Microsoft gifts free Xbox One game Killer Instinct to some users

Xbox Live account owners with a high Gamerscore are eligible for free Xbox One game.

Microsoft has gifted select Xbox Live users a full copy of upcoming Xbox One fighter Killer Instinct.

"You're a fan of ours and we're a fan of yours," says the e-mail sent to some Xbox owners, "Thank you for your dedication to Xbox."

The company has confirmed that Gamerscore and the age of a user's Xbox Live account are factors in whether they will be receive the promotion.

Another e-mail will be sent later in November with instructions on how to redeem the gift.

Killer Instinct, a revival of Rare's original 90s fighting series, will be free-to-play. The game will come with one character, Jago, unlocked. The bundle unlocking all characters will be sold for $19.99.

Microsoft has offered numerous incentives to encourage customers to purchase an Xbox One, including free copies of FIFA 14 or Forza Motorsport 5 to those who preordered the Day One Edition in Europe.

The Xbox One will be released on November 22.
