Metro Redux Dev Explains Why It's Not Offered as Free Upgrade to Owners of Original Games

"We know this response will not please everyone."

If you already own Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light for the PC you might be wondering why developer 4A Games isn't offering the Redux versions of the games for free, especially since the latter came out just a little over a year ago.

The short answer is that 4A has put a ton of work into the Redux versions of the games, which significantly improve both their gameplay and graphics.

"Almost the entire team of around 80 people at 4A Games will have been working on the Metro Redux titles for almost a year by the time we release next month," 4A said in a post to Metro 2033 Redux's Steam Community page.

As illustrated clearly by a recent comparison video, it has been a substantial project for 4A, with the main goals of significantly updating the 4A Engine, updating both games to run on it, and adding a host of new gameplay features and content.

4A admits that the Metro 2033 Redux, which came out in 2010, is a far more significant upgrade over the original than Metro: Last Light Redux. However, 4A thinks that offering the Redux versions of the game for a 50 percent discount if you already own the originals is a fair deal. It said it considered other deals, like offering a 75 percent discount on Metro: Last Light Redux if you bought the DLC, but that this raised a number of practical and logistical challenges. Patching the games was also impossible for technical reasons (changes in the Redux versions required dropping 32-bit support).

"We know this response will not please everyone," 4A said. "But even though you still might not agree with the rationale, we do hope you understand that our goal was to reward, not exploit, existing owners while still making a viable business model that allowed this Redux project to go ahead on PC as well as console."

The 50 percent discount, which takes the price of each Redux version of the down from $25 to $12.50, is available only to those who bought the game for PC. The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of the games will be sold for $25 each or as $50 bundle.

Metro Redux launches on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on August 26.

What are the Redux versions of the Metro games worth to you? Let us know in the comments below.

I wouldn't mind paying for the upgrades if in fact I was offered the discount, but when I go to purchase the bundle on Steam where I own both games, it is asking me for $49.98 which is a far cry from $12.50 each....

I own everything of Metro games I wanted. If anything, I'm just considering getting 2033 redux. For support and for giving myself a treat in equal measure.

I don't really mind, but I think one small thing that's being left out is the fact that all this work on the engine will probably also go towards future games which will themselves make money.

Because we made this remaster to make some easy extra money. What more is there to explain? they are not a charity organization.

Not a bad deal by any means. Still, lets hope that console gamers start seeing this kind of thing sooner rather than later.

Greed, that's why.  CD Projekt Red offered Witcher Enhanced Edition upgrades to everyone who bought the original, even though it took them a year to finish it after launch.

Either you care about your customers, or you care about money.  Don't lie to us.

I'll admit the redux does looks really beautiful, but I found these games to be lacking in gameplay and story. Sure, it's pretty but so were crysis 2/3. There has to be more than good looks.

why would this be free to previous owners? Has any other HD re-release ever done that? Who expected this to be free? dafuq

Play 2033 with the engine and shooting mechanics (which put me off the game) of Last Light? ok I can part with a few quid.

Just for those who want to see parallel to real world situations. The only thing it has to do with the real world situation is that the Ukraine is currently having difficult problems because Russia blocked all imports after the revolt against corrupt Yanukovic. In real life, there are neither fascists nor communists in either ethnic Russian rebel or Ukrainian forces. Both sides just use propaganda of whatever they consider great in their own past, as it happens in every conflict. After the revolt, Putin was angry because his bargain went wrong and rallied ethnic Russian insurgents with propaganda, weapons and people from the Russian side of the border. He used the fact that some overly nationalists clowns were also represented in the Ukrainian provisory unity government and made it sound their position would be official government policy. Basicly they made Foxnews like fear-propaganda.Basicly remove the word Obama and "liberals" with "Ukrainian fascists" and you have Russian TV right now. Donbass region, where the fighting is, is mostly destroyed now with half the people having fled to which place they had relatives at. No matter who wins, the region is destroyed economically.

They should have made another game instead.

Hearing the story of the developer of these games, they earned the right to do whatever the ***** they want. And anybody who doesn't support them is just an EA  and/or Activision fanboy.

I'll wait until post release and check whether they fixed the all aware but incredibly stupid AI and got rid of the heavily scripted handholding scenes, then I'll perhaps buy it in a sale.

Never finished 2033 because of that and despite owning Last Light, I never actually had time to try it yet.

I didn't expect them to give the games away, I just don't want to buy them again. They're good games but I'm saving my money for new games coming in the Autumn.

Not unreasonable. I've had my eye on these games since the original came out, but not gotten around to playing them. Looking forward to experiencing these games in the best manner possible.

Did not expect the Redux version free in the first place. I do however expect to pick up the Redux version in the future when the price is right and some time has passed between me finishing the originals.

I have both, but I haven't completed either and haven't even started Last Light. Maybe I'll gift the original Last Light away and buy Redux LL.

Kinda hard to go wrong for $12.49

I have both titles but I could care less about them not offering the redux version for free. I've already played and completed both titles. I don't see myself coming back to play them and fancier graphics is hardly reason enough to do it (kind of like most pointless DLC's that come out months after you've beaten a game).

blueboxdoctor

I got them both during a Steam sale for next to nothing so no big deal here for me, may grab the first one and see how the updates are to the gameplay to determine if I want to buy the 2nd one again.

I got Metro LL for free and 2033 in a humble bundle. I can't possibly feel cheated here.

Incidentally, I think the game is fairly representative of the current situation in Ukraine (where the developers are from). Fascists and Communists fighting and civilians in the midst of the war bearing the brunt.

come on, Sony almost released The Last of Us Remastered for full price.... and TLOUR is just a 1080p 60 frames edition with the DLCs....Sometimes gamers are so mean

Considering I got Metro 2033 in a Humble Bundle, and didn't buy Last Light yet, I will gladly buy these new versions if the graphics are upgraded on pc.

Got the Metro Last light on steam summer sale. Don't have Metro 2033, is it worth getting? Should I get this? I really liked Metro: LL, the part with the spiders was so creepy. I hate spiders.

Running 770s on SLI.

Honestly this looks like a really good deal. Especially for console users considering the lack of games. If I had a console, TLOU and this would be a must.

How can they improve on Last Light, those graphics are amazing.

@Thanatos2k So true, + the amount of work that CD projekt put into those EE was incredible they added storylines, items, quests, hell they even added a whole new little survival game where you had to fight waves of enemies and they gave it away for free because they respected the fact that people had allready paid 50-60 bucks (depending where you live) for the game so they didn't need to turn around and ask for more money again they realized that by actually supporting the game what they were doing was securing future sales for their next game.

ryanreynolds

@themc_7 What? Have you even played Metro 2033 or Last Light? Both games were praised for their gameplay (sure, there was some criticism too), graphics and storyline. The game is pretty, but it's not only pretty visuals that it has to offer. Unlike Crysis 2/3.

michalress

@AyatollaofRnR  You have to man. I only played M2033 a year ago when I got my 3D rig and it is one of the best, most climactic games I've ever played. If you can play it in 3D, it's that much better,

I am holding out for Last Light when I get a better vid card but looks like I'll be getting the Redux version unless I hear negative reports on 3D support.

@mr_nee It was made in Ukraine, which is pretty much in an undeclared war with Russia. Do some research before you start spewing such malarkey.

dani3po

@sladakrobot @dani3po I think it's pretty clear. The government elected after the coup is far-right with fascist roots. The pro-Russian, although they are not communists anymore, oppose this government.

mr_nee

@analogjunkie24 lol. I've always thought 4a games was a russian company. My bad. in that case - we should check if this company is not owned by ukrianian russians and based on outcome either buy multiple copies or fully ignore it.°

Russians suck!

canuckbiker
canuckbiker

That's inaccurate. The peoples elected government in Ukraine is serving the will of its majority, by staying in the democratic European Union. Putin is a tyrant that can't even win an election in his own country without rigging it, that is breaking long standing agreements with Ukraine, and trying to take it over with the old divide, and conquer strategy. He arms a militant extremist minority, and pretends to be a liberator. He does seem to want to bring back the iron curtain, but under a strict religious right rule this time. He himself only believes in power, but what could you expect from an ex-KGB.

sladakrobot

@mr_nee I am pretty sure that every Russian thinks the same about you after your comments.

dani3po
dani3po

@canuckbiker I agree totally with your description of Putin. But the other side (the so-called pro-European) are just as bad as Putin. It was a coup of the extreme right, supported by several European countries and the United States. I doubt that most of the Ukrainian people agree with either side. That´s why that situation reminds me of the Metro games .

canuckbiker
canuckbiker

I can understand that. It seemed to me many Ukrainians in the west had no desire to renew ties with Russia, while some in the east wanted to join them. It's a hard situation for a nation to deal with. The current president was legitimately elected into office, despite strong opposition in the east. It's a problem that may just literally divide the nation.

analogjunkie24

@mr_nee @analogjunkie24 What is happening in Ukraine between the pro-Western government and pro-Russian rebels is so much more complex then you are making it out to be.
