Microsoft demonstrates code redemption via Kinect

Microsoft shows off how functionality works on next-generation console.

Microsoft previously confirmed that the Xbox One can scan codes using the new Kinect camera, removing the need for manual entry. Now, the company has demonstrated this functionality in real time.

Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb demoed the functionality today in a Vine. He says, "Xbox, Use Code," and after placing the code in front of the camera, it appears in a matter of seconds.

The Xbox One launches on November 22 for $500.

For more on some of the system's launch titles, check out GameSpot's just-published previews for Forza 5, Ryse: Son of Rome, and Dead Rising 3.

I wonder if this will work with that tiny code printed on the Gamestop and BestBuy receipts...

Very fast, it only took 7 seconds!!

Great potential for fantasy card games, Skylanders, or even Pokemon type games :)

Wow.....i was undecided before, now....Xbox One is my console of choice.

All i want in the new generation is the ability to redeem codes really really fast....games are for morons, redeeming codes fast is the future. Now, i understand, this is why Krapnetic is in every XBone.

/Sarcasm

What i find hilarious is the pure pride on Major Nelson's face, i bet he is thinking "Sony can't do this, this is the future, this is the reason why we have the cloud, this is rocket science level stuff"

Wow! Microsoft making gamers more and more lazy, the Pixar vision in Wall-E its coming!

Cool feature, but tbh I had my console for like 6 years and I've only used like 5-6 codes so...

Haters gona hate.

I'm a PlayStation guy but that feature is handy as hell, punching in the codes can be a bit tedious.  That said, scanning QR codes with Kinect still doesn't really justify the £80 difference between the consoles :P  Camera is still yet to be proved in terms of actually gaming quality (which to be honest I don't think can ever be fulfilled without a Virtual Reality headset to go with it).

Both systems will pretty much play the same games anyway and the PS4 is the cheaper option.  It's just opinions though!  Halo guys and gals are going to stick with MS, Naughty Dog fans stick with Sony.

That's pretty nifty. Still not interested in the slightest in buying the system, or in ever using Kinect for anything, but I must admit that's nifty.

yeeee like we really going to use that functionality.....pffft

This code has indulged in sin, be absolved by the power of Kinect.

Cool that will be better than having to type in the damn codes. I already use the same feature in itunes where it uses my built in web camera to read the code and it works pretty well.

they want to make it as easy as possible for you every time you turn on the xbone and it ask for your credit card before you watch TV.

The NSA approves this article and encourages everyone to buy a xbone.

SWEET. No more typing a 20 plus digit alphanumerical code with a dang controller! 20 digit codes plagued this generation. NO MORE!!

FallenOneX
FallenOneX

By the time I say "XBOX On", wait for it to boot, then say "Xbox, use code", I could have typed it in already. Further proof the next gen is catering towards lazier gamers first and foremost.

Must be the new xbone Kinect fitness game they've been secretly developing for the Kinect...lol. He looks like a robot turning at just the right interval, with his arms at the right height. God man, why not integrate this into smartglass so we can scan with our phones or tablet. Seems like another failed attempt to justify superkinect.

I hated!!! I just care about the game, not this gimmick nonsense.

In 8years time we'll be spitting if consoles don't have newer or better features! Just go back 8years and think of our phones then!

We always have a spit at new things but then we actually try it and think oh that's cool! Then if the next one doesn't have we go "oh where's this feature and why can't it do this anymore!"

Exactly why Apple is so far ahead they sell not very well made lower spec hardware with tones of better features and the market eats it up!

Samsung on the other hand has better made products with far better specs and they're selling for margins cheaper but at the end of the day doesn't have as many features and is only trailing behind!

Just proves features are what people want and even if we're telling ourselves we don't we always end up with the thing we get more out of regardless of what we think is cheaper..cause cheaper doesn't mean anything when something that costs more has more features and something "more" catches the eye of the buyer!

Tell me one thing the Apple products can't do or have shoved into it?

I think it's pretty awesome, saves me time from typing 25 digits. If the haters really can say it's unneeded then I truely believe they're lying. No one wants to type those damn codes out.

Good Feedbackula topic.  Here we have a nice, new feature for the X1.  Is it an awesome feature that will change the world of gaming?  No, of course not, but it's still nifty and (assuming it works) is undeniably a good thing.   And yet the console warriors STILL try to spin it!  I'm starting to wonder if these "fanboys" and "haters" might actually be a bunch of folks in a Marketing 101 course.

This kind of stuff was supposed to happen with the original Kinect.

Apparently Microsoft decided to join Nintendo in the gimmick war. $100 well spent right there Microsoft! Oh wait.

But can it scan a code some one tattoos to their ass?

Despite all the features of both systems that are unavailable at launch and will be available with a patch later, it's funny how the purely profit making features (scanning dlc codes, pre-paid cards and xbox live codes) all seem to work great at launch.

It's awesome. Let's now wait for Sony to announce the same thing. lol!!

@Evil_Sidekick What are you on about? Xbox plays games just fine.... If you're seriously sitting there believing you're getting the best gaming experience possible through the playstation4, you're kidding yourself. If you want games, go build a PC. It just makes no sense that PS4 has brought little to the table except a mediocre gaming experience opposed to PC's.

You sure did destroy xbots with that comment. You're so hard core and gangsta with the nonsensical way you type and post comments.

Altazen

@FallenOneX 1.  you sound so much like an idiot.  you say it like you don't need to turn on your PS or PC and then run the program to type in the code.

2.   are you comparing keyboard with controller?

3.  I guess you haven't heard of the word convenient.

4.  since when more functions is a bad thing? don't like it don't use and just use other functions which you bought the device for.

5.  further proof Xbox haters are dumb.

arqe

@daemonproject You cannot reason with them. No need to try.

People ignore all the features that Xbox One can do but Ps4 cant and doesnt support but blames Kinect for that extra 100$.

I rather pay and buy 500$ console with tons of more features with extra controller , cant just pay 400$ for nothing.

drsw36

@immortality20it takes like 10 seconds to tap with the Keyboard. People are just lazy.

Altazen

@SIDEFX1 LMAO.  face recognition and voice control.  would be so funny ps4 fanboys complaining about the kinect being a spycam and then they get this TV which is more worse than the kinect in terms of spying and cost in the thousands.

dmastor
dmastor

@SIDEFX1 Funny it will be moving with the times since even cable boxes do voice and face recognition and PS4 doesn't

daemonproject
daemonproject

@SIDEFX1 $3000 - $4000 Tv's for those features aren't going to be the norm for the average person! 32" 3D LED Full HD TV worth $800 is more the price range for people that most likely already have something of that kind then spending such ridiculous amounts for those new TV features...and then the cost of a console which TV's cannot do at all, I'm talking gaming!

If I didn't already have a massive TV I'd be more likely to want to buy a new TV for $800 and an XONE to have all that for a 1/4 the price of just the TV to have those features you deem okay just for the TV to have but a console is so bad?

I'd hate to not have all the features my phone has now compared to 8yrs ago!

rasterror
rasterror

@SIDEFX1 Are you that desperate to spew your fanboyism?  Or are you just so insecure with your PS4 purchase or not being able to get one at all that you have to spout stupidity just to make yourself feel better?

hellgast0

@MrMojoRisin70 I think there's more behind it than we think.

Scanning a QR-code isn't hard and the voice commands are already established (but still in constant development). If they push out features that don't work like they should, doesn't that look worse than delaying those features?

arqe

@blackace Actually it would be more like "Anthing you can do , i wont support or it will not available and come with patch later on!"

@Altazen I buy a card at Gamestop, I input the code there on my phone. How's that for convenience? My point is that while a nice feature, it's nothing to really brag about. And yes, XBL is one of my "most visited" places on my phone, so i don't have to do more than 2 swipes to get to it.

What confuses me is why I have to be an "Xbox hater" just because I don't fall on my knees and thank MS for everything little thing they're doing with the XB1?

warhawk-geeby
warhawk-geeby

@dmastor Errrrr yeah.. about that...... The PS4 voice control capabilities work through the standard earphone mics (don't even need an extra peripheral for that feature), the camera however then allows motion control and facial recognition.

I don't mind people sharing opinions, but when you're trying to argue a point at least attempt to do a little research beforehand.  Look a bit daft otherwise.

Then again... The Gears of War profile picture just screams Xbox fanboy so i'll just let you off.  Narrow-minded folk.

blackace
blackace

@freedom01 They need to do a commercial with Sony & Microsoft next, because this is exactly what's going to happen. I bet money on it.

kingliono
kingliono

@warhawk-geeby @dmastor Isn't that the same as saying that PS4 doesn't do motion control and facial recognition? After all no one is buying the camera so you don't get those features do you?

It seems more like Nintendo standing in the back saying "what about me, I'm next generation."
