Microsoft promises more core first-party PC games

Corporate VP Phil Spencer says Microsoft has more Windows games in development now than it has in the past 10 years.

Just because the Xbox One is front and center right now for Microsoft, that does not mean PC has been forgotten. Speaking with Shacknews, corporate vice president Phil Spencer admitted Microsoft has not given enough attention to PC, but said this won't be the case going forward.

"I think it's fair to say that we've lost our way a bit in supporting Windows games," Spencer said. "But we're back. You'll see us doing more stuff on Windows. We probably have more individual projects on Windows than we've had in ten years at Microsoft Studios."

The games Microsoft has in the pipeline for PC are not casual or "lightweight" games, but rather titles aimed at core gamers, Spencer said.

"At the launch of Windows 8, we had about 30 games in the Windows Store. A lot of those you'd consider lightweight or casual games," he said. "But we've covered all of that property now. Now we're starting to look at bigger and core gamer things. I'm excited by that."

Overall, Spencer explained that gaming efforts on Windows have become "incredibly important" for Microsoft since outgoing CEO Steve Ballmer introduced the "One Microsoft" plan in July.

Notable upcoming Xbox One games also coming to PC include Project Spark and Titanfall.

If Microsoft and others can start making core games that work across their whole ecosystem -- Windows 8 PCs, Windows RT, WIndows Phone, and XBOX -- I think there will be some opportunities for them to regain some ground against Apple and Google on both the desktop and mobile.

If it ain't on Steam, I ain't buying. And that's not even counting the fact it has "Microsoft" on the proverbial box.

Though I don't consider ports to be "PC games," I welcome their porting more of their current Xbox exclusives to the PC.

I am so happy to hear this kind of news i now hope that Halo and Gears of Wars series come to pc Phi Spencer means by core games it means games made by Microsoft only i bet

Haha, I guess they finally realize that there are a ton of PC gamers willing to pay money for games. The notion that "all peecee gamerz are p1rates!!!!" is far from the truth. Now, release PC quality ports of Halo. And ffs, give Halo 4 an fov slider....

More Windows games than in 10 years? That's not hard to achieve, what with the PC support you've been doing. I hope they're all not trash, I prefer quality over quantity.

Please Microsoft, please bring Halo 3, Halo Reach and Halo 4 to PC! Then I promise to be a Microsoft fanboy forever!
Oh...and the Gears of War series as well!

They have done so little in years. Its to late now my loyalty is with steam. You can make  a superior product and expect it to sell itself instead you push for exclusives and windows 7/8 for ghosts for people to buy your stuff. You still do the same type of stuff. I can literally see the microsoft executive sitting in the meeting room making crappy business decisions. I hope steam takes over pc and console gaming would be best for consumers.

Now that Steam OS is coming out, I guess microosft thinks it has to do something.  PC sales are down, and Windows RT, PRO, mobile... are failing.   more OSs are coming out and Microsoft may not be able to sue them all out of existence.

"If you're backwards compatible, you're really backwards," lol its a messed up thing to say but you gotta admit its pretty funny.

More first party games on PC is probably a good thing, but from you? I don't think that is what people had in mind really.

Well~ Guess you've passed the point of no return ever since shutdown your profitable Emsemble Studio to focus on other s**t.  Now, not only Steam is in charge of PC game distribution, it is moving away from your MS Windows, while Apple and Linux (Android) is chipping away your market share!  Prepare to die the slow death you well deserve!

Oh yeah ?? then release quantum break on pc

Of course they do promises now, because they are terrified about Valve and their Steam OS. They haven't giving a shit about PC players in years! Yeah GFWL, F U MS. A PC game that requires Win 8, nah I'm gonna pass ty.

Release them on Steam and GOG instead of creating your own shitty service

Ha, yeah right. As long you can't charge PC gamers for online use you'll still be crapping on PC gaming.

Two burning questions: how much are these upcoming games going to suck and how are they going to use these upcoming games to push Windows 8?

I hope that on pc we won't have xbox controller prompts, I am really sick of seeing that.

@speedysam123 I don't see that happening unfortunately. Microsoft's biggest games will likely still be chained to the Xbox one for at least the foreseeable future. If you were just being sarcastic then please ignore my statement...thank you kindly.

@SEEDman_X ...  God I hope so.  though microsoft has a huge amount of money so it will be a very slow death march to a cliff far, far away.

@Fursnake The lame-ass Spartan Assault, their 'latest' PC game, already requires W8 to play.

@TheHH Actually I don't need/care any of those. Forza 5 and then we'll talk.

speedysam123
speedysam123

@revlux88 Yea but the thing is, halo 3 is all i really care about, and since halo 3 is slightly old, then it's not microsoft's biggest game because it's sold old. It would just get more people to play halo 3. Besides there was like 5 rumors this year about halo 3 on pc.

@Vojtass I think it means games that come out for PC, designed for PC from the ground up.

Right now most games on PC are either indies which means they can run on a toaster and last about an hour or they are console ports which means they have out of date visuals, are capped at 30fps and more often than not straight up broken due to the stupid complexity of current gen consoles and the fact PC is an after thought for most developers so they don't put that much effort into it.

The few games that are PC exclusive namely, Real Time Strategy which are a specialist target group anyway and the odd other game that no one has ever heard of before, just aren't good enough.

I mean I personally am not a massive PC gamer, I think it is way more hassle than it needs to be when there are consoles available which don't make me want to rip hair from my body because I had to troubleshoot this new game and it turns out it conflicted with AVG or some other random ass piece of shit reason that normally stops me from playing games. I just give someone in a shop some money, they give me a box which has a box inside of it, I plug that box into my TV and games happen, no messing, no hassle and above all else no building the fucking thing.

snaketus
snaketus

Well pc gamers don't want windows 8 and even less any other MS DRM shit. Windows store? Ms wants to be like Apple now? Well news flash, Apple and their shitty closed systems sucks ass. Every pc gamer that I know would ditch the windows if alternative option for gaming was in existence.

Fursnake
Fursnake

@Kjranu @Fursnake

Damn, forgot bout that one as I kept thinking it was mobile only. Well, you just gave example to the very thing that could become an awful reality.

MegaX-
MegaX-

@instigator81 @MegaX- You know, those bad ports where for example in a tutorial it says press A but that A is of the controller not the keyboard so you have to figure out what the hell A means by pressing random buttons.

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

@Vojtass You are right in that a big budget doesn't mean great game but when a game is so understated it can't even market itself properly then why should I care about it?

Marketing is like the absolute basis of selling stuff to people.

I hate strategy games personally which cuts out a hell of a lot of PC games for me. I just don't get along with them. I'm much better and making quick decisions on the fly than managing large areas and planning ahead.

I mean I have Civ 5 and get slaughtered pretty much every time on any difficulty above Easy.

But most other games tend to be on console as well or I don't think they look all that good.

You are a PC gamer, but have you never thought that you like these games because there isn't much better out to like?

revlux88
revlux88

@Dannystaples14 @Vojtass The good news is that the next gen consoles should enable much better p.c. ports. It's also good for those p.c. gamers who went with AMD. The p.c. versions of games should come out much faster as well. That's what should happen. I guess we'll have to wait and see what actually does happen.

TheFadeForever
TheFadeForever

@Dannystaples14 @Vojtass If you actually think than you know nothing about pc gaming. I'm sorry to break it to use most games I played on pc aren't capped at 30 fps.

Vojtass
Vojtass

@Dannystaples14 @Vojtass There are still many PC dedicated games. Just because they don't have big marketing and you know nothing about them, it doesn't mean they don't exist. Thinking "only AAA game = best quality and most fun" is a loss of great experiences. Rise of Flight, Miasmata, Endless Space, Sins of the Solar Empire, Civilization, Battle Worlds: Kronos etc. Next year great classic style RPGs, adventure games and Star Citizen will be released. I'm a PC gamer, because I find here every game I want. I'm a PC gamer and I am not able to consume every game I want. Next year is gonna be very hard for my wallet.

Grenadeh

@MegaX- @instigator81 Most PC games have a mod that fixes that. You could do the logical thing and use a controller for games that were meant for controller. Trust me, using MKB on games that aren't meant for MKB is a waste of time. Save it for shooters and strategy.
