Microsoft now buying iPhones for $200 credit

Xbox maker to pay a minimum of $200 for "gently used" iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 smartphones.

Microsoft is not only buying iPads, but now also iPhones, the Xbox maker has announced.

The company has launched a new promotion where consumers can bring in a "gently used" iPhone 4s or iPhone 5 to receive a minimum $200 gift card to the Microsoft Store.

The promotion began today and will run through November 3. It is available at select Microsoft retail stores in the United States (including Puerto Rico) and Canada, but not online.

To be eligible for trade-in, the devices must include a power cord and not be password protected. Customers are permitted to trade in one unit only.

Microsoft began buying iPads earlier this month, giving out the same $200 credit for "gently used" iPad 2, 3, and 4 units. That promotion expires October 27.

They're taking the one thing from Apple that they made. Not fair.

Sounds like Microsoft is planning a mass killing of iPhones to video tape and put on the internet!

It would be nice if Eddie Makuch could elaborate a little more on his articles and even give his personal take on the subject in question.

Why would anyone do this? Surely you can still sell a working iphone 4s and 5 or iPads for more than $200. And you will get real money - not a gift card only valid in a MS store.

My coworker just sold his old scratched iPad 3  for around $300 converted from our currency.

haha now all that's left is mac hardware. Is anyone else bothered by how expensive that stuff is? It's insulting to regular computer hardware!

That is great!!! I'm a Sony fan but as far as phones.. I am anti-apple, lol. Everybody on here should agree as PC gamers and such.

I don't see why they would do this, and worse than that, the article did nothing to explain anything. Nice article once again.

What's the point of this? Nobody wants Windows phones and tablets, so Microsoft is going to try to make a buck anyway by reselling the competition's hardware to suckers?

@Alf eh... I just want the facts, we can have our fun speculating in the comment section.

@Muaad Saeed I would guess that they could recycle some of the parts.  Those devices are made of precious and rare metals.  For you and me, it would be difficult to extract them, but ms has factories that might be able to do that.

Plus, it takes iphones/ipads out of use and puts a Microsoft product in its place.

@27Raven Anyone considering the switch from ios to win.  There are services like gazelle that exist for people who don't want to go through the hassel of privately selling their phone.  Microsoft is just stepping in and making it even easier for people who want to move from apple to MS quickly.

@SilentAssassin Or people could not have stupid loyalties to brands and judge each product on it's own merits.

@carolino Have you heard of this OS called Windows?

Or this console called Xbox?

Or a game series called Halo?

I own both a Lumia 920 (gave away my iphons 4s to my father) and a surface pro. Both are very nice pieces of hardware.

@jcknapier711 That is freaking expensive. 200 bucks for some parts of a milligram worth rare metals. You must be crazy.

johnny_neurotic
johnny_neurotic

@Foreheadvcr @Senior_Rosa not really. People aren't going to bring in the cell phone they are using currently and they're not getting a cell phone in return. So there is no net loss to apple at all.

Senior_Rosa
Senior_Rosa

@Foreheadvcr That does make sense, but not the recycling components thing which was the statement i was fighting against ;)

Foreheadvcr
Foreheadvcr

@Senior_Rosa 200 dollars that you can only use in the Microsoft store.  So, regardless, they get the money back from you.  Microsoft gets to pull an apple product off the market and likely replace it with one of their own.  This makes complete sense - just have to actually think it through

pyro1245
pyro1245

@carolino @Flynwar HALO? The only thing Halo has to do with MS is how much money they made when MS paid them to be exclusive to Xbox instead fo Ps2. And damn if it didnt get them into the console market.
