Microsoft gifts free Xbox One game Killer Instinct to some users

Xbox Live account owners with a high Gamerscore are eligible for free Xbox One game.

Microsoft has gifted select Xbox Live users a full copy of upcoming Xbox One fighter Killer Instinct.

"You're a fan of ours and we're a fan of yours," says the e-mail sent to some Xbox owners, "Thank you for your dedication to Xbox."

The company has confirmed that Gamerscore and the age of a user's Xbox Live account are factors in whether they will be receive the promotion.

Another e-mail will be sent later in November with instructions on how to redeem the gift.

Killer Instinct, a revival of Rare's original 90s fighting series, will be free-to-play. The game will come with one character, Jago, unlocked. The bundle unlocking all characters will be sold for $19.99.

Microsoft has offered numerous incentives to encourage customers to purchase an Xbox One, including free copies of FIFA 14 or Forza Motorsport 5 to those who preordered the Day One Edition in Europe.

The Xbox One will be released on November 22.

People are something else.  Microsoft has every right to continue to take our money in exchange for services and has absolutely no obligation to give us anything for free, give us a discount, or even say thank you.  Now, you will get a free game on day one with your brand new XONE, no requirements, nothing.  If you wait you will eventually get all the characters for free, and some of us are getting them free immediately.  This is a brilliant idea and I appreciate very much.  Microsoft: thank you for entertaining me and for thanking me by giving me free stuff in addition the great games I pay you for!

What defines a Valued Xbox Customer?

Like most Xbox lovers I found myself as giddy as a little kid at Christmas when I heard the Xbox One was being released this year. I have been a loyal Xbox player from the beginning with the original Xbox, and continue to play nothing else up until this day. It’s hard to beat a day of playing COD or Halo on the best gaming network around “Xbox Live”. I have been a paying member since the day I stood in line for more than 18 hours to pick up my 360 at a launch event at a local Best Buy.

Through the years, my kids and I have been through a number of 360 units due to the Red Ring of Death errors. We stood by the product even though the manufacturer would not stand by us. Even while friends jumped ship to the PS3, we stood remained true.

The day the Xbox one was announced I ran to my local Gamestop and gladly threw $300.00 on the counter to reserve 3 units for my kids and I. Then came the “Dark Days” as I like to call them. The DRM disaster reared its ugly face in the headlines. Lots of people jumped ship and started to praise the PS4. My kids and I continued to stand firm with our selection. Next came the Kinect “Always On” issues and privacy advocates were in a uproar. We continued to stand strong to our commitment.

Supposedly both these issues are now fixed, by Microsoft reversing their stance on DRM and allowing customers to deactivate or turn off the Kinect. They have also started a nice PR move by allowing “Valued Customers” a free digital pass for the Killer Instinct game and all its characters. I applaud Microsoft for their steps to try and rectify their mistakes, but we are left with a couple of issues that don’t sit well.

I think it’s great that people are no longer required to use the Kinect if they don’t want to, but why make them pay for something they will never use? By doing so they are forcing the customer to buy something they do not want just to get the Xbox One. How can a company say you don’t have to use our add-on, but you still have to buy it? This brings me to my biggest issue thus far. How is Microsoft determining who their “Valued Customers” are? How are they going to tell me that I am not a valued customer when I have stood by them through thick and thin? This does not only apply to me but also the millions of others who will not receive the incentive that Microsoft is allowing others. This is like a slap in the face of everyone who stood by them through thick and thin. Who is running their PR department and why are they so out of touch with their customers?

At this point it is really getting old and makes me wonder if we really can trust Microsoft to put the customer first anymore. It may be to late to book a “Day One PS4”, but it definitely isn’t to late to cancel the “Xbox Ones”. After all, the 360 still seems to be going strong. With a rash of new releases, including Titanfall in the Spring.

The way the message is written, it just looks like their unlocking some characters rather then giving you the full game.

Considering they are giving out a game that promotes user to further purchase characters, this equates drug dealer giving you drugs for free.

Sure it is free the first time, but when the habit kicks in, that is where they get you.

Give me the new Halo, and i might consider that a goodwill gesture.

I won't ever buy an XB1--seriously, ever--but Microsoft giving out free games is a friendly gesture that XB1 owners will surely enjoy.

I received this promo a day or two ago.  Don't really have an interest in the game, and I won't have an Xbox One for quite a while, but free is free.  Maybe it'll surprise me and be a pretty slick game.

So they think that because you have been a xbl user for so long and your gamer score is so high that this proves you will buy the xbox one. What a joke, been a member for 7 years and yea my score is around 40k since I'm busy with the wife, kids, college, and oh yea work to make money to buy the new systems (yea both since I'm not a fan boy, I'm a gamer guy). Do I hope I get the email..... HELL NO, didn't like the first won't like this one besides like everyone says what good is a free game that is free. Instead of all these gimmicks to sale the one put the effort in the system to make it worth the price or at least make Tao Feng 2.

It was around that time that I realised the free game was really the Loch Ness Monster. I said "DAMNIT MONSTER!" get off my TV, I aint givin you no four hundred and fiddy dollars.

ive been a member of xbox live for 10 years since the original xbox. i have over 100k achivements and bought pretty much every xbox exclusive game that cam out. i got the code in my email and was pretty happy seeing how i was planing on buying it anyway as me and all my friends loved the one on the 64.

my brother who had the same stats as i do (10 years and over 100k) didn't get an email :(. i think once you meet the criteria its random weather you will be selected or not.

I agree this is rediculous we should all get this especially people who are trying the xbox for the first time Poor business practice in my opinion. Then it would be easier to justify the extra hundred dollars for less of a system.

Well that's not fair. Micro$haft shouldn't be giving away games for free to the people who have no lives while the rest of us who have jobs and families are actually contributing to society.

This game looks good, but I really don't think it's going to be too successful.  Not as much as I'd like, anyways.  As far as I know, the only offline modes it will have are Versus and Training.  That's it.  An online mode with six characters to choose from.  That's it.  Not to mention the limited customization that casuals have come to love.  Casuals account for far more sales of a fighting game than one would like to admit.  The fact it was a niche game back in the day doesn't help its case, either.

Mr_Big_Boss

So they're giving away a free to play game for free?

Pretty ridiculous how many haters are hear hating on xbox but of course you are here reading there info correct... lames. And actually this is an $80 value now go calculate how many they are giving out and add it up you probably cant count that highlol.

Blah blah blah free to play is pay to win, yadda yadda yadda.  Unless I'm missing something, the unlock code for all the characters is $19.99.  What else of significance can they sell you?  What, would you rather pay $59.99 for the same thing as a boxed copy?

Honestly I don't know why this is called free to play, unless I'm missing something.  For me, free to play is chalk full of microtransactions and the goal is to get you to continuously fork out money as you play.  This is a fighting game.  Unlocking all the characters is $19.99.  What else can they sell you?  Costumes and silly things like that?  Capcom does that with DLC for Street Fighter 4.  I think they should've just called the base game with a playable Jago a "multiplayer demo" that's hooked into the same multiplayer experience as people who bought the Xbox Live Arcade game.

@arcee360 If you or your kids in the lifetime of your Xbox 1 say "xbox on" and it turns on you used your Kinect... Don't look at gaming when thinking of  voice and motion control look at telecom.  Voice and motion command/capture are going to be very prevalent in the upcoming years and you are getting ahead of the game with a Xbox one.  I think everyone will be glad they have mandatory Kinects in a few years.

If you are complaining about anything in the Xbox 1 I would complain about the GPU... It wont compete with PS4's later in the generation.  Where Xbox has PS4 beat is the Kinect and media integration, if you purchased the Xbox One purely for gaming it is my opinion you bought the wrong console. Right now for gaming I wouldn't purchase either as games are lacking IMO.

@arcee360 I feel your pain.  I think I have been an XBOX Live Gold member for more than seven straight years now.  Admittedly, I don't have as much time to play videogames as some people, and my Gamerscore isn't the highest, but I have supported Microsoft's efforts in entertainment pretty consistently.

Regarding the Kinect, I'm actually glad that Microsoft is making it mandatory.  That's the only way to give developers the confidence that they can support it.  Would the Wii have succeeded if the Wii remote were optional?  That's why motion-controlled gaming is an afterthought on the PS4.

Hopefully we'll soon see some perks from Microsoft for our long-standing support

@ratchet200 KI is free to play, you can get it and have Jago unlocked. You can then pay to unlock singular players or pay 20 to unlock them all. The F2P model for KI was released about 3-4 months ago and is not new news.  Giving away all the charactors is.

TabularBeast

@Mr_Big_Boss You could either get the game free with only 1 out of the 8 characters unlocked and then you have to buy each character separate or buy the full game for $20. So no, they are giving away the full game for free.

@izTamz The free copy comes with all the characters. ....jackass. Try actually reading.
