Microsoft now owns XboxOne.com

After legal struggle, Microsoft lawyers take ownership of XboxOne.com and XboxOne.net.

After filing a complaint with the National Arbitration Forum in May, Microsoft now officially owns the domains XboxOne.com and XboxOne.net, according to a new report from Fusible.

The initial complaint was filed in late May, following Microsoft's official announcement of the Xbox One during a high-profile event at the company's headquarters in Redmond, Washington.

It is believed that Microsoft did not register the XboxOne.com domain earlier because doing so could have given away the name of the company's next-generation console.

Microsoft is now the only platform holder to own domain names related to its next-generation console. Sony does not own PlayStation4.com, and Nintendo does not own WiiU.com.

The Xbox One launches in November for $500.

"Microsoft has good lawyers" lol have to say that's about the least surprising news I've read on this site in a while.

and this is another reason I have never owned xbox and will never own one, only own PlayStation 3 and 4, and PC.

"After filing a complaint with the National Arbitration Forum in May, Microsoft now officially owns the domains XboxOne.com and XboxOne.net" Kids find that complaining about stuff often gets them what they want and they carry that experience with them through the rest of their lives, as this complaint shows, heh.

Good to see M$ getting the name back.

Or perhaps they did register it under this person and are now covering it up with this.

Hey gamespot, Ya hear that? That's the sound of no one caring. I'm not even trying to hate on MS here. But seriously who cares about this?

Why not just use XboxOneOfficial.com or something similar? People aren't stupid, they'll figure it out.

Microsoft is scum.  That person bought the xbone site years ago and would of had no way of knowing what the 2013 console would be named.

You people who still support the xbone make me sick.  How many dry anal rapings will people endure by this company before their childish urge to own this system dies out.

Microsoft probably ate some costs in legal fees, but whoever was squatting on the domain gained nothing for it. This happens all the time, its basic. Entities that squat on domain names without being able to leverage them and clearly having an inferior claim to them, as is the case here clearly, lost them when challenged like this, and for reasonable reasons. You can go register a thousand domains right now with Disney leading the URL and in 20 years one of them is luckily something Disney maybe thinks might be promotable, might get hits, or both? You're going to lose that domain in court. Every time.

Well MS probably did win legally if the guy made the website after the Xbox was established, but truth is, with such a heavy online fanbase and pretty good website to support it, I don't really see the point in taking the website. Unless the guy was posting something that could really damage the company (which is very unlikely) I don't really see the point. Either way, not that big of a deal.

I understand the console warring fan boy hate and what not but this is a weird article to have fights going on about. I mean it seemed like pretty run of the mill news. Nothing to even flame over, a bit boring even. Must be extra trolls out today or something. That or it is now to the point that if MS or Sony are ever mentioned in an article for any reason it means automatic war mobilization.

thats just life

People do this all the time with games. Register Final Fantasy 20 and see what happens years down the road. The only reason this is being reported on is because MIcrosoft fucked up so bad.

Some court better not have taken the domains away from an individual who owned them for nothing.  Microsoft has no more right to a website url than anyone else.

Odd they didnt mention the arrangement that was made.

Microsoft probably paid someone, i just hope it was the original owner and a judge.

TirOrah

Wait, this doesn't say anything about how they managed to get the domains. Curses! Now I don't have anything to bully Microsoft with. T_T

Come November 2013, hot on the heels of the X1 release, there will be an article with the same headline as this one, but only the first 3 words will be used.

@Alecmrhand They did take it away from the individual.  He owned it since 2011 long before anyone would ever know the name of this console.

DSCesq

@junglist101 @Oozyrat It was made. They posted a few articles which stayed there for years, never changing. Then it became a non-existent page, as it sat like that for many more years. It was a dead page used solely for unlawful purposes. They illegally owned the domain, fool.

@smashthejews No no, I should use the new version of piracy. It's called buying used games! ^^

But I really, really wanted to read here how Microsoft "won" so I could then analyze/diss it. Ever since the policy reversal I've been missing out on my Microsoft-screwing-up fix. *withdrawal*
