Microsoft making Xbox tablet - Report

Sources say company building proprietary 7-inch gaming-focused tablet; will be announced before Xbox 720.

Microsoft may be getting into portable gaming. Multiple sources speaking to The Verge say the technology giant is building a proprietary 7-inch gaming-focused tablet currently called "Xbox Surface." Specifications for such a device leaked in June prior to Microsoft's official announcement of its Surface RT and Surface Pro tablet line.

What might the Xbox Surface look like? (Pictured is a Surface RT model)

The Xbox Surface is rumored to include a custom ARM processor and "high-bandwidth" RAM that is tailored with gaming in mind. The tablet will not run a full-fledged version of Windows, the sources said, but rather a custom operating system.

The Xbox Surface tablet may feature support for other tablet functionality like messaging, but the device's focus will reportedly be on gaming. As for when gamers may get a glimpse at the Xbox Surface, the source suggested it will be unveiled prior to the Xbox 720, which analysts believe will be on store shelves late next year.

A Microsoft representative said, "Microsoft does not comment on rumors or speculation."

Lol, I remember when MS first entered the console market back in 2001 and people thought they were going to fail.

Look at them now. I don't doubt MS.

I really love how some of you like talking smack on here about microsoft and the 360. You might actually get your kid brothers or cousins to belive the garb coming out of your mouths but trying to get buy this crap that knows a few things, well that;s a different story. My point is this. The XBOX is the supreme system and so will be the 720. Halo 4 is the BEST GAME EVER and you know that they are not putting Halo 5 on no tablet people, so can the talk of no future Xbox's. Ridiculous. Sony can go away tho because they suck

Someguy1212

so they are already talking about what to do after the XBOX dies. I dont see Microsoft staying in the console market much longer. The next XBOX I bet will be their last as they have no 1st party games besides Halo and Gears of War that really sell. Everything else can be played on the much better PS3 without having to worry about paying for online or having to worry about the system fucking up.

If they make it as a Windows 8 tablet with some sort of attachable controller a la the WikiPad, it could be interesting. There's no reason why we wouldn't be able to play Unreal Engine 3 games on it, like I don't know, Gears of War on the go. Could be cool.

But Microsoft you already have a portable gaming device! It's called the Surface or Surface RT.

I mean seriously, why do they keep trying to separate gaming from all-purpose devices? What in the hell?

Best mobile gaming device atm is pretty much the iPad. Apple is completely dominating the space and they completely kicked the wind out of Sony and almost got Nintendo with them. It's fine you wanna compete but you could just have put a decent graphics processor into the existing Surface RT!

I am always willing to at least entertain the idea of a new type of gaming devise - so long as it is GAMING FOCUSED.  My gut, given Microsofts recent behavior, tells me that this will not be the case, plus it will have the horrible Metro UI (assuming).  Their rumor continue to push me further and further away from their nextgen offering and back into the Sony camp (console wise).

So how will this measure against Microsoft Surface or tablets running Windows 8?

I always thought Microsoft would make a portable games device one day, good to see they skipped on the hardware wars and are taking it directly to tablets

but what about games MS? new AAA exclusives games? i love Gears and Halo but honestly am getting tired of them

this is actually something good... think of it of a way to compete with vita and wii U.. if it has similar or better graphic power than the vita it has potential.. my only wonder is the controls.. i would not like to have touchscreen controls..or maybe touchscreen controls are good idk.. just looking forward to this

this may have been a smart move on MS's part, surely the first thing people might think is "oh how unoriginal", but seriously there's more to tablet controls than just having tablet controls...

for instance, by doing this then developers have a chance to create similar designed ports of Xbox 720 and Wii U titles thus leaving the PS4 ports looking seemingly incomplete, or depending on the game they might not bother, from a strategic standpoint this was a good decision by MS in it's competition with Sony, and if Sony is forced to go tablet as well it's going to put a strain on a company that's already deep in money problems

I hope the next XBOX is not tablet based. They have a Kinect to keep and expand if they want to. You can basically mimic a touch screen in the air if given separate controller parts to complement the motions, and there´s added depth given by the camera capturing your room and the position you are in. X360 is leading the way in console standards, they dont need to play catch up to anyone.

multiple sources say that this is just a rumour. Windows phones already have access to xbox indie games so i would not be surprised if these surfaces tablets have some sort of Xbox functionality, it's probably a given,

I want something like this, only as some kind of one-type screen, with port for games, a battery, and a way to get your memory between the real xbox and the tablet.

also a controller port, or some way to hook a controller up.

Hhhmm.. interesting. I thought Microsoft wanted to hold off on the handheld game systems for awhile. That would be interesting having a gaming tablet that is compatible with the XBox 360/720 controllers. This thing is going to need a LOT of memory if you have to download all the games. Would be great for XBLA games though. Unveiling at E3 maybe?

if this is true then i this is an instant purchase for me

jtthegame316

interesting. it will need to be cheaper than surface though i mean i would like to buy a surface but they are like £400 near enough. if i could access the games i downloaded off xbox live for the xbox with this tablet that would be cool and convince me to buy but i would want a lower than 399 price point.

This is actually a brilliant idea.

A Surface tablet that plays Xbox games and can connect to controllers.

I see no downside. :)

Valen_Ca
Valen_Ca

Doesn't surprise me, not after they put the Surface out anyways, I am however surprised that they would go with ARM, not because ARM is bad or anything but because it would lock out the currently available XBLM games unless their creators re-compiled for the new chip. I mean you would think that if they were going to call it Xbox it would link back to the console somehow.

It is going to be purely touch screen?

Dark_Arcitekt

All well and good until... THE BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH appears. Sorry I can't help but poke fun at MS when it comes to how wonderful their current console holds up. I can't even remember how many 360s I have replaced.

lemme guess it will be compatible with xbox as tablet controller how unique is that and how inovative where i had seen it before?

Final suggestion:  (Microsoft) -  Hire me for your games business.

Sweendrix
Sweendrix

One other suggestion:  Keep the controller seperate from the tablet unless you are going to offer an incredible warranty on this gaming version of the tablet.  Nothing would suck more than having a $400-$500 dollar video game system rendered useless by a faulty analog stick or trigger button.

Sweendrix

If Microsoft really wants to make a big splash, give this "gaming tablet"  video editing functionality and the ability to capture footage from cameras in uncompressed HD live and on location.  I guarantee that this would almost assure that gamers (and there are quite a few of them) in the indie film-making scene would pick up the unit.  It's hard to find a descent editing system on a budget.  Video game consoles pack plenty of power for editing compressed video.  I cannot even count the number of times over the past few years that I have wished that I could tap the power of my Xbox 360 for basic editing.  Why not give the video game crowd something that the indie film-making crowd something that they would not only enjoy, but could use as a tool for creativity?  If Microsoft were to check Youtube...they would find plenty of cross-over in the indie film/video game crowds.  It seems like a no-brainer to me.

I think the nextBox will come with a tablet bundle, which is the 7" tablet. So perhaps the specifications are the specifications of the console, not the tablet. Perhaps this is because bundling it with a Surface Tablet would make it too expensive.

Microsoft + Gaming focused in the same sentence I almost spat up a lung laughing.

Don't worry people, I do not think Microsoft would release a portable gaming system without physical buttons, whether that's through a wireless controller or on-tablet buttons. I hope it's practical though. It's hard to make a practical gaming tablet.

ummm to all the people complaining about touch controls.. you do know it would be an XBOX surface which im pretty sure that means you can connect an XBOX controller to it.. just like with the regular surface out now u can.

Id like to what they have up their sleeves and if it can be really unique like the surface then i'm all for seeing what this can be and how it can possible be integrated in the 720

 @Someguy1212 You can't serious are you?I own both PS3 and Xbox 360 and as far as gaming is involved, my 360 perform much better.Overall i prefer my PS3,but console are supposed to be meant to play games.I was a bit deceived this generation since i always prefered Sony consoles but i do hope Sony focus on making their console a bit less proprietary next generation so dev gets a better interest or easier(and thus,better) multi-platform adaptation.

Someguy1212
Someguy1212

 @steelmouth

 They probably never will make any new AAA games. Heck they havent really had any AAA games in years. The new Halo is probably the last AAA game they will ever have. I mean unless they make a console Flight Simulator, which I admit would be pretty cool

 @Gothic-360

 The Wii U is NOT a portable :/ Just about anything can beat the Vita. Its already dying. In Japan its having some better luck but here in the US there is NOTHING worth the price tag of well over $300 after buying everything needed to play.

Someguy1212
Someguy1212

 @l3igl3oss

 The 360 has been playing catch up since day one of this generation. for several years after launch it was plagued with the RRoD. The Wii lead the way for the first 2 or so years then the PS3 took over. The 360 was actually advertised as "Quieter". WTF?!?! You have to brag about how the new version is quieter? That's just sad. The system is STILL having issues with reliability though not as much as launch models. The Kinect sold well but since then its been a bomb. There is nothing for it and nothing ever will come for it. The next Kinect will suck just as much as the first one. Microsoft and high standards dont mix. I mean the 360 is great if you need to heat a large area of your room.

Someguy1212

 @scottyboy254

 You mean something like Nintendo is ALREADY doing? Dont worry Microsoft will just copy them and do it worse like they did the Kinect (Eyetoy) and their XBL avatars (Mii)

Bluetooth is the answer to connecting a controller. A la PS3.

 Well it isn't clear if it is a portable gaming device or a "at home" gaming device ... if it is portable ... it sounds too much like the failliur of the Nintendo Virtual Boy ...

That defeats te purpose of a handheld you fuck face, who's going to go about town holding an xbox controller all day? It certainly doesn't fit in any of my pockets and it's more awkward than carrying a tablet around.

  yeah. i liked both of them. but to me 360 felt more like a gaming system to me specially  wth all the good arcade ames they had this gen.  i have a ton on m 360 hard drive ps3 s mostly filled with game data that i had to install to even play most ps3 games.
