the small number of games available. on my £800 gaming pc i can run most xbone and ps4 games and also nextgen versions of of most xbox 360 games.

Nintendo's consoles have each had a fatal flaw, since they went with the cartridge on the N64. The GameCube had those dumb mini-discs, and a schizophrenic controller. the first Wii had that amazingly innovative controllers, but was WAY behind graphically. the new WiiU is still behind graphically, and the controller scheme has gotten unwieldy. Also, how do you NOT bring the second most popular series in your library (Pokemon) to the home consoles? that's just money left on the table.

1) i was indeed talking about technology, not sales. 2) handhelds don't count as consoles. 3) nobody is buying the WiiU because, well, it's kind of stupid, and there are very few compelling games for not-children. 10-15 million in the next year for a console with last-gen graphic capabilities and a cumbersome and expensive controller scheme is NOT happening.

I really want Nintendo to succeed, but how can they compete when their console is less than half as powerful as the PS4 or XBone.

the Wii U is gonna fall off hard, if nintendo doesn't do something by the time Steam comes out, I could see Nintendo taking the Sega route and falling out big time

are you stupid? wii has sold 100.millions of consoles and 3ds has sold as 40 millions. wii u has sold only 5 millions but i think the next year will sell 10 or 15 millions more

there are more indie games being played on consoles than ever before. if the industry is going in the wrong direction, what exactly would you do differently?

we can't all afford to drop hundreds every year on computer upgrades to that we can be cooler-than-thou and play on PC, and the new "alternative" consoles just don't measure up. with a console i can spend a few hundred bucks and play new games for several years... decades, even.
