Microsoft's top Xbox boss, Phil Spencer, has spoken out to say that while the Xbox One enjoyed a strong end to 2014 (it outsold the rival PS4 in the US for November and December), there is more work to do.

Writing on Twitter, Spencer thanked Xbox fans for their support, attributing their faith in the Xbox brand as the key element in helping Microsoft turn the tide.

"PS4 is also doing very well. Console and game sales are strong, which is a good thing for the industry" -- Phil Spencer

"Most important thing was Xbox fans sticking with us, they kept believing," Spencer said. "More work to do but it was a good holiday."

Another fan pointed out that, even though the Xbox One outsold Sony's console for the final two months of the year, in fact, the PS4 was the top-selling system overall for all of 2014.

Spencer replied: "PS4 is also doing very well. Console and game sales are strong, which is a good thing for the industry."

Microsoft has not announced a new Xbox One sales number since November 2014, when the company said shipments of the system were approaching 10 million units. It's possible we'll hear a new number next week when Microsoft reports its latest earnings on January 26.
