Metal Gear Solid V won't be "limited to one console", says Kojima

"Moving forward I wanted to have a Metal Gear Solid that you could play on whatever you wanted," says Metal Gear Solid creator.

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima has teased the idea of Metal Gear V: The Phantom Pain incorporating itself around multiple devices.

Speaking in an interview on IGN, Kojima said that he considered the idea of multiplatform development after Metal Gear Solid 4, and created Peace Walker around the idea of a game players could access whenever they wanted.

"When making [Metal Gear Solid V prologue chapter] Ground Zeroes," he said, "I wasn't thinking along the lines of 'what went wrong last time?' or 'what improvements do i need to make?' That's not really the way I work. I try to think 'what do I want to do?' Then I try to make that happen. With Metal Gear Solid 4 we were somewhat limited technology-wise. At that point, I wanted to work on multi-platform development, which is why I started work on the Fox engine. I wanted to make something in an open world. Snake infiltrating in the rain, all those things I wanted to make six years ago, I think those are becoming a reality here in Ground Zeroes."

"MGS 4 was a turning point: the engine, the multi-platform, and online elements. Moving forward I wanted to have a Metal Gear Solid that you could play on whatever you wanted. And that's how we created Peace Walker. Now we're presenting something again that's console-only, but that's not actually true of Metal Gear Solid V."

"Metal Gear Solid V will have many more elements that aren't limited to one console. You'll be able to play the game on whatever you want, whenever you want."

Kojima acknowledges that hardware restrictions will be a factor to these ambitions, however. "There are always hardware limitations though. Technology will always impose restrictions. Although so many things can be done with next-gen hardware, that means we have to make some hard choices. And that's the soul of the creative process--making choices and deciding what to do with your time. One thing that has helped us deal with many of those hard choices is the Fox engine."

Elsewhere in the interview, Kojima discusses the relationship between Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain, and talks about the challenges of making Metal Gear Solid V an open world game. "Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is a huge game with a vast open world. Ground Zeroes serves as the prologue episode. For Metal Gear fans, it may be a bit confusing to step into that huge open world of Phantom Pain, so Ground Zeroes is the first step in between, where players will experience a more compact and controlled prologue episode."

"Metal Gear, so far, has been a somewhat linear game. We expected players to go through the game in a certain way, and we placed enemies accordingly. When we turned MGS into an open world game [with Metal Gear Solid V], it turns out the player wound up in situations where they could be spotted from any direction 360 degrees around them. Sometimes, you wouldn't know where you were spotted from. We first wanted to give the player a notice--you were spotted here at this angle, and also to give them one chance to defeat the enemy within a certain time frame. Then it wouldn't be counted as the player being spotted."

"That's part of the gameplay modifications we're working on now. One thing I want to make clear is that this will not make the game much easier. With the stress and tension levels that players will experience going through the game, I can guarantee that it's not going to make the game easier for anyone."

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be released for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Kojima Productions has not set a release date.

This isn't the only time he has said this. Metal Gear Solid 4 is the only sony exclusive mgs game and only because of technical limitations.

Is he trolling? I just never know with this man, and I must admit, I'm starting to harbor a bit of disdain towards him.

Calling it now, I bet he's going to adapt the entire game (MGSV-GZ&PP) into an interactive comic for tablets, phones, vita, etc. It'll be in the style of the interactive cutscenes in Peace Walker.

Tell me what is the point in choosing one system over the other(especially now when the consoles are so close in everything) if the games Are all the same? See doesn't make much sense does it.

I love that Xbox fanboys(I own both consoles and play Xbox way more just not a hysterical fanboy) always complain when a game that they'd like to play is exclusive to playstation. But god forbid anyone ever mentioning a halo or gears of war on playstation. Such hypocrites. They'd like to have all Playstation's exclusives be multi-plat yet keep their own...right...

good this is how it always should have been. there was no excuse for matel gear 3 being on ps 2 only back in the day. now how about putting the 4th game on xbox one at some point making it so its posiable to have all mgs games without a playstation being invovled, i played the first game on pc then the gamecube remake then subtance on xbox original then when i got ps 2 to play yakuza i picked up mgs3. although dispite getting a ps 3 for the rest of the yakuza games i have not picked up 4 yet. but if we see it sometime when i get my xbox one perhaps i might get 4.  5 i will support just for you making sure it is multi plat

Play on whatever, whenever? Cool. I'm sure Atari 2600 owners have been long awaiting a new title. This is good news for Jaguar owners as well. Dreamcast...Game Boy....NES....CD-i....DS....PSP.... The list goes on.

It's like that trailer for The Simpsons Game.

I feel like Microsoft fans don't know what they haven't been missing all these years. Sure they got the MGS HD collection, but realistically, how many Xbox owners would go pick up a box set geared towards nostalgic Playstation fans, especially when they were never able to enjoy these games in their day.  Either MGS5 is going to have A LOT of background story incorporated, or an Xbone release will just confuse a lot of players. There's a lot of complexity built around the characters identities over the years.

Gamespot i admire that you guys wanted to improve the website but ,for me at least, the new website is way worse. The old website was incredibly easy to use and understand but more important it was convenient. All the articles were visible and all you needed to do was scroll down. Your big stories were at the top and easy to negotiate. Now if i want to see all the artcles i have to click on news. U guys only show what you find is the more important news when it may not be that way for other people. I really loved Gamespot but now its just getting on my nerves. Plus you cheated us and especially Bethesda when you let article of the winner of the Greatest Game Series of the Decade just dissapear without doing anything. You guys can honestly be such f**king douchebags sometimes. Coming from a loving fan

im so tired of exclusives! i wont buy a console because of a singe game! i wont base buying a console on what exclusives it has...the only factor in choosing a console is what control do you prefer and that's it

people either love the xbox controller and praise the machine as the second coming or they hate it and troll anyone who likes....

@jtthegame316 reel in Xboxers with 5, make them want to buy a PS3 so they can go back and play 4, then release it on Xbox to get any remaining stragglers.

@BieberBeliever tbh I'd bet everyone and their grandmother owned a PS2, so most people have had a chance to play 3 of them.  some would say the most important 3.

jtthegame316
jtthegame316

@BieberBeliever you don't need playstation to have played and understand metal gear. pc has the original. gamecube has a remake of the first game which is awesome. original xbox has mgs 2 substance. 360 has hd conllection of 2,3 and peacewalker. only game exclusive to playstation is is mgs 4 but there is no reason why that could not appear on another format such as xbox one later after all it is a konami game and not sony

jtthegame316
jtthegame316

@MajinSquall but is is on xbox one and i know you sony fan boys hate that even though it being on the xbox is not stopping you playing it. you will probably all put together a petitiion to boycotte konami soon just because the game is multi plat. yes playstation fans showed them self to be this sad early in this gen

Impaler722

@frescura You didn't finish reading or didn't finish watching the video. It isn't coming out on Wii U, just Xbox360, PS3, Xbone, and PS4. In one of Kojima's tweets he said someday he might bring the game to PC but he is focusing on getting it out on the consoles first. He never said anything about Wii U :-/ sorry. You just gotta play SSB I guess.

Kickable

@West123 i seriously doubt the controller is the main reason why people pick the consoles they do.  well when it comes to Xbox and Playstation at least.  damn you Wiimote

jtthegame316
jtthegame316

t have a ps3 as well as xbox but did not get 4 yet because it seems to be all cut scenes so having 5 will not make xbox people want. To buy a ps 3. It is just something they will pick up if konami put it there

MajinSquall
MajinSquall

@jtthegame316 @MajinSquall i never said i was a sony fanboy it's just i can't afford to get both systems at launch this time (and by the way i usually do get all of them) so i decided to get the cheapest one which is the PS4, i will get a XB1 when it becomes cheaper but chances are that when MGSV is released i will only have the PS4 to play it on that why i said i'll get it on PS4 if i happen to be able to get a XB1 before then then that may change but as it stands i'm getting it on PS4

but i do understand what your saying moaning at a company just because a game goes multiplatorm is stupid because it doesn't stop you from enjoying the game any less

@Navardo95  I was just hoping MGS came to PC since it wasn't a PS-only tittle anymore.

MajinSquall

@jtthegame316 i'm not really a killzone fan although i will play them (i prefer Halo more to be honest) but it's all about the price honestly i know i can save enough for a PS4 from my next pay but not a XB1, i know it's only £80 but i need that money for other things

jtthegame316
jtthegame316

Well sorry for mistaking you for a fanboy at least you understand they are stupid. Your getting a ps 4 first. Are you a killlzone fan then? Personally i want crimson dragon and dead rising 3 so it will be xbox one for me. Don't know if ps 4 will convince later. I mean this gen i was 360 first then later i got ps 3 for yakuza
