Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain announced

Metal Gear Solid V is both The Phantom Pain and Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes combined.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain has been announced at GDC.

Speaking on stage during Kojima Productions' presentation on its new Fox engine, director Hideo Kojima says Metal Gear Solid V is both Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain combined. Snake has been in a coma for nine years, and awakens in hospital at the start of the game alongside Ishmael, the figure from The Phantom Pain whose face is in covered in bandages.

During the gameplay demo, which is set in the Metal Gear Solid V's tutorial level, Snake can't walk or move properly due to his comatose state. When he regains his mobility Metal Gear Solid V will become an open-world game, says Kojima.

Showing the first trailer for Metal Gear Solid V, footage from previous Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain trailers were spliced together alongside a handful of new scenes. Longtime series character Kazuhira Miller is also seen in the trailer.

It is currently unclear if David Hayter is reprising his role as Snake.

Kojima Productions first teased The Phantom Pain at the Spike VGA awards, saying the game was in development at Moby Dick Studios. Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes was announced in August 2012 during the Metal Gear Solid 25th Anniversary event in Tokyo.

The game was shown running on PC using Kojima's new FOX Engine, but the trailer showed logos for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Kind of surprised that they aren't waiting for the next gen to show off their new engine as it's best (or as close as they can get) but I'm still excited.

No way. This was suppose to be next gen on the PS4. how can we see it in PS3/Xbox360?

I think they mixed things up... Kojima clearly stated MGSV will be released on the next gen consoles....didn't he?

I find it disappointing, I thought I MGS5 will be the debue for the new PS4..

I knew it. I knew. I friggin knew it... PP is MGS, wait, but why would you confuse as all. Anyway, now am psyched to get the game. Super psyched.

On the note of not having David Hayter... Did anyone play the MGS3 Japanese Demo? Thats who I want.

Cow kept saying MGSV would be exclusive to the PS3. Guess they were wrong once again.

I'll still probably get the PS3 version anyways since it's usually optimized better on that system.

Fact is MGS has always been shit.... Splinter Cell Blacklist is everything gaming is about...

@legoislandfan  Doing so would limit their profit margins, for one it means waiting for the consoles release (PS3 US and Europe Expected early 2014) other reasons such as the limited amount of people that will immediately buy a "next gen" console and even fewer with interest in MGS / Stealth games. Finally the "next gen" consoles only offer an increase in processing power and ram, visually they look no different, and most (if not all) currently announced games for PS4 could run on existing consoles, while the boost allows for more objects on screen and faster loading, for an optimized engine the performance increase would be marginal, the tech jump is not even close to the previous leaps from one gen to the next.

This was posted based on announced technical specs compared to existing and based on shown "next gen" footage of witch very few features from “next gen” titles are unable to be included in current and those that won’t run on existing systems, the same effect can be achieved with less resource demanding means.

@GunEye I guarantee they'll be making it for next-gen consoles as well.

@GunEye why dont you consider the possibility of MGSV being for both current and next-gen consoles?

@GunEye Don't get your panties in a bunch. The PS3/360 still have a lot of life in them. This is a great decision by Kojima

@gamergath because Kojima likes to keep us all guessing a lil bit - and not too long ago, he said that he thinks trailers should be misleading and not give everything away. He is 100% correct in this btw. trailers that give everything away are like comedy movie trailers that tell/show ALL the best jokes/funny-moments in the trailer which leads to a completely underwhelming experience. thus they are complete fail.

@Gui_Mania Since it's not Solid Snake, I'm not sure why David Hayter should be coming back.

@blackace nahhh MGS wasn't really an exclusive of ps anyway.. but now that they have the engine to make multi-platform games i don't see why we couldn't share the experience with other console gamers.. plus the new engine sounds promising.. and it looks like they won't lower the quality of the game for xbox. though i feel bad for letting the franchise go out of playstation :/

Go  home idiot. I'm a huge SC fan, but what they've done to the series of late is garbage that doesn't remotely compare to MGS

@Bobolee anyone who says Metal Gear Solid is shit, is too dumb to understand it or they never played it. Go play Gears, Halo, and Cod. Splinter Cell is mediocre compared to Metal Gear Solid.

Duncanidaho0107
Duncanidaho0107

@Bobolee Sam Fisher can only be compared to Snake in his dreams. MGS is one of the best games in history, Splinter Cell is good but is not even in the list. Even more: Splinter Cell exists thanks to MGS.

Duncanidaho0107
Duncanidaho0107

@husaberg2 Before. It begins 10 days after Peace Walker so is after MGS 3. The main character is Big Boss.

@Utra @legoislandfan

This is precisely why I wasn't too excited to hear that PS4 was coming out.  my immediate thought was "It's not like they even use the current specs to capacity... what's the point really?"

mctelinde

@Utra "Finally the "next gen" consoles only offer an increase in processing power and ram, visually they look no different"

I think it's safe to say the bump in processing power and other specs will have an effect on the visual fidelity of the games, to a noticeable extent. Like you said, maybe not quite the jump the last gen took, but I think you'd be wrong by saying the games will look no different.

gamergath

@moe050: I agree you with one thing, misleading trailers, yes, but one shouldn't be even over carried on even changing long time voice actors. David Hayter. Kojima is overdoing it. My opinion.

Dredcrumb9

@heretrix @Gui_Mania David Hayter voiced Naked Snake(the guy solid snake was cloned from)so it makes sense to have Hayter voice Naked Snake. The snake in this trailer is a young Solidus. Solidus used to also look like Big Boss.

@Dredcrumb9 @Boboleei love MGS. MGS 4 was the best single player experience i had. Actually i am in the final chapters of MG rising on PC. I dunno why people do not like that game. It is very linear but the gameplay was developed the right way.

and whoa, do not put halo in there. ♥ Halo ♥.

Yes, a majority of the community for these games are....well the best way to put it is they are really "non gamers", They play "below" the "average" time, and have very little concentration as compared to someone who learnt all the callouts, or conditioned his/her awareness etc.

If you know halo well, you would know that halo 3 had argumentatively the best ranking system in FPS history + superb multiplayer level design. But it was too hard for a "nongamer" to rank up or get used to the map designs since halo was so unique (even though the maps are symmetrical lol) and they get dismotivated and even ignore social playlists, and the wonderful customs games composed by the amazing community of the halo. So in response Bungie dropped the ranking system and replaced it with the COD type ranking system. The community has gotten much weaker since then, and the average gamer IQ for halo dropped significantly. Halo was almost entirely dropped from MLG.

@Duncanidaho0107 .. MGS is a "movie" ... Splinter Cell is an "Actual" game.. The only true espionage game... MGS 4 is one of the worst games i have eva played to be honest.. And you fanboys call it espionage?? LoL.. Only true gamers can understand this..

@taker254isback @Utra @legoislandfan Do you mean the Expansion Pak memory boost, kinda dont get me wrong the processor has been compleatly re-designed ect but its not exactly a big technological leap.

@gamergath @moe050sorry, i just now saw you replied. I had trouble following this part of your comment:
" but one shouldn't be even over carried on" ...but  i think i understand what you were saying, and i agree that the long time voice actor change is a lil too much. nevertheless,i'm going to trust that Kojima will get it right since he usually does in my opinion.

@HMFCJD@Dredcrumb9 David Hayter  indeed voiced Solid and Naked Snake (later also known as Big Boss).

You did know Naked Snake IS the young Big Boss right? They are one and the same.

This game, just like MGS3, also takes place before he got that name.. The guy in the trailer is not Solidus, it is Naked Snake.

Brutal_Gamer97

@raincloud73 @heretrix @Gui_Mania that's because big boss is young.. look, richard doyle voiced big boss and it was completely ok. big boss is aging.. and david hayter even though best known as the voice of snakes.. still need to pass the torch

Dredcrumb9

@Bobolee Splinter Cell is boring. You obviously never played Metal Gear Solid 1, 2 and 3. Metal Gear Solid 4 is not a good starter. Metal Gear is so much more than stealth,. it has drama,  horror, action and sci-fi elements, and more meaningful story than Splinter Cell.
