Various Xbox executives and team members speak out to praise Sony for recent launch of next-generation console.

Microsoft has spoken out to congratulate Sony on the recent launch of the PlayStation 4, with various Xbox executives and team members praising their rival last night on Twitter.

"Congrats to the PS4 team on the launch of the PlayStation 4," Microsoft Studios corporate vice president Phil Spencer said, calling out Sony executives Jack Tretton, Shuhei Yoshida, and Adam Boyes by name.

Meanwhile, Xbox director of product planning Albert Penello said, "Congrats to all my friends @PlayStation and [Adam Boyes] and [Shuhei Yoshida] on the launch of PS4. Great job, looking forward to Gen8!"

In addition, Xbox Live director of programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb said, "Congratulations to @PlayStation on their North American launch. cc [Shuhei Yoshida] and [Adam Boyes]."

The praise was reciprocated, with Yoshida responding, "Thanks, Larry. Your turn next week!," while Boyes said, "Thanks, Larry. Good luck next week!"

The Xbox One launches next Friday, November 22. Microsoft will hold midnight launch parties across the world, including marquee events in New York City and Los Angeles featuring concerts from Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (NYC) and Deadmau5 (Los Angeles).

GameSpot will have more video and written content on the Xbox One leading up to launch. Keep checking back for more.

Congratulations on releasing a gaming console people actually want is what they meant to say.

I don't know why it's so hard for some people to believe Microsoft would congratulate Sony and be honest about it.  They aren't super rivals like in the SNES/Gensis days because neither of these companies need video game systems to stay afloat anyway, they have enough other products making them millions. Remember Microsoft initially lost a lot of money on the original Xbox and it didn't even matter because they made it all up in cell phone sales. LOL

I can see the scepticism with these congratulations being made so publicly but its still good to see the sentiment being expressed even if it was a marketing decision.

Shame the same can't be said about the comments on this site.

"Nice try" says the fanboys before resuming the trolling wars...!

This fanboy war has been really stupid from the get-go. If anyone seriously believes that these comments are "fake" or "insincere" are just ignorant. It's okay to be ignorant, if you're a child. People need to drop this stupid fanboyism and actually take the time to relish the fact that this competition is great but we can all act in a respectful manner (as Microsoft and Sony do).

I think that even opposite sides can house their differences for a few. Footballers on opposite teams don't really hate the players on the other team..
Smooth start for the console or not, the launch games are pretty terrible. The Xbox One has the stronger first party line up

It's funny how naive people are. So Microsoft congratulated Sony, now what? Now they deserve respect and standing ovations? It's just a trick to appear humane and respectful. It wouldn't do them much good if they wrote "We hope your system fails" or by acting as if nothing happened. These are worthless corporate tricks. The same would go for any company, I do not speak as a Microsoft-hater.

Pfftttt Nintendo will come creeping from the dark to fart on both companies. Funny thing is, no one knows it yet LOL

Good on Microsoft and Sony I say, it goes to show you can be competitors but also friends and that's what gaming is all about friendship and having lots of fun.

It's good for any company to have a healthy competition at the market. Microsoft had to share some of it's codes and even invest money on competing firms to avoid some drastic anti-monopoly lawsuits regarding Windows OS and many others softwares.

All these Xbots and Sony Fanboys arguing, and their creators are acting like the bested of buddies! Too bad it won't carry down to the fans.

....

What is this? Sportsmanship? Maturity? Mutual respect?

I....I don't understand...

They're acting like...well mannered adults...

To make such a genuine gesture of respect is just...unexpected

Is Microsoft actually trying to make the world a better place?

Sony and Microsoft, together, hold a monopoly on the console market. With Nintendo sales not up to par, them being respectful to each other draws people that aren't in the console demographic and who fell off of the Nintendo train to buy their product. People who are also respectfully appreciative see that quality and contemplate supporting a company who does the same. And they realize this. On top of that, they hold such a huge monopoly that they could care less whether the other fails or not. In the end, they both make insane amounts of money. Competition also sparks fanboys and loyalty, which in turn drive said people to buy their respectful favored company's product.

Don't be surprised when they smear each other one day, then congratulate each other another. There's no war, and there's no friendship. It's all money.

In the video's preview image, I see the kinect peeking over the left guy's shoulder, as if to say to a Portal turret voice: "I see you.  Hello."

Real or faking it, at least they can be civil to each other, their fanboys could learn a thing or two from them.

Publicity stunt...both companies play the oh we're so respectable card, sales go up for both...remember how vicious they were to each other back at E3?...don't worry they will rinse and repeat these tactics, its just big business...

@cf_Kage Ya somewhat regret buying the ps4 when thinking about immediate happiness ( killer instinct , Dr 3 and with a price drop , Ryze ) but i see the ps4 future as the brightest one .

Hopefully i m right  :)

@souther_hill For what its worth, I think these comments are mostly genuine. Both sides know that their personal feelings about the other team will have no impact on the sales of either console. Each obviously thinks that their console is the better one, but above all they know the immense amount of work involved in creating, manufacturing and preparing for launch of these consoles. They have nothing to gain or lose in making these comments, so I think it just comes down to respect for the effort these individuals and teams have put in.

@Cozm1kaos 3.9 million units sold a year into it's life? PS4 will hit that by the end of the year if they have enough units manufactured. the wii may have owned the last gen but the wii u is just a faint bad odour in the corner.

@Lionheart199020

1) IF you think Microsoft statement is legit , reconcider please.

2) What kind of monopoly you talking about. Monopoly is if only 1 exists in a market. Talking about monopoly then you mentioning 2 totally different companies with nothing in common , 1 in USA and the other in Japan... is ridiculous to say the least.

 3) You think Sony didnt care about PS3 sales ?!!? What insane amounts of money you talking about ?!! Sony is on a serious loss of billions while PS3 is one of the biggest reasons for this loss. The loss situtation was so serious that they even had on sale their biggest building in Tokyo if i remember right. So what the heck you talking about ?!

4) Its all money but theres a war also. Dont get distracted by a clever  msg from Microsoft. Its just PR talking.  War is coming and be prepared.

FranklynStreet

@Lionheart199020 Also, the majority of games these days are third party games.  If either console were to fail, it would significantly hurt the business third party developers could do, and would result in the failing of many games and the closing of many companies.  That would, in turn, mean fewer games for the other console, which would significantly hurt their overall business as well.

Whatever console you prefer, all console gamers are much better off if both companies succeed as much as possible.

xanthic09
xanthic09

@franky111 boooo, because sony cares so much about you right? Hahah they are both just companies trying to make money. And poeple complain when microsoft was pushing DRM then they complain when they reverse it. Gamers can get their panties in a twist about anythig.

Warlord_Irochi

@jophy @KBABZ It's called "professional respect" and it's common inside both first and third parties. So yes, they are genuine (Ubisoft employee here with lots of good friends and colleagues in EA and Activision. It was the same when I was on Nintendo, in Germany with the guys at Sony in UK)

So yes, this "console warrior" bullshit and stupidity is only made up by zealot fanboys.

Warlord_Irochi
Warlord_Irochi

@AzatiS
1) Write correctly, please
2) First part is correct but... Nothing in common? yes, sure... nothing aside of being companies that manufacture consoles??? (really dude...)
3) Outdated: http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/09/sony-posts-458m-fiscal-2012-net-profit-forecasts-5m-portable-s/
4) The war is only a made-up bullshit in the fanboys head. There has always been COMPETITION but always with professional respect in the industry, believe it or not (Been working in the industry for almost 6 years already) the only one throwing BS was Reggie from Nintendo because... dunno, maybe he through he was funny or something.

Right.. I like both consoles. I've owned both Microsoft and Sony systems for years. I lovedmy ps3 andmy 360 for differentreasons. I'm no fanboy. But maybe if gamers didn't throw temper tantrums we would have gotten the full story. I think Microsoft was trying to do something different and all the people who can't see past physical discs cried the sky is falling. We never got any clarification on how it would work. family sharing sounded awesome. Do I think all of it was great? No. But I didn't overreact like a school girl either. And if you think Sony wasn't thinking of doing something similar your naive. They already found drm in their TOS. Sony just saw what happened to Microsoft and quickly reverted and played the savior of drm. So all I'm trying to say is that neither are your friend. They both are trying to make money. It's business. And Sony spun it to their interest.
