MIA Battlefield PC games officially canceled

The Battlefield franchise racked up two more confirmed kills today, as DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson acknowledged something many gamers had long assumed. In a post on the official Battlefield blog, Troedsson confirmed that PC versions of 2009's Battlefield 1943 and last year's Onslaught add-on for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 had been canceled.

"While we'll continue supporting Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and previous games, it's time to look ahead to the next giant leap for DICE: the release of Battlefield 3, powered by the mighty Frostbite 2 engine," Troedsson wrote.

Battlefield 1943 launched on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in July of 2009. At the time, EA had expected to roll out the downloadable multiplayer shooter on PCs in September of that year.

The wait for Onslaught mode in the PC edition of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 hasn't been quite as long, with the add-on launching for consoles last June. The downloadable add-on lets up to four players engage in a variety of objective-based missions for the first-person shooter, with squad performance timed and tracked via co-op leaderboards.
